Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, 36, chairman of the moderate faction of Kashmir’s All Parties Hurriyat Conference, told HT on Thursday.

It was a startling shift in position of a man who has been one of the leading symbols of the Kashmir Valley movement for separation from India.

“Hurriyat is keen on starting a dialogue with both India and Pakistan,” Farooq said, adding the Centre seemed to have realised “the Hurriyat was not articulating the Pakistani point of view, nor was it interested in embarrassing India at international forums”. He has been invited to one such forum in New York next week: The Organisation of Islamic Confe-rence foreign ministers meet.

Mirwaiz, which means chief preacher in Urdu, wields considerable influence in the Muslim majority state.

The Hurriyat is looking at a solution that revolves around “demilitarisation, self-governance and better people-to-people contact with the other part of Kashmir (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir)” he said.

A bogus just like all these separatists have been fooling the citizens of the country as well as the ground forces for decades. They all deserve to be taken down hard. Call it a massacre but this is the only way to end terrorism in my personal view. The armed forces should be given a free reign in crushing such terrorists and anti-nationalistic traitors.

Do we need a graveyard named Kashmir? If Kashmir is a state of India we cant allow anyone to massacre its people. Not even to our own armed force.
If nobody is there to check even armed force will be interested in fake encounters for promotions and medals instead of risking life countering actual militants. Such incidents are not rare. What you have mentioned is not the way to finish terrorism but paving the ground for much bigger blow back. If we just look to our neighbours we can see how full reign of armed force resulted in.

Reciprocating Pakistan's gesture of observing solidarity day with Kashmiris tomorrow, Moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq today asked people to pray for sovereignty, stability and prosperity of that country.

Describing Pakistan as a 'sympathiser' and 'fort of Islam' in an advertisement titled 'February 5 - Youm-e-Dua and Izhar-e-Tashakur', the Hurriyat moderates claimed that country "is not only lending political, moral and diplomatic support to the struggle for the right to self-determination in J and K but also doing its best at the international level for the resolution of Kashmir issue.

May be the financial package that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is getting from GOI now is more than what he was getting from Pakistan. But for me the good news is, there is less violence in J & K these days. Be it J & K or any part of India, only the common man suffers when there is any kind of violence.

There are paid stone pelters in J&K was in news recently. I do not think we can use force that much, I think we are doing it right. People are fed up of all the violence, this works best. Pakistan has lost the game already.

There are three groups here that need different approaches

(1) The militants, mainly foreign nationals that need to be killed or captured, no excuses. Their facilitators need to be arrested and prosecuted, They have hardly any support by the locals and they are usually at the forefront in neutralizing them through tipoffs as part of the local J&K police

(2) Separatists groups who are locals and usually consists of hardliners. These have to be defeated at their own game. Force them to spell out what they have done for the common people. The J&K political and other parties registered with the Election commission should snatch the issues they raise that can be resolved within the Indian constitution to reduce their space. For example, probing issues related to unjust or extrajudicial killings, army deployments and corruption. I think the J&K govt. and GoI have got that right as PDP intrudes into Hurriyet political space in this regard and reduces their appeal. Moreover, the separatists have not come up with a single clear proposal on what "Aazadi" means to them while the PDP and NC have come out clearly with their visions.

(3) The common masses who may sometimes tip towards the separatists and sometimes towards the pro-India parties based on the situation. For example, the recent killings of the 16 and 14 year old boys allowed the separatists to hijack an issue that could have been raised by the PDP, INC or any other political party. By marginalizing the Hurriyet on these issues, and giving results (such as punishment to perpetrators and relief to the affected) by political parties working within the constitution, they can again claim that the Hurriyet has done nothing except raise slogans while the other parties not only got the perpetrators punished but looked after the affected people as well

ejaz, thumbs up to your post. But along with that some other steps are required. The media plays an important role in such scenarios. Indian Govt needs to be presented in a positive light by the media within Kashmir. Call it propaganda or call it brainwash, but thats very important. The media needs to be influenced or bribed within Kashmir to influence people with pro-india sentiments. Also the Central Govt must look like it is taking steps to develop kashmir. Those steps must be visible to aam aadhmi in his day-to-day life.

Also, the people of Kashmir need to be modernised. The more people start taking interest in going to movies, watching TV serials, sports..etc,, the less likely they would get involved in 'mass movements' inspired by 'religion'.

Lastly, separatists need to be bribed, coaxed and influenced to turn pro-india. I never understood why India has not done it before. The extreme hardliners and terrorist protectors need to be cleansed off but the oppurtunists must be utilised by india.

There should be good Gvt spending to develop the infrastructure and create jobs. A person will prefer to be Govt employee than a jehadi. May be my stupid thought. But number of youths getteing trapped by the jehadi mullahs has a link with unemployment in the state. Situation should be such that seperation from Indian union seems a huge loss to the Kashmiries.
