India’s second nuclear-armed submarine is now ready for launch, a critical step towards a planned quick induction into the Indian Navy to strengthen strategic deterrence. The ‘Aridaman’, which has been under construction at the secretive Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam, could be launched as early as in the next six to eight weeks.

Sources have told ThePrint that the submarine – larger, more powerful and better equipped than India’s first nuclear sub INS Arihant – has undergone all work required at the dry dock and will shortly be launched into water for further outfitting.

The launch ceremony is a critical milestone in naval shipbuilding, signifying that all major work including integration of heavy machinery and equipment is complete. The ceremony would also require political clearance. The 2009 launch of INS Arihant was a major media event by the UPA government.

The status and progress on Aridaman has been a tightly guarded secret, with no Indian official authorised to talk about the project. The nuclear submarine program is directly monitored by the National Security Advisor (NSA).

After the launch, which is basically a flooding of the dry dock followed by a gentle slipping of the submarine into the sea, the Aridaman will be moved to ‘Site Bravo’, a covered test area for further work. The launch is technically possible any time now but it will be a while – a year at the earliest – for the boat to be ready for sea trials.

BIG PROGRESS

Although INS Arihant is the first Indian nuclear armed boat, the long developmental period, testing and technological issues it faced has meant that it is more of a technology demonstrator. The Aridaman is set to be the first credible underwater nuclear weapon delivery platform, with shipbuilders and designers learning from the first construction.

Not only is the boat larger and equipped to carry more of the K-15 submarine launched missiles, it will also have a more powerful reactor than the 83 MW one on board the Arihant. More importantly, Indian shipbuilders have drastically cut down construction time on the boat.

Work on the Aridaman started in earnest after the Arihant was launched in 2009. While the Arihant took 11 years to reach the launch stage, Aridaman has got there within eight. The Indian Navy is hopeful that the time to induction will also be cut. Faced with technological challenges, it took the Arihant seven years to go from launch to induction – a quiet commissioning was done last year – but the Navy is believed to be looking at an ambitious two-year target for the Aridaman.

THE NEXT STEPS

After being moved under the power of harbour tugs to Site Bravo, the Aridaman will undergo several tests over the next year, including the crucial activation of the nuclear reactor. All major components that include the all-important missile launchers and torpedo tubes are already integrated and the submarine would be tested using external power.

After the systems pass all safety tests using external power, the nuclear reactor of the submarine – developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) – will be activated. After the nuclear reactor stabilises, the boat will again undergo safety checks for all systems before being moved to the stage of harbour trials.

Sea trials will subsequently commence to take the submarine through the rigours of combat duty. This will include submerged tests, high speed cruises and firing from torpedo and missile tubes. Indian Navy crews – who are also operating the INS Chakra nuclear attack submarine leased from Russia – will be transferred to carry out tests and the induction process for Aridaman.

Besides the plans for nuclear armed submarines, India has also cleared a project to construct a new line of nuclear-powered but conventionally-armed submarines (SSNs). The mammoth plan, expected to cost over $12 billion, is for six modern vessels to be made in India. First official comments on the plan came in 2015 with a senior Navy officer revealing that the design work had started on the project and the aim is to come out with a new class of submarines within 15 years.

Hmmm so does this have 8 or 12 canisters? I think Arihant if equipped with a more powerful reactor 150 MW can be converted into prototype SSN/GN.

Arihnat is a test bed for india's nuke powered subs.Arihant siblings would be more lethal and superior with credible second strike capability !!

It was already on trials and it should be ready for formal induction and PATROL (or maybe was already Patrolling).

What is surprising is timing of announcement with India locking horns with China at Doklam, it is also a subtle way to remind China we have assets which can be used if matter is escalated and bring Lizard to table for negotiation and resolving Doklam and other border issues permanently.

Indian Navy is our true Savior with immaculate planning and Indian Army too to some extent with IAF being a BIG Disappointment (they had set their capabilities vis a vis Pakistan while the real enemy was always China).

Source Based news (cross posting from IDF @PARIKRAMA)

Aridhaman Launched about X months back.. (won't reveal exact date..)

125 MW Reactor with longer life and improved design

8 V Silos

Noise level further improved then First boat due to improved material and design maturity..

K5 ejection test completed.. next set of tests will be done as per schedule..

Payload very different then before.. capable of hitting multiple targets at a distance of 200+ kms from the original target as done by unitary warhead..

The next 2 subs will get out soon as well...

Good news on SSN reactor will come out soon.. that reactor will be used for heaviest SSBN (16 silos housing only ICBM of longest range) and for the SSNs

this is how india should go about with induction of new weaponry. do it quietly without much fanfare . dont give enemy idea about all the weapons we possess thereby giving them chances to develop countermeasures for it.some weapons should be secretive and to be pulled out only at the time of conflict thereby leaving enemy clueless. i hope india possesses some such weapons which general public and even politicians are unaware of and is known only to few high ranking defence personnel. its time india developed its own area 51. politicians should show some maturity by not indulging in grandstanding and boast everytime a key weapon is added to the armoury.

It's time we launch a few Agnis too. The time is ripe for that. We need to show real muscle unlike what the lizards are doing by spewing out vile and nonsensical propaganda through rag tabloids like the Global Times that mean zilch.

You sure your source is correct? Coz K5 doesn't exists, its K4. K5 is reserved for 10,000 ton NG-SSBN

It is from PARIKRAMA he is always bang on target..... He broke Rafale deal So did Kaveri Engine deal with France and many more.......

Also do remember as per record there was no SLBM in 2010 but we all know K-15 was tested from pontoon even before that (around 2007). K-4 was always denied but lid blew off in 2013 (deliberate leak), it is 2017 now 4 years is more than enough to test ejections from PONTOONS and full tests of one should be nearby and announcement (or deliberate leak) can come in 2020..............

Also who stops us from using these missiles from PONTOONS itself we have huge coastlines and several islands and one of these islands could be holding a K-4 or K-5 PONTOON. So we may not even need SSBN to fire one............

INS Aridhaman: More Power, More Weapons and Emergence of India’s true Nuclear Triad
Published August 25, 2017 SOURCE: Anand SG / FOR MY TAKE / IDRW.ORG

In my previous report on INS Aridhaman (Click Here ), Snoop about possible 2017 Soft launch of India’s Second Nuclear Ballistic Missile Submarine is turning into a reality after ” The Print ” report also confirmed possible Soft launch soon by PM Modi in coming weeks. Following INS Aridhaman development closely and keeping track of unverified data, there has been a lot of buzz, lately for some time now that the Aridhaman has been carrying out system check in the dry docks though external power, even though Nuclear reactor is yet to go critical. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) already has commissioned and assembled Second nuclear reactor for the submarine which will be more powerful than the reactor which was installed in the lead ship Arihant which has already been commissioned in the Indian Navy last year. Coming nearly 8 years after Arihant had its soft launch in 2009, Aridhaman according to unconfirmed reports will share same design but will have stretched centreline to accommodate more weapons and bigger Nuclear reactor and will also have Second generation upgrades to its communication and Sonar suite to make it much more lethal in the sea. INS Aridhaman is likely to take much shorter time to complete its Sea trials and induction due to rigours trials already been carried out on INS Arihant of many Critical weapons systems like K-15 and K-4 Submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM). Aridhaman will also likely be the first submarine to carry India’s next generation long ranged K-5 Submarine-launched ballistic missile with MIRV warheads up to 6000-8000 km range targets. Follow on Sister ship to INS Aridhaman is already under fabrication stage and will be Similar to Aridhaman but will receive some minor updates as technology progresses. Once the third ship is launched, INS Arihant will be used to train next generation submariners for operating Nuclear Submarines since Indian Navy after completion of SSBN Program will start work on SSN ( Nuclear Attack ) Submarine program for which it has already got government clearance for construction of Six submarines.

Govt. gives Army free hand to mobilise troops against China. Air Force asked to remain ready
Friday, August 25, 2017 By: Assam Tribune Source Link: CLICK HERE

Though India is not apprehending any war amidst the standoff with China in Doka-La area, the Prime Minister has given a free hand to the forces to mobilise and the Indian Air Force has been asked to remain as stand-by to deal with any eventuality.

Highly placed security sources told The Assam Tribune that the free hand given to the forces to mobilise is just a precautionary measure so that the forces can stay ready to defend the country’s territory wherever required.

The Government of India is of the view that China may try to create minor troubles in different parts of the international border like the minor scuffle that took place in Ladakh area on August 15, but at present, India is not apprehending a war.

Sources said that the Indian Army has also told the Prime Minister that the Indian forces are fully capable of holding ground in Doka-La area. “If the Indian Army can control Siachen for so many years in a much hostile climatic condition, there is no reason why we cannot control Doka-La,” the Army officers reportedly assured the Prime Minister.

Sources further pointed out that at present, India is in a much advantageous position in Doka-La area as Indian troop mobilisation is much nearer to the area and China would have to go much deeper to bring in troops in case of any eventuality. At the same time, sources said that after October, when snowfall starts in the area, both sides would find it difficult to stay put in Doka-La.

Security sources further said that China may keep the standoff on till October as the President of the country Xi Jinping is seeking re-election and after the election, there is every possibility of the standoff coming to an end. Moreover, it is apparent that China was not apprehending resistance from India and now “they are issuing rhetorical statements through the state controlled media.”

However, at the same time, sources admitted that control over the Doka-La area would not only allow China to gain a strong foothold in Bhutan, but it would also give the neighbouring country access to the narrow corridor connecting the Northeast region with the rest of the country and the Government of India is fully aware of the situation and decided to maintain a tough stand on the issue.

10 days to fueling the Aridhaman

Posted onAugust 25, 2017

(Arihant, underway)

The second indigenous Arihant-class SSBN, INS Aridhaman, is completely outfitted, all inside of 7 years from the time when its keel was laid at the Vizag special projects facility. It took less time to produce than the Ohio-class SSBN rolling out of the General Dynamics Electric Boat facility at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and Groton, MA, which complex has by now manufactured over a hundred SSBNs and SSNs for the US Navy.

Aridhaman will be fueled up ten days from today, i.e., around September 5, and the more powerful nuclear reactor in it (than in the Arihant) will be fired up soon thereafter. The vessel will then be ready to undergo harbour trials and conduct shallow dives before the trials take to the open sea.

Not too long ago, the Chinese Navy launched its Laoning-class aircraft carrier with much fanfare. It will take PLAN 15-20 years to integrate the carrier into fleet ops. India’s more strategic riposte with the Aridhaman, especially with the continuing eyeballing situation in the Doklam area of the trijunction, is a perfect reminder to the Central Military Commission headed by the recently anointed “Supreme commander of the people’s army”, Xi Jinping, that it won’t do his regime any good exercising the intimidation techniques of threatening, huffing and puffing, feints, etc. recommended by the ancient Confucian strategist Suntze in lieu of actual action. If the hope is that a sufficiently cowed adversary will back down, India’s posture to-date will have belied it. India is not backing down. So Beijing has a choice of backing down, as gracefully as it possibly can, and lose face partially. Or, stick on and lose face totally.

The Aridhaman, moreover, has 8 tubes to launch the K-4 2,500 km SLBMs — twice the number of tubes as the Arihant, and can carry some 24 land-attack K-15 missiles as well. The twin SSBN set will by end-2018 be able to drop a whopping nuclear load on Shanghai and the coast line to the east and west of that metropolis — the main wealth-generating region of China. Not a bad thing for the 2nd Artillery Strategic Forces to keep in mind. Meanwhile, with the second Akula-II SSN — the agreement for its lease from Russia is at the stage of crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s — entering IN service, the Laoning will be well advised to stay well east of the Malacca Strait.

There’s, moreover, general relief in the ASEAN states and the now Brahmos-armed Vietnam as also in the Far East, particularly Japan, with the recent developments in South Asia. India’s firm handling of the Doklam issue, which together with the second Indian SSBN soon showily taking to the waters, will increase manifold the confidence of the states on the Chinese periphery in India, and help douse the dragon’s fire. And its ‘tianxia’ ambition

  1. How come I never saw that wonderful pic of INS Arihant. It looks soooooo powerful. Can only imagine what a beast INS Aridhaman looks like.
  2. Please tell Bharat Karnad that the range of K-4 in 3500 km and not 2500 km. Can't believe that guy made such a mistake.
  3. Take that Jinping. F*** you greetings from the IN and Nuclear Command Authority (and from Bharat Karnad as well).

Thats a video grab from news channels. It has been circulated around. No one knows the real range of K-4. Both 3.5K and 2.5K are fudge anyway.

There's a complete video on YouTube of INS Arihant. This foto is from that video. Actually the payload of k-4 is 2500kgs and range is 3500kms but if payload is lower then range could be more.

Yup with 1.2-1.5 tonne (3-4 MIRV) it can do 5000 km easily. K-4 is not true ICBM just enough to neuter china.
