Add 10 more years to FOC.

That sounds good enough.
AMCA will have 2 variants, Mk1 which will be non-stealthy config and Mk2 which will be stealthy config.
I feel AMCA Mk1 might be ready by 2030 and Mk2 by 2035.
But due to China virus, a dealy of 1-2 years is expected.

Nope, AMCA is going to have 2 variants.
A stealthy and non-stealthy variant.
Amca will be stealthy from day 1.
It will have two versions though.
Mk1 with f414 engine without supercruise by 2029-30( firstfly by 2024 )
Mk2 with 110kn+ engine supercruise. full stealth with unmanned wingman , drone swarm etc. By 2035. ( Engine may be k10 or f414 epe depending upon development).

Covid 19 will halt all imports. Indigenous programs will continue . Govt will be printing much more money to deal with crisis. And more make in India is necessary to revive economy by providing more and more jobs.
How many scientists are working now? And the like all previous govt this one will also give less priority to defence & R&D in the event of financial crunch. This lock down itself is costing us around 9 lakh crores.

All govt labs are working overtime to fight covid19. Drdo is developing ventilator / sanitizer /ppe which are most affordable in the entire world.

The larger point is this. As covid 19 will reduce govt budgets there will be no money for import programs like mmrca or naval jets or more Apache etc. So to make do with less budget armed forces will have to go to indeginous equipment more lca more mwf and more lch . Because budget won't recover for few years . Development funds for ongoing programs are already secured they might face delay of 1-2 years but imports are gone saving much more money.

Unlike most Indians here believe, domestic R&D is much more expensive than import in short term (10-20 years) because
1. You have to build up your own R&D infrastructure from scratch;
2. You have to allow your scientists to do all those expensive experiments (other countries have done decades ago) to accumulate the basic knowledge;
The list goes on and on....

All these costs can only be amortised in next 20-30 years. The advanced countries like US and Russia, these costs were already paid off while the developing countries are still paying the bills.

When the economy is getting into the trouble, the response of everyone is the same: cut the R&D because current survival is more important than the benefit of R&D that can only be realised years later.

It'd be great if all the stakeholders in defence matters start realising the importance of self reliance in defence sector and the self reliance will only come through R&D effort. It is pity that India's overall r&d spending in science &technology hovers around a meager 0.8 p.c of its GDP. This is is far lower as compared to Israel (4.6 per cent), South Korea (4.5 per cent), Japan (3.2 per cent), Germany (3.0 per cent), USA (2.8 per cent), France (2.2 per cent) etc. All the r&d spending in India is done by the central government and it's agencies; dept of space and dept of atomic energy are the biggest spender in India, that's why they are reaping rewards but private sector spending is negligible. It is well known that r&d spending augments productivity and growth. This spending should increased to 2 p.c. otherwise we will remained as dependent to other for defence high end technology like engine hot section and others.
