BAE Wins 1.2 Billion-Pound Submarine Order From U.K. Government

BAE Systems Plc (BA/), Europe's largest defense company, won a 1.2 billion-pound ($1.9 billion) contract from the U.K. government to build a submarine for the Royal Navy.

BAE will construct the Astute Class submarine in Barrow-in- Furness, northern England, "safeguarding" 3,000 jobs, the Ministry of Defence said today in a statement.

The ministry also said a further 1.5 billion pounds had been committed to building other submarines.

"BAE Systems announced last week that the berth cranes, used to load cargo onto ships, would be removed from the Govan shipyard in Scotland, it was clear that the omens were not good for the centuries-old shipbuilding industry in Scotland. One Govanite lamented in the local media: "That spells the end of it, doesn't it?"

Indeed it could be the end, as BAE Systems confirmed it was consulting with unions on 1,775 job cuts across three UK shipyards, including Portsmouth, Scotstoun and Govan."

The cuts at Scottish shipyards will only prompt them to declare independence as saving shipyard jobs was the biggest platform against it. The real question for BAE submarine business is if the Trident replacement will be ordered. Based on funding levels the QE overages has sucked the life out of any future RN plans. It is not just the cost of the carriers which is exorbitant but also the air wing to go on it. Not to mention all of their frigates still require replacement. If Scotland goes, their submarine arm has no base and a very weak revenue stream.
