Bangladesh intends to buy two diesel-electric submarines from Russia, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu said in an interview with TASS news agency.

"At present, assuring security to out naval borders is a priority," emphasized the Minister. "We examine the possibility of buying two diesel-electric submarines ready for sale. Russia could be the supplier of such submarines," he added.

Hasanul Haq Inu expressed hope that future-Bangladeshi-Russian military and technical cooperation would not be limited to the purchase of weapons but would also be accompanied with handing over of technology and training personnel.

China is the traditional weapons supplier to Bangladesh. Its share in the defence import in the country is estimated at about 50%. By turning to Russia, Bangladesh tries to reduce its dependence in weapons import on China.

Significantly, China itself is interested in buying the Amur-1650 non-nuclear submarines. In August, India announced its desire to purchase two Amur-1650 submarines.

According to military experts, the Russian Amur class submarines are clearly superior to similar foreign vessels. They can carry out salvo missile attacks on waterborne and ground targets using torpedo tubes. It is very difficult to detect these submarines owing to their low noise level. The Amur submarines are equipped with advanced sonar complex which help to discover targets at a longer distance than the capability of similar foreign vessels.

Russia presented its latest achievements at the Euronaval-2014, International Naval Defence and Maritime Exhibition opened in France on Monday. The automatically controlled Piranya-T midget submarine sparked real furor. The mini-submarine is designed for carrying out special operations in shallow, near shore waters and in regions where navigation is quite difficult. It is almost impossible to use ordinary submarines in these waters also due to anti-submarine defence.

Many European weapons producers are interested in closer cooperation with Russia, also on the naval warfare theme. In the present situation, political agenda has undoubtedly complicated such cooperation. Nevertheless, we will remain open to our partners and are aimed at holding a mutually beneficial dialogue, said Sergei Ladygin, the Deputy Director General of the Rosobronexport.

Russia assumes a leading position in the development of naval warfare. This is confirmed by the fact that France has recently presented its concepts of future submarines. However, according to experts, these concepts remind Soviet submarines which were developed some 30 years ago.

Russia is also leading in the development of naval artillery systems. For one, ship-based 100-mm gun system A-190 is considered as the world's best. Experts have shown keen interest in 57 mm automatic rapid-fire naval gun A-220. Russia's advanced small missile-artillery ships of the project 21631 and project 20382 Tiger Corvettes are equipped with these guns. It has been planned to equip the ships of Soviet projects, which are now in the navies of Asian countries, especially India with these artillery systems.

Russia submarines are tested submarines and are operating in many countries.

Chinese submarines are not so well acknowledged since these are with China alone.

One wonder if this is what made BD opt for Russian subs and not the Chinese ones and not because it wants a bouquet of countries in their defence supplies.

China has been the major supplier to the BD military.

This news about them buying 2 subs has been around for a while but question is why does Bangladesh need a sub? What threatens it? Certainly if it thinks India is a threat it can't do shit with 2 subs which india can sink in no time. It won't be able to leave port itself.

I presume it must be based on contingencies after Threat Analysis.

To be fair, when doing a Threat Analysis, one cannot overlook worst case scenarios.

There is no doubt that if Indian Navy mounts an embargo, it can do nothing, but in such circumstances a sub is more useful than a capital ship.

I think they will base it at Chittagong where there is greater leeway to access to the sea.

My opinion is that they are free to buy the subs. We need not worry too much about that. We better worry about our own capabilities. Huge investments made by several companies in building shipyards has not borne results due to delays introduced by previous Congress government. We need to bring our own shipbuilding in high gear. If India can build for itself, it can build for neighbors too.

It does not help to consider Bangladesh a threat. This country could be a friend if right buttons are pressed.

That's what I tried to figure out. What's the threat analysis. India & Burna our its neighbors.

It can base the subs in Chittagong but can't get anywhere as we have base in Vizag, Andamans. I mean its a lot of money they will be spending for a threat that's non existent looking even 15-20 years from now. In fact India & BD will be more economically connected than every before.

It's a diesel electric submarine. In about 10 years from now, India should be selling diesel electric subs, or non-nuclear subs in general.
