BELARUS TO CARRY OUT RESEARCH FOR INDIAN DEFENCE MINISTRY

NAM NEWS NETWORK Apr 9th, 2010

MINSK, April 9 (NNN-BELTA) — The state science and manufacturing power metallurgy association of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is set to conduct 2.0 million USD worth of research work for the Defence Ministry of India, according to the Director General of the association, Alexander Ilyushchenko.

He told a press conference here Thursday that the two sides had signed five contracts for two and a half years each. Their financing started last year. Belarusian scientists pursue a survey in the development of new powder metallurgy materials.

One of the research areas is the efforts to improve cast alloy properties. “Today, metallurgists have reached that level when it comes quite difficult already to continue improving the properties of casting alloys. The ceiling amount of added alloy elements is limited by 46-50. It is almost impossible to manage them if the limit is exceeded,” Ilyushchenko said.

Belarusian experts improve the properties of cast alloys by means of adding various types of powder. A different crystallization mechanism increases their durability and corrosion resistance by 15 to 20 per cent.

In the future such alloys can lighten constructions, including the design of an aircraft, reduce energy consumption.
According to Alexander Ilyushchenko, Belarus and India have also developed a constant exchange in the scientific staff. — NNN-BELTA
