Japan has just proposed such an idea called the "East Asian Bloc" recently. It's more Oriental focused however, with primary interests directed towards the economic heavy hitters of South Korea, China, and Japan. This trilateral relationship is where some a significant portion of world trade occurs.

Japan, China and South Korea economies are increasingly intertwined by trade and investment. Between them, they account for 16% of global GDP and a potential market of 1.5 billion consumers. One in four of the companies on our list of the World's 2,000 Largest Companies is Chinese, South Korean or Japanese, including global household names such as PetroChina ( PTR - news - people ), Samsung and Toyota"

it is only that for many many years to come. more so if you take south asia in the context.
Are you talking about a South Asian bloc or the East Asian bloc? For sure, the East Asian bloc is a very likely possibility.

was referring to the above. it is inconceivable atleast for years to come. even SAARC is going nowhere.
atleast ASEAN has something to show.

A pan Asia block is highly unlikely and would say impossible. Even saarc is a failure. The east Asia block looks promising if tge three countries can reconcile their history and politics.

Reconciliations are already taking place ever since our new government came into power and have been less stubborn on WWII war crime/site issues. These gestures were received well by both the South Korean and Chinese population.

yes asean is truly getting somewhere and india is connected to it

barring any fiasco on nov 8 (?) ( when Dalai Lama is expected to visit Arunachal Pradesh ) i think we can see an improvement in India-china relations and if the Indian economy turns out to be the fastest-growing in 2010 , then the longer term prospect of an India-asean-china bloc may become a more realistic bet.

I think for an Asian Bloc India must solve all its terrtorial disputes with its neighbour first in order to reap the benefits of tremendous growth potential such a coalition can bring

that is going to take generations. instead of suspicions they need to trust each other and that can happen only when they can engage and nip the thorn in the bud. in the present scenario it is too naive to wish those getting sorted out because every country acts in its national interest. so it is highly unlikely.
even EU has its own problems.
best thing is go bilateral where problems exist and do business with groupings like ASEAN.

East Asian community is likely to be successful because of cultural and economic bond. The potential hinders might lie to US interference or US control on Japan. Japan's attitude on historic issues could also play a negative role.

Well the US will do every thing in its power to stop such a union to maintain there dominence i once saw a retd. indian army general in a PTV show in pakistan called mere mutabiq which was very nice informative and the way he answered the questions was very respectful he also expressed his views of a union of EU kind in Asea with pakistan and china and India it was great

You have to combine the big powers in Asia first and converge their interests before we talk about Asian union.

In this regard the Russia-India-China grouping has to become powerful and co-operate closely. Once this is sucessful, then we can expect a more favourable Asian union.

Most likley we will have regional sub groups first such as ASEAN, SAARC, SCO firming up before we have a true Asian union of sorts

so far USA has been able to block any kind of union dreams in Asia, the first example of this is SCO it never reached the potential it could have ,another USA block was Iran, Pakistan India peace pipeline that is now cancelled. This East asia block will also be prevented simply because it challenges USA economically and militarily, it is a threat to US hegemony so it will not happen. India being part of an Asian block with oriental side is unlikely an examples of failure in that is SARC ,there is already ASEAN that has many south asian nations, but there is too much bad history between India and China and involves more than Tibet and Pakistan. But India could be part of a possible block with Russia in some possible union there in the future, we have a time tested relations with the Russians and we share many common economic and scientific interests as well as joint weapons partnerships.

the territorial disputes between india and china will continue in peaceful stalemate, that is to say the prevailing peaceful situation will continue.

both sides recognise their differences and have already pledged to continue co-operating where they have similarities eg climate change forums (fora), regardless of territorial claims.

so the said disputes refered to per se are not an obstacle.
