As much as that would be our dream to see, we need to be realistic. We also need to understand that China is leagues ahead in 5G technology and for all we know, they would have already asked HUAWEI to implement them in Tibet so that it falls within China's Great Firewall. India's business houses need to consider R&D as a serious part of long-term expansion; the mindset of Indian CEOs in our country is very, very short term. Someone owning a heavy machinery factory won't mind jumping into sugar refining if he sees quick returns - only to sell it off to someone 5 years down. This lack of tech and long-term strategic orientation is what is hurting us in building capabilities.

Without domestic R&D in the private sector, progress is impossible.

There are tax breaks for R&D but the greedy and short-sighted Kirana store attitude of Indian business houses makes it difficult to crack into the hi-tech sector. Indian corporate houses and by extension IAS babus need to change their attitude.

China didn't become an expert overnight - they have a strategic way of thinking and if anyone disagrees with them on their home turf, they are smart to eliminate them without wasting resources on them and their 'opinions'. They might be our adversaries but there are a few things that we could learn from them - for our own selfish good.
