At least 17 dead as blast hits Mastung,Balochistan

At least nine people are dead and many others feared injured in an explosion in Balochistan's Mastung area near a mosque on Friday shortly after jummah prayers.

Deputy Chairman Senate Abdul Ghafoor Hyderi's convoy was the worst hit in the attack. Hyderi said, speaking to media that he had suffered minor injuries.

The explosion occurred right as Hyder's convoy exited a local mosque.

Levies sources said that at least three people were killed in the attack. Police say many others are injured and rescue operations are underway. Levies, police and Frontier Corps (FC) personnel are present at the site of the attack, which has been cordoned off.

The wounded are being taken to Mastung Civil Hospital, while those in critical condition are being transported to Quetta for treatment.

An emergency has been declared at Civil Hospital Mastung and more doctors have been called in, hospital sources said.

An explosion has killed at least 20 people in Pakistan's southwestern province of Balochistan, medical sources told Al Jazeera.

The blast took place in the town of Mastung, located about 50km south of Balochistan's provincial capital of Quetta. It appears to have targeted the convoy of Senate deputy chairman Abdul Ghafoor Haideri.

Television footage from the scene showed severe damage to several vehicles and motorcycles.

Haideri survived the attempt on his life, local TV channel Geo News reported, saying they had spoken with the senator over the phone.

Hospital official Shafi Zaidi, who heads the main hospital in Mastung, said at least 20 people were killed and another 35 wounded.

"There are at least 20 people killed from this blast. We have at least 20 dead bodies and 35 wounded at our hospital," Zaidi told Al Jazeera.

"Out of them eight to 10 are in critical condition. They were hit by pellets and shrapnel. All of them have been transferred to Quetta. We sent eight ambulances, they are in en route to Quetta."

"The senator is fine. He had superficial injuries on his body from the broken glass," Zaidi added.

Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, said Haideri was leaving with his convoy from a mosque, when the powerful explosion struck.

"There is some suspicion that it may be a suicide bomber and we are getting reports that there are heavy causalities that could possibly go up with time," Hyder said.
