There will be no coup, PPP will complete its term and they will announce election in this yea, probably around August.
PPP and army are on the same page. Even PML Q are with them with MQM and ANP...
Trust on that.
Famous najam sethi also said that.
technically if the elections are to happen in sep/oct, and called for in august, the government wont finish the 5year term that it has been elected for, which then will be well short by at least 6 months, since the tenure of this government would only finish by 24th march 2013, and there is still more than a year for that.

geographically pakistan is such that the polls can be held in march 2013, the results also be declared in march'13 and the new government also takes oath to office in march'13.

if this short cut was to be devised, and the army and judiciary were not to take on the PPP as speculated, it would be absolutely clear there has been a compromise reached between the 3 on early polls, else there is no reason why the elections should happen in 2012.

army, judiciary and PPP are on the same page only because PPP is ready to do things as per the whims and fancies of the army and judiciary, not otherwise.

Gilani's defence of democracy over dictatorship in their Parliament was a very clever move!

The Army is possibly leaving it to the Pakistan Supreme Court to do a 'Constitutional coup'! :p

If Imran Khan comes, then there will be greater confusion since he is no politician and will act to appease popular sentiment and will lead Pakistan into greater chaos!

Kiayani is still not happy with Gilani's praising the army.

He wants Gilani's statement amended or withdrawn!

The Pakistan Army is the pillar of strength.

They ensure that the country is kept on the straight and narrow, even if they themselves do not follow their own rules or the Pakistan Constitution!!

Musharraf open to alliance with Imran Khan, but says won't serve under him

New Delhi: Former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf revealed on Friday that he was open to an alliance with Pakistan Tehreek-i Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, however, adding that he would not "work under him".

Musharraf was speaking to Karan Thapar on Devil's Advocate when he made the comments. Speaking from Dubai, he said Pakistan needed a third political option when asked whether alliance with Imran Khan was a possibility.

"I believe in setting a vision and a strategy. My vision is that we have to, for the sake of Pakistan, we have to break the political status quo. We have to come with a third political option because otherwise, the two political options presently and in the past that have been tried, have failed.

"So where do we go? If we go to the same people, it will be the same thing again, you keep down. So in that context, I said we have to break the political status quo. If anyone can do it individually, well and good. Otherwise there is a need of coalition of forces which can bring about that third political option which can deliver to Pakistan."

When probed further on the issue, he added, "You clap with two hands... What you said (about the alliance with Imran Khan being a possibility) is correct. There are people in his party who do not want an alliance with me. Those who say that, they don't understand what they are talking."

"If they don't want alliance, certainly I would not like to have an alliance," he said.

If Imran won and became the prime minister, was the retired General prepared to serve under him?

"No. These are later issues. If he wins, certainly he will be the prime minister. In a coalition, there are other things. Certainly I cannot serve under him. No. That is not a possibility."

The General further said that he was aware of the danger to his life in Pakistan and was prepared to face arrest upon his return from exile.

"Well, the danger is there, of arrest, and I have considered that and one has to take that danger," he said.

"The other thing is, (the possibility that) I will not return to power - that is a question mark. I am going back to contribute to the political situation and hopefully will do well in the election," he said.

Musharraf is a non entity today.

He requires to hand onto the coattails of the rising star to remain relevant, even relegating himself in the shadow!

Pakistan SC orders contempt charges against Yousuf Raza Gilani

Islamabad: The Pakistan Supreme Court on Monday ordered contempt charges against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) case, a corruption amnesty issued by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf in 2007.

Gilani has been ordered by the seven-member bench of the Supreme Court led by Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk to appear before it in person on January 19 for failing to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari and over 8,000 others.

Gilani has been ordered to personally appear in court to explain why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him for deliberately disregarding the court's orders on the reopening of the corruption cases.

While pointing out that the Gilani government has been issued directions several times by the Supreme Court to implement its orders regarding the NRO cases, the government had deliberately not acted on these orders.

With the issue of the contempt notice to Gilani, another round of confrontation between the government and the judiciary is brewing. The ruling Pakistan People's Party is already in a face off with the powerfull military over the memo scandal.

Earlier, while hearing the case the apex court had directed Attorney General Anwarul Haq 20 minutes to speak to the government and seek advice on the NRO case.

Gilani, cornered by the Supreme Court and the powerful military, could seek a vote of confidence in the National Assembly to save his embattled government. He will chair a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee of the coalition partners of government at his residence before Parliament session.

Gilani is expected to win the vote on a resolution that seeks endorsement and support for "efforts made by the political leadership for strengthening democracy" and calls for reposing "full confidence and trust" in the leadership on Monday evening even as reports claim the powerful military led Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani would rally behind the Supreme Court.

The Pakistani Prime Minister has been defiant and told Parliament that the country does not need another dictators but a strong democracy. He has also rejected the Army's demand that he retract his criticism of the military, saying "I will not answer to any individual as I am answerable to Parliament."

The NRO introduced by former president Musharraf in 2007 cleared corruption cases between 1986-1999 and let off many tainted politicians and bureaucrats. Several murder charges were also dropped under the NRO.

Many say the NRO allowed former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto to return to Pakistan. She was assassinated in December 2007.

The Supreme Court declared the NRO unconstitutional in 2009.

It seems there will be a constitutional coup rather than a military coup.

Others are suggesting that PPP might save itself from SC rage by agreeing to open cases against Zardari and write to Swiss authorities about his bank accounts. But due to some immunity, Zardari being president of Pakistan will be given immunity by swiss authorities by default and nothing will be probed by them on this issue. This way pressure on PPP will be released and Zardari will remain safe as long as he sticks to his gaddi.
