Sania out of doubles, Mahesh in mixed doubles 2nd Rd

STAFF WRITER 11:0 HRS IST

New York, Sep 5 (PTI) Sania Mirza crashed out of the women's doubles event after losing a thriller but Mahesh Bhupathi ensured the smooth sailing of Indians in mixed doubles advancing to the second round of the US Open at the Flushing Meadows here.

Fourteenth seeds Sania and Francesca Schiavone of Italy made a smart recovery from a set down but failed to deliver at crucial points in the decider to lose 2-6, 6-1, 5-7 against the unseeded duo of Gisela Dulko of Argentina and Shahar Peer of Israel in a 125-minute second round match.

The opening set saw Dulko and Peer having the upper hand in service by firing three aces while Sania and Schiavone struggled with their serves as they dropped two of them to give away the first set 2-6 in 27 minutes.

Vijender in World Boxing semis, ensures bronze medal

NEW DELHI: Indian boxing's jinx-breaker Vijender Singh achieved yet another historic feat as he ensured the country's first medal in the World Championships by advancing to the middle-weight semi-finals in Milan, Italy. The world number two and top seed Vijender out-punched Ukrainian Sergiy Derevyanchenko 12-4 to become the first Indian to make the last-four stage of the prestigious event. "I am on cloud nine...it's a feeling that cannot be described in words. I have broken another jinx for India and I am very happy," the 23-year-old who won India's maiden Olympic medal, a bronze in Beijing last year, said from Milan. Vijender is now up against former light heavy weight world champion Abbos Atoev, who returned to middle weight this year, but the Indian can draw confidence from the fact that he beat the Uzbek as recently as the Asian Championships in China. "I always believe that one should never get intimidated by the opponent, it hampers the performance. So, I am not even thinking about his past record. After all, what matters is how I perform in those 11 minutes when we are competing," Vijender said.

Paes-Black lose in US Open mixed doubles final

NEW YORK: Leander Paes will have to wait for his 10th Grand Slam title as the Indian and his partner Cara Black failed to defend their US Open mixed double crown, suffering a shock 2-6, 4-6 defeat at the hands of local wild cards Carly Gullickson and Travis Parrott on Thursday. Cara proved a weak link in the Indo-Zimbabwean combo as all she could do was play some feeble shots. She failed to make any impact as not even once she held her serve in the final match, which lasted just 66 minutes. Paes and Cara struggled to find their touch as numerous unforced errors flew from their racquets while their rivals played a fascinating game, especially at the net.

Clijsters crowns comeback with US Open title

NEW YORK: Belgian Kim Clijsters crowned her remarkable comeback by beating 19-year-old Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 7-5, 6-3 to win the US Open women’s title on Sunday. Clijsters, playing only her third tournament after taking more than two years off to start a family, clinched a 93-minute victory with a forehand winner and dropped to her knees in celebration, visibly sobbing. The 26-year-old Belgian climbed up to the family box to hug friends and kiss her husband, Brian, after adding a second grand slam triumph to her 2005 US Open victory. "I don't have words for this," she said on court during the trophy presentation ceremony. "I'm just glad I got to come back and defend my title from 2005. It's so exciting for me." Clijsters, unranked due to her long absence, was invited to play the Open as a wild card and had not competed at Flushing Meadows since her first grand slam triumph -- missing the 2006 championship because of injury and the last two in retirement. The Belgian said winning was "not really our plan." "I just wanted to start these three tournaments to get back into the rhythm of playing tennis and get used to the surroundings again," said Clijsters, who collected a $1.6 million prize. "So I have to thank the USTA for giving me the wild card to come back here."

Del Potro stuns Federer to win US Open

NEW YORK: Argentine sixth seed Juan Martin del Potro upset five-time defending champion Roger Federer 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 to win the US Open men's final on Monday. The shocker made Del Potro the first South American to win the US Open men's crown since countryman Guillermo Vilas in 1977, winning in his first Grand Slam final appearance to deny Swiss world number one Federer a 16th career Slam crown. Del Potro dethroned five-time defending champion Federer ending an era to win in his first Grand Slam final. "I don't have words to explain how I feel," a tearful Del Potro said, noting that a day after the day he called the greatest of his life for making the final, he felt "Much better".

Del Potro, who turns 21 next week, snapped Federer's 41-match unbeaten streak on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts to win 1.85 million dollars and destroyed the Swiss superstar's aura of US Open invincibility. "I would like to congratulate Juan Martin on an unbelievable tournament. I had a great one but he was the best," Federer said. "I would have never believed I could win five in a row here. It has been an amazing run for me." Firing consistent winners, the 1.98m Argentine giant kept the pressure upon the player many hail as the greatest in tennis history, one he had never beaten in six prior attempts, and won after four hours and six minutes.

Del Potro led Federer by two sets in the French Open semi-finals before the Swiss rallied for a dramatic five-set victory. But there was no such escape this time. Federer was pushed into a fifth set for only the third time since the start of his championship run, the other times being against Andre Agassi in the 2004 quarter-finals and in last year's round of 16 against Igor Andreev. Del Potro zipped a forehand crosscourt winner past Federer for a break and a 2-0 lead in the final set and denied the top seed on a break-point chance in the third game on his way to a 5-2 lead

Yuki starts his Davis Cup journey on winning note

Johannesburg : Yuki Bhambri made his Davis Cup debut with an impressive 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over South Africa's Izak Van Der Merwe in the inconsequential fifth rubber after India progressed to the elite World Group through Somdev Devvarman's win in first reverse singles against Rik de Voest. The junior Australian Open champion Yuki showcased his talent at the top level as he powered his way from a set-down to stun Izak. After overcoming nerves in the first set, Yuki played freely - pounding forehands, returning brilliantly and going for the quick finishes. By the third set, the ferocity of the 17-year-old's game had completely rattled his South African opponent.
