Old inforgraphic,
because this particular AK-12 shown here is actually very first iteration of AK-12 that came out in 2012 (hence the name) i.e. this one

1604853136089.png

^This was the original AK-12 that participated in "Ratnik" trials in 2013

Later in late 2013-early 2014 a new prototype came out that brought several upgrades to it,meet AK-12 prototype 2

Same prototype without camo paint on it, for better understanding of its features (top one's in 7.62x39mm variant while bottom one is 5.45x39mm one)

Again, in late 2014-early 2015 a new,further upgraded variant of AK-12 came out,Prototype 3

then in 2015 and afterwords *some things* happened and this prototypes were dropped altogether and a new one, with more traditional approach came out in 2016,that is current AK-12

So what happened? my reply...

Indra rifle series developed by Astr Defence Pvt ltd. It has a different variants.

ASTR RIFLE 1.JPG

It is a small company located in Hubli Karnataka. It is established in September 2019. They unveiled the rifle in February 2020 Defence Expo. It has some external similarities with ACR Bushmaster.

According to its developer, it is ambidextrous and has non reciprocating charging handle.

Froom the looks of it, it seems initial prototype. It requires lot of fine-tuning. But design looks promising.

The only rival that Saiga 12 shortgun has is the IWI TS-12!! Its remotely the only fully automatic, Bullpup based, non-pump action shortgun with rotating magazine reload shortgun to exist. I really hope Punj Loyd gets the licence to manufacture it in India and gets ToT!!

While we're still sticking to a basic AK with rails etc,Russians seems to be trying out something new (?) with their upcoming AK prototypes

Meet AK-521

This time with SG550 series inspired (i believe) two-section receiver that hinges at front and machined top receiver with picatiny rails on top, a spring loaded dust cover on its charging handle slot that automatically opens and covers the slot when rifle is cycling.Lower receiver seems typical AK74 style stamped sheet metal one with modifications to make it work with this new upper etc.
Also the fire selector is shortened from typical AK style selector as no longer it doubles as dust cover for charging handle slot when on safe.

Article written by a friend of mine from where i took the pictures (i.e. Source) =
On 1st November i posted this vdo of new Kalashnikov prototype being fired with an article on it

After 15 days,Kalashnikov Concern officially acknowledges its existence and even provides a field stripping video on their facebook account, named AKB-521 (or AKV-521 ? since cyrilic B is equivalent to roman alphabet's V )

This seems to be the prototype without that spring operated dust cover removed from it (You can clearly see welding marks on its receiver) rest same exact weapon.

On a sidenote, it seems Ruskies have took heavy "inspirations" from an AK derivative from western side named M+M M10X which is kinda SG-550 copy.Ruskies seem to have made more traditional variant from that one with long stroke gas piston system,two-section receiver and a detachable charging handle inspired from those Quick-Detachable Mounts for slings.

That thing looks just like an AK in .308 cal at first glance... Is it piston operated? Long stroke or short stroke? If it works, it'll be a good rifle, considering the ergonomics.

They are offering a universal chassis system for different calibers and barrel lengths. Ergonomics is inspired from Bushmaster ACR and FN SCAR. According to the person who was manning the stall in Defence expo 2020, it is a short stroke piston.

Apparently Dr. Jaishankar's visit to UAE, made the Emirates diplomats bring up the caracal deal into reality.
