Islamic State has claimed responsibility for hacking to death a university professor in Bangladesh for “calling to atheism”. The claim was reported by the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadi websites. No further details were available.

Professor Rezaul Karim Siddique, 58, was attacked from behind with machetes as he walked from his home to a bus station in the north-western city of Rajshahi, where he taught English at the public university, police said.

“His neck was hacked at least three times and was 70%-80% severed,” said the Rajshahi police commissioner, Mohammad Shamsuddin. “By examining the nature of the attack, we suspect that it was carried out by extremist groups.”

Nahidul Islam, a deputy commissioner of police, said Siddique was involved in cultural programmes and set up a music school at Bagmara, a former bastion of an outlawed Islamist group, Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). “The attack is similar to the ones carried out on [atheist] bloggers in the recent past,” he said.

Sajidul Karim Siddique, a brother of the victim, said the academic was a “very quiet and simple man” who focused on studying and teaching. “So far as we know, he did not have any known enemies and we never found him worried,” he said. “We don’t know why it happened to him.”

Sakhawat Hossain, a friend and fellow English professor from the university, said Siddique played the tanpura, a musical instrument popular in South Asia, and wrote poems and short stories. “He used to lead a cultural group called Komol Gandhar and edit a biannual literary magazine with the same name. But he never wrote or spoke against religion in public,” he said.

Police said Siddique was the fourth professor from Rajshahi university to be murdered. In February, a court handed down life sentences to two Islamist militants for the murder of Prof Mohammad Yunus.

The killing on Saturday triggered a protest by the university’s teachers and students, who blocked a major road and demanded the immediate arrest of the killers.

Bangladeshi Islamist militants have been blamed for a number of murders of secular bloggers and online activists since 2013, most recently in the capital, Dhaka, early this month. Police said that in each of the attacks, unidentified assailants hacked the victim to death with machetes or cleavers. The killings have sparked outrage at home and abroad, with international rights groups demanding that the secular government protect freedom of speech in the Muslim-majority but secular country.

Eight members of the banned Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), including a senior cleric who is said to have founded the Islamist group, were convicted late last year for the murder of atheist blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider in February 2013.

Ansar al-Islam, a Bangladesh branch of al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent, this month claimed responsibility for the murder of 26-year-old Nazimuddin Samad, a law student who was killed on the streets of Dhaka, according to the US monitoring group SITE. Police, however, blamed the ABT for the murder.

Authorities have consistently denied that international Islamist networks, such as al-Qaida or Islamic State, which recently claimed responsibility for the murders of minorities and foreigners, are active in the country.

In the last year itself, the attacks on journalists, professors, bloggers, thinkers & such literate pillars of society have increased tremendously. A list that quantifies these attacks that appeared in today's Times of India paper -

15 Feb, 2013 | Assailants wielding machetes kill secular blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider for his posts on religious fundamentalism.

27 Feb, 2015 | Bangladeshi-American blogger and writer Avijit Roy killed with meat cleavers. Homegrown militant group Ansar Bangla 7 claims responsibility.

30 Mar, 2015 | Blogger Washiqur Rahman Babu, aged 26, hacked to death with meat cleavers. Suspects are students at Islamic schools.

12 May, 2015 | Online atheism activist and science magazine editor Ananta Bijoy Das killed with meat cleavers in Sylhet. Al-Qaida claims responsibility.

8 Aug, 2015 | Blogger Niloy Chottopadhay killed with cleavers in his Dhaka apartment. Militant group Ansarullah Bangla Team claims responsibility.

28 Sep, 2015 | Italian citizen Cesare Tavella gunned down in Dhaka's diplomatic quarter. ISIS claims responsibility.

4 Oct, 2015 | Assailants on a motorcycle kill Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi. ISIS claims responsibility.

31 Oct, 2015 | Publisher of secular books Faisal Arefin Deepan is hacked to death. Banned group Ansar al-Islam claims responsibility.

21 Feb, 2016 | Two men armed with guns and cleavers hack a Hindu priest to death at a temple in northern Bangladesh, an attack later claimed by ISIS.

6 Apr, 2016 | Student activist for secularism Nazimuddin Samad is shot dead.

23 Apr, 2016 | Again, two assailants on a motorcycle slit the throat and hack to death a professor at the Rajshahi University Rezaul Karim Siddiquee, aged 58, for "calling for atheism". ISIS claimed responsibility.

...and dozens more killings that must have missed the international media's eye. Bangladesh is going into deep shit - the present govt., while doing all that they can to prevent such developments, is not able to do enough. The problem is that if any other party comes to power, Bangladesh will officially become part of the Islamic State.

If the Awami League is ousted from power, at that moment India should immediately invade Bangladesh, eliminate the rogue Islamic elements and ISIS-sympathizing outfits over a 3-year period and then prop up a secular government.

Whenever it clearly says ISIS has claimed, it's just CIA doing the talking. Every time a real attack happens, multiple terror groups usually try to take advantage of the chaos and claim responsibility. It's only when someone WANTS everyone to think it was ISIS that such exclusivity is meted out. If it's being reported in all major media outlets means someone is trying to promote the news to build a narrative. In all the previous, so called 'ISIS attacks' I've seen, the CIA allows the news to dissipate across time zones and then someone from their state department comes out and issues an official statement to bolster the claim. Last time they issued a travel advisory, before that they issued a 'we're concerned about what's going on' speech.

One can tell they are pretty desperate to make sure the news (sentiment) has maximum visibility that BD is going down. They tried to kill a whole assortment of people hoping to create local ourtage among the home communities of the victim. First they killed an Italian pastor, then a Japanese man, then a Buddhist priest, then an Australian, then Australia issued a travel ban, then they killed a Hindu priest. So yeah, these are not random acts of senseless violence, these are planned with great forethought. Once the CIA gets to create an impression that ISIS is wreaking havoc in BD, then they can conveniently start an Arab Spring type color revolution and no one is the wiser. Already Zia has visited UK way too many times. A coup is in the pipeline.

Very sorry state of affairs indeed. All the more reason for India to modernize its forces.

No, I'm saying that BD has always been a violent place, and only now is it being highlighted when it is convenient for some vested interests to highlight it. There's a history to this pattern. When Modi first met Hasina at the UN meeting, he handed over a dossier to her which contained data pointing that a western government was trying to destabilize her government. The reason India chose to publicly declare that we had uncovered a plot to destabilize BD was because we wanted the west to know that we are watching. The report specifically mentions "a large western country is trying to destabilize Bangladesh". When this revelation happened, the assassinations went silent for a few months, now they have started again.

compared to the departed souls in b'desh & those of their ilk, their counterparts in India are enjoying a life in jannat, even after literally copiously abusing everything indigenous to this land & openly siding with those firangs who do so 'professionally'. even then, India has become so asahhishnuuu & all! :creepy:

Meat cleaver is the Bangladeshi terrorists' weapon of choice. Probably stolen from their mother's kitchen or the local butchery.

Good, good. This meat cutting must be big business and favourite pastime of BD.

ISLAM is a FAILED RELIGION.

Just like a "Failed State", the rot is down to the very core. It eats itself up from inside just like a parasite that slowly destroys its host.

The proof of this statement lies in the current state of every Muslim majority country in the world.
Every one of them is racked by lawlessness, obscurant backward culture and policies, exploitation, endemic corruption and the utter telling lack of success in any field, and most importantly - the complete lack of human intellectual development and growth.

It is a complete and utter failure as a major religion.

In the next 50 years or so - I predict there will be a new generation of young Muslims from every corner of the Muslim world who will reject this religion en masse, and consign this major faith to the ash heap of history.

The reason this will happen is simple - they will no longer be able to deny the overwhelming evidence of the carnage left in the Muslim world as a result of their faith. They will realize that religion is supposed to take you to a better place; not leave you in an endless cesspool of intolerance, exploitation, failure, misery, and death.

This is already happening quietly in many Muslim countries. Smart young Muslims are looking at all the turmoil in their societies, and quietly coming to the realization that a lot of their problems emanate from their backward, intolerant, fascist Islamist beliefs. These young Muslims will no longer buy that same old stale excuses for what is wrong with the Muslim world - namely that Jews and the West are responsible for all their problems and failures.

Nothing that happens in the Muslim world surprises me anymore. Whether its a professor getting hacked in Bangladesh, or a captured Jordanian pilot being burnt alive in a cage on videotape, or a 16 year old being sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for writing something against the state, or a raped Muslim woman being sentenced to hundreds of lashes for being raped.

The curtain is closing on this major faith, and we are all witnessing the last major flameout before Islam itself is extinguished.

I think Sheikh Hasina also actually acquiesces to Islamic Yahoos for appeasing BDee's in general. Remember BD has Islam as its foundation. BD's giving in to Dark Side, was delayed but quite natural for an Islamic Nation. There are hardly any countries in the world which has Islam at its foundation and has not behave savagely in their history. Their military is already in cohoots with Pakistan. Their massive efforts in making demographic change in WB and Assam is nothing but a deliberate policy, which unfortunately Indian Politicos and Bhadralok refuse to see

The fact that BD is Islamic is an STD inherited by being raped by history. It predates Hasina by centuries, there's a limit to how reformist she could be in a muslim majority nation even if she wants to. She can't go against the grain, beyond a point, even if she hates political Islam, just like Sonia couldn't finish off all Hindus despite her unbridled hate for Hindus. This woman Hasina has to at least keep up the pretense of working on behalf of the people. She has delivered several top level wanted terrorists whenever India has made a request and more. It is Manmohan who messed things up by failing to prop her up when her government was under siege.

Btw, my prediction was true after all. The west is engineering these events with help from local Islamist parties.

The fact that they had to execute a gay rights activist clearly shows that the target audience of the atrocity news is a western one, as there is no sensitivity in Asian societies about gay rights anyway. It is the western audience that would get provoked by such a 'transgression' (a self-inflicted one, in this case). The west has been trying to pockets of outrage all over the world to create a build up which was to be sealed by a final act of spectacular violence as a climax. The goal is to weave these individual stories together into a common thread of consensus among everyone that something wrong is going on in Bangladesh. First they killed an Italian, then planted stories in Italian press and waited for an uproar. Then they killed a pastor, then a Japanese man, then a Hindu priest, all the while keeping the respective local media of the target demographic engaged. Now they have killed a gay rights activist and planted sob stories all over the media for maximum reach. They are fishing for sympathy waves which would then by manipulated into outrage. Outrage which the US could then use as a casus belli to create the pretext for an American intervention. Just look at the headlines and the credentials of those promoting them.

Unrest in Bangladesh - Baltimore sun (Really? Unrest in a nation of 170 million, because a gay man got stabbed?)

John Kerry says, Xulhaz embodied the spirit of Bangladesh - Really? (I didn't know the spirit of Bangladesh was gay)

Reiterated by John Kirby, then became a promoted story boosted by Aljazeera (Really? I didn't know Aljazeera was big on gay rights issues)

And then there's the usual suspects, the paid coolies in India : The Hindu, TOI, DNA.

With that, I rest my case milord.

cc @Sakal Gharelu Ustad, @spikey360, @Bornubus, Having a destabilized nation in our armpit is not in our interest. If there is turmoil in BD, we will have to reallocate intel and military assets on our east which will take the pressure off the Pakistan border. Seems like someone is trying to give a Pakistani assets might have helped carry out these assassinations but they aren't alone, given the suspiciously synchronized media coverage by prominent western propaganda channels.
