It the prominent cross guard that's interesting. Cross guards show up alot in the cave paintings too, but rarely in high tier art.

11th Century AD, Chola, Brihadishvara Temple, Thanjavur

Chola Blade with the typical early-late medieval Indian quillons.

You can see the same quillons in modern Khandas some times Talwars. Termed the Hindu Basket Hilt. There is now an addition of hand guards and appendage below the pommel.

Group of soldiers hunting a lion and stealing a cub?

Soldiers have a buckler shield, spear, spotted coat, waist sash, and boots, etc.

Sword of Allauddin Khilji, early 14th century. The Quranic verse "In the name of God, the most beneficent and the most merciful. Help from God and a near victory”. Currently a part of the Sir Ratan Tata art collection at the CSMVS museum in Mumbai.

i dont know its authenticity that if it indeed is from 14th century but the basket hilt/hand guard can be clearly seen here

These all evidences seem to confirm presence of knuckle bow/hand guard in many centuries before european contact with India. Interesting to note that the Hoysala one has a roundish D shaped knuckle bow whereas chola ones have rectangularish shaped knuckle bow.
