Army looks for advanced armoured personnel carriers

Stryker vehicles will equip six brigade combat teams

NEW DELHI: Dazzled by American eight-wheeled Stryker combat vehicles during last month's `Yudh Abhyas' Indo-US wargames, the Army has launched its own hunt for armoured personal carriers (APCs). :twizt:

A global RFI (request for information) has been issued by Army's additional directorate general of weapons and equipment for procuring the wheeled APCs. The plan is to acquire at least 100 APCs, to be followed by indigenous production after transfer of technology to an Indian firm. At present, Army operates over 1,500 APCs or infantry combat vehicles called BMP-I and BMP-II, which can carry around 10 soldiers each, in its 26 mechanised infantry battalions.

It wants the new APCs to be `air-portable' in IAF's heavy-lift aircraft and `sea-portable' in Navy's amphibious `landing ship tanks', apart from having advanced weaponry, night-fighting capabilities and NBC (nuclear, chemical and biological) protection. Army's hunt for advanced APCs comes soon after the Yudh Abhyas wargames at Babina during which US, eager to grab a major chunk of the lucrative Indian arms market, showcased its high-tech weaponry like the Stryker APCs as well as the Javelin anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs).

Incidentally, as reported earlier, this was the largest overseas deployment of the Strykers after Iraq and Afghanistan, coming as the American soldiers did with 17 Stryker APCs. Costing around $1.5 million apiece, the Strykers come equipped with advanced weapons, CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) protection and C4I (command, control, communications, computers and intelligence) systems.

if we want to replace the ICV's we can go in for the BMP-3 as it is a natural evolution of the BMP-1 and 2 both of which we operate
we can go the way UAE has done or rather MKIz it you know

probably DGMF dont like that IFV, as it does not pay well, therefore it is not in their radar.

Russia's latest attempt at a tracked APC is the BMP-4/BTR-T [BMP = Boyevaya Mashina Pyekhota - Infantry Fighting Vehicle / BTR-T = Bronyetransporter-Tyazhelyy - Armored Transporter -Heavy]. It is a modified T-55 chassis with a similar turret to the BTR-80A. The configuration is based on lessons learned in Chechnya, where very heavy losses were inflicted on thin-skinned BMPs and BTRs. In response, this heavy, more survivable APC was designed for improved service in city fighting for possible use by specialized formations trained for urban warfare. It is unclear if the BTR-T will be produced for the Russian Army or for export only. This vehicle, which is too slow to keep pace with modern tanks, is unsuitabile for maneuver warfare though it mighte find applications in mountainous regions.

Specifications
Speed 60/25
Armor 22r/6r
Night Vision A or T
Armament 2A42 30mm AC (12), Konkurs (AT-5) ATGM, LMG; Stands: 1

BMP-3 Fighting Vehicle
The BMP-3 [BMP = Boyevaya Mashina Pyekhota - Infantry Fighting Vehicle], which represents a totally different design concept from BMP-1/2, is a light tank that can hold a squad of infantry. It has a 100mm main gun that fires HE to demolish buildings, can fire long-range ATGMs through its barrel, and a 30mm autocannon and a medium machine gun as a single unit in the turret. The innovative BMP-3 armament suite has been subjected to criticism in the Russian military, which has focused on deficiencies in the barrel-fired ATGM. The performance obtained from the 500 horsepower engine powering this 18 ton of vehicle compares favorably to the American Bradley, which has an engine of similar power for a 33 ton of vehicle. The BMP-3, first seen in public during a parade in Moscow in 1990, was built by Kurganmashzavod, developer and manufacturer of the BMP-2 infantry combat vehicle. The hull of the BMP-3 resembles the BMD Airborne Infantry Fighting Vehicle, with a new turret in the center of the vehicle. The troop compartment at the rear of the hull is accessed via a pair of doors in the hull rear. The BMP-3 is fully amphibious, propelled in water by two water-jets mounted at the rear of the hull.

A French SNPE ERA kit and others are available for use on the BMP-3. However, during dismounted troop movement ERA would be a hazard. Thus, passive armor is more likely and ERA application is doubtful. Other options are spall liners and air conditioning. Russian AG-17 30-mm automatic grenade launcher modification is available for use on BMP-3. Russian KBP offers a drop-in one-man turret called Kliver, with a stabilized 2A72 30-mm gun, a 4 Kornet ATGM launcher, thermal sights, and improved fire control system. The Namut thermal gunner's sight is available for use on BMP-3. This uses the French Athos thermal camera. Namut sight has 3x and 10x channels with a night acquisition range of 2,600 meters. Stowed rounds and ATGMs can be passed from the passenger compartment to the gunner for hand loading. This includes ATGMs. The "HEF" (or "HE-Shrapnel") round can be employed in indirect fire mode with air burst to 7,000 m.

VARIANTS
■BMP-3F: Amphibious Armored Combat Vehicle developed for Naval Infantry.
■BMP-3 M1995: ATGM launcher vehicle, with Kornet (AT-14) launcher and autoloader, and thermal sights.
■9P157: ATGM launcher vehicle, with Krizantema (AT-15) ATGM autoloader, MMW and thermal fire control system.
■BMP-3K: Command variant, with electronic round fuze system for 100-mm gun and a steel hull. Bow MGs are removed. Added radios are R-159, R-143 and R-174. The 1PN71 thermal sight (3.7x/11.5x) has an acquisition range against tanks of 3.0 km. The 1D14 laser rangefinder (73x and 18x sights) has a day light only acquisition range of 10.0 km. The 1PN61 passive image intensifier night sight uses a laser illuminator. In the passive mode, the Generation II (7x) sight has a night acquisition range of 1.2-1.5 km. Using the active laser pulse illuminator, the acquisition range can be extended. Tall Mike Radar has an operating band I (9.0 GHz), and detection ranges: 3.0 km against personnel, 12.0 against moving vehicles.
■BREhM-L: Armored recovery vehicle (ARV).
■BRM-3K: Combat recon vehicle with radar and 30-mm gun.
■BMP-3: UAE upgrade improvements including Namut Thermal Night sight.

BTR-90 [GAZ 5923]
The BTR-90 is intended for the transport of a section of infantry, and is a further development of the line of wheel BTR with increased firepower, mobility, passability/trafficability, maneuverability and protection.

In 1994 the Russian Army publicly displayed the BTR-90 [BTR = Bronyetransporter - Armored Transporter]. This vehicle has a slightly larger and higher hull than the previous BTR-80, with a pointed nose resembling LAV-25. It is unclear if the BTR-90 will be produced for the Russian Army or for export only. While it has the same turret as the BMP-2 , production vehicles (assuming it is accepted into service) are almost certain to have a different turret. The armored personnel carrier APC-90 has the highest benchmarks of flotation ability (all-wheel drive, independent suspension, swimming ability, low ground pressure), of mobility (high cross-country and highway speeds, offhand overcoming of water obstructions), of maneuvering capabilities (small turning radius and the ability to move forward and backward at equal speeds), of survivability (the ability to move even with all the four wheels damaged, bulletproof tires).

An armored personnel carrier of the new generation- BTR-90, has four types of weapons installed in one and the same section. These are an automatic gun, a machine-gun, a grenade launcher and an anti-tank missile complex. The equipment makes it possible to wage a fight against tanks, artillery pieces, mechanized infantry combat vehicles, helicopters and manpower of the enemy at a distance of over 4 kilometers both from a position and in movement. The high weight-carrying capacity and considerable inner capacity (12 cubic meters) of the eight-wheel BTR-90 allow to transport heavier weapons, such as an anti-tank gun, a 120-millimetre artillery piece and anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles. BTR-90 can move at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour on motorways and over 50 kilometers per hour on highly-broken ground. It can move even if its four wheels have been damaged. Despite a relatively big weight (about 21 tons) BTR-90 can without any preparations move across water obstacles due to two water-jet propellers. The machine can sail at under three-point weather and can easily travel aboard and off a landing ship. BTR-90 is the first of the armored personnel carriers which can be equipped with an automatic control system to carry out an effective control of the transmission and engine and other vitally-important parts of the machine.

Armoring and bulletproof shields protect the crew and systems from the bullets of heavy machine guns and splinters of projectiles. On BTR can be established additional armoring and systems of passive (dynamic) and active protection. The devices of collective protection provide protection of combat crew from the action of shock wave and penetrating radiation during the nuclear explosions, from the radioactive dust, bacteriological, chemical weaponry during the application of a machine in contaminated area.
