“It is my pleasure to be here at the Republic Day Camp of the National Cadet Corps.

At the outset, I extend my best wishes for a prosperous and bright New Year to all of you. I am happy to see the bright and young faces of our youth, smartly turned out and beaming with confidence.

The National Cadet Corps is the largest uniformed youth organisation in the world, bringing together youth hailing from different parts of our country; including the remote and tribal areas, and moulding them into responsible, disciplined and united citizens of our great nation.

This organization fosters the spirit of brotherhood, builds character, inculcates the values of selfless service, concern for fellow citizens, community service and the spirit of adventure. The very ambience of this camp fosters the feeling of camaraderie and patriotism. This Camp will be a memorable motivating and learning experience for each one of you. It will give you an opportunity to interact with cadets not only from other parts of the country, but also from friendly foreign countries who will be arriving during the course of this camp. This will be a unique opportunity not only to understand your country better, but also to widen your horizon and foster lasting friendship with fellow cadets from other nations. This camp will highlight the essence of universal brotherhood transcending through national and international boundaries.

New challenges crop up every day, which we have to tackle as a mature democracy of the world. Your contribution in times of crisis and natural disasters like earthquakes, cyclones and floods has been commendable.

Your efforts in contributing to the society in educating and creating awareness among the masses about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, AIDS, adult education, dowry and corruption have been appreciated by one and all. Your efforts will positively improve the social fabric. I have full faith that your efforts will bear fruits in the near future.

The National Cadet Corps is a shining example of National Integration and you are the pillars of our Nation. It was heartening to learn that the NCC cadets have been participating in large numbers on all important occasions. I am told that almost a Lakh cadets across the country participated in the International Day of Yoga this year. I am glad to know that NCC Girl Cadets have scaled Mt Ladakhi in July 2017 and Boys have scaled Mt Jogin in September 2017. NCC has been contributing immensely towards Swachhta Abhiyan with almost 10 Lakh cadets participating in various related events.

It is a matter of deep satisfaction that you have excelled in all walks of life. Under-17 Girls football team of NCC has won the Runners Up trophy in Subroto Cup held at Delhi in September 2017. The encouraging performance of NCC cadets in the field of sports, especially Shooting, is a sure sign of the bright future of our sports in the years ahead. I am sure NCC will continue to groom sports persons who will do our country proud.

Today, I urge you all to continue with this hard work and discharge your duties with dedication and distinction in the times to come.

I am deeply impressed by your turnout and smart drill and I congratulate you all for the same.

I have great pleasure in inaugurating the Annual National Cadet Corps Republic Day Camp 2018."

http://indianexpress.com/article/in...by-airspace-closure-for-republic-day-5014255/

By: PTI | New Delhi | Published: January 6, 2018 8:01 pm

Nearly 1,000 flights to and from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) will be cancelled or rescheduled in the run-up to Republic Day parade as airspace over Delhi will remain closed for about two hours every day for over a week. An estimated 500 domestic flights could be cancelled and as many international flights will be rescheduled due to the restrictions, an airport official said, adding it was being done due to increased traffic and capacity constraints this year.

The airspace over Delhi remains shut for commercial flights due to rehearsals in the days leading to the Republic Day on January 26.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has issued a NOTAM or Notice to Airmen informing the airlines that no take-offs or landings would be allowed from or to Delhi airport from 10.35 am to 12.15 pm for nine days between January 18-26, according to airport sources.

IGI witnesses 67 air traffic movement (both take offs and landings) per hour between 8 am to 11 pm everyday. With airspace shut for 100 minutes for nine days, an estimated 1,000 flights will either be cancelled or rescheduled.

“On an average 100 flights will be affected every day. We will accommodate 40 international flights before or after the closure hours.

“Out of the remaining 60, we will try to reschedule some of the flights. So, we could see roughly 50 flights being cancelled each day,” said an airport official.

The Delhi International Airport Limited, which operates IGI, says no international flights will be cancelled.

“Keeping in consideration the capacity constraints and to minimise inconvenience to the passengers, Airports Authority of India-Air Navigation Services, several major airlines and DIAL have consulted on various options and jointly agreed that the best and safest course of action is to cancel domestic flights scheduled during the NOTAM period.

“International carriers have been requested to re-schedule and not cancel their flights,” said a DIAL spokesperson.

Airport officials say that while on earlier occasions they were able to reschedule most of the affected flights, severe capacity constraints at IGI mean that it can’t be done anymore.

“Since we had spare capacity we were able to accommodate flights either before or after the closure hours. But because we don’t have any spare capacity now, these flights have to be cancelled,” said a source.

Also, the airspace closure has been extended by two days, as a result the restrictions are in place for nine days instead of seven days.

The airlines were asked to curtail operations for R-day on December 29, when the NOTAM was issued.

Sources in the MHA said a letter has been sent to the Director of General Police (DGPs) and the Police Commissioners of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

Asking them to keep a vigil on all airborne craft, a senior MHA official, in the letter, said the states had been asked to “keep surveillance and positioning of special security guards at recognised field to check that no light/micro light aircraft, hand glider and helicopters is allowed to fly or even starts on and around the Republic Day.”

“Operations of light, micro-light aircraft, UAVs and similar long-range vehicles should be prohibited around 300 km from Delhi between 6 am and 9 pm on January 26,” the letter stated. However, all state-owned aircraft, having prior security clearance, will be allowed to fly.

It has also been advised to prohibit airborne cameras and drones along sensitive locations such as Vijay Chowk, Rashtrapati Bhawan and Rajpath during the restriction period between January 26 and 29, sources said. The police have been asked to intensify highway patrolling as the aerial vehicles and light aircraft may not necessarily be operated from the airports, but from any other unprepared ground as well.

The state security agencies have also been instructed to keep a tight vigil on unused airstrips and open grounds which may allow operations of these aircraft.

In fact all unused airports - there are dozens of them within 500km of Delhi - must be checked for suspicious aircraft parked there, like the one in Jaisalmer which is abandoned....

Below, an example of another unguarded disused airstrip in Surichua near Panagarh. There are many such in the West too. These could be used for small aircraft loaded with explosives for a suicide mission. The US has provided adequate security at such airfields across the US. We have not as yet and as usual will only react after an incident takes place.

The unused and unguarded Chakulia airstrip near Jamshedpur.

As per IATA, smart bags/smart luggage include devices with integrated lithium batteries, motors, power banks, GPS, GSM, Bluetooth, RFID or Wi-Fi technology.
india Updated: Jan 11, 2018 22:37 IST

http://www.hindustantimes.com/india...from-jan-15/story-qRGsn9LIQMttyBU1XAVVzJ.html

Following a direction from the global airline grouping IATA, Jet Airways on Thursday said it will prohibit passengers from carrying smart luggage, which include devices with non-removable batteries, on its aircraft from January 15.

As per IATA, smart bags/smart luggage include devices with integrated lithium batteries, motors, power banks, GPS, GSM, Bluetooth, RFID or Wi-Fi technology. Bags with a lithium battery will only be accepted if it is possible to remove the battery.

This does not mean that a passenger will not be able to carry the mobile phone on a flight.

The move effective from January 15 comes after the International Air Transport Association (IATA) banned any such baggage on a passenger aircraft across the world.

The IATA had late last month announced that its Dangerous Goods Board restricted carrying smart luggage on passenger flights operated by its 275 member-airlines from January 15.

“In accordance with the regulations issued by the IATA towards ensuring flight safety, smart bags or smart luggage which include devices with non-removable batteries, will not be permitted on all our flights, effective January 15,” Jet Airways said in an advisory today.

“Guests checking in smart luggage must uninstall the batteries prior to check-in. Post-removal, batteries can be carried separately in cabin baggage only,” the airline said.

The airline further advised passengers to remove batteries from their smart luggage and to declare them to the check-in staff.

“The liability of the airline and its staff is limited to the extent of only advising and guiding guests to ensure compliance with these procedures,” Jet said.

The airline will not be liable for any damage/malfunction of the smart luggage in any form due to un-installation or re-installation, the advisory added.

Prime Minister of Vietnam calls on the President

His Excellency Mr Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the Prime Minister of Vietnam, called on the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today (January 24, 2018).

Welcoming the Vietnamese Prime Minister to India, the President said that India is delighted to host him as a guest of honour at the Republic Day celebrations. India is also celebrating 25 years of its partnership with ASEAN. This makes his presence even more special.

The President said that Vietnam is a preferred partner for India in ASEAN. Our economic engagement has witnessed a remarkable growth. We need to redouble our efforts to reach the target of US $ 15 billion in bilateral trade by 2020. He stated that India remains committed to encouraging its industry to explore investment opportunities in Vietnam in pharma, solar, education and other sectors. We also need to enhance cooperation in the oil and gas sector, including through trilateral cooperation with friendly countries.

The President said that India-Vietnam relations are on an upward curve. Last year, we have celebrated ‘Year of Friendship’ to mark our warm and close ties. He thanked the Vietnamese Prime Minister for Vietnam’s support for India at various multilateral fora and expressed hope that this visit will give further boost to India-Vietnam relations.
