All 11 ABG Interceptor Class fast attack crafts inducted

The ABG Interceptor Class vessels are series of eleven fast attack crafts being built by ABG Shipyard, Surat for the Indian coast guard. The ships are intended as a cost-effective platform for patrol and rescue operations in close coast and shallow waters.

Design

Gavin Mair was the Chief designer behind the 26 metre long Interceptors. The vessels were sold as semi knocked down units (SKDs) or kitsets "Interceptor 26" to end customer Indian Coast Guard through the project managers Thornycroft Maritime and assembled by ABG Shipyard in India. The boat have an endurance of 500 nautical miles at a speed of 25 knots and is equipped with jet propulsion system, making it capable of travelling at speeds up to 45 knots when required. By carefully balancing the beam, deadrise and optimum LCG the craft achieves a high speed with a WIDE HULL which means two important things for the operators:

1. Greater stability and hence less rock and roll = more crew comfort.
2. Excellent below deck space, particularly in the engine room and accommodation.

The Mono aluminium hulled vessels have a crew of eleven enrolled personnel ie 01 officer and 10 sailors. The interceptor craft are fitted with ultra modern navigational and communication equipment and are designed to perform surveillance, search and rescue, anti-smuggling and anti-poaching operations in close coast. In addition to small arms, the boats are also fitted with 12.7 mm 'Prahari' Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) to augment the vessels fire power.

ABG Shipyard Limited got the order in the year 2006 for building 11 interceptor boats for 1.93bn rupees (Rs 17.63 crore per unit).

how that stupid person can claim himself of being a designer. these boats are obtained from foreign firm in form of semi knocked down kits.

just assembled in India.

people wanted to know why private sector's contribution and talent not been roped in by government and why JVs between MoD and private shipyards is getting deferred again and again. the answer is simple--> PRIVATE SECTOR DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO OFFER THEY ARE PARASITE, NO SERVICE LONG BILLS!!! MASTERS IN EXTORTION

Well its a start for ABG and probably largest contract to any any private shipyard by volume, a good thing to say the least. I hope now MoD and Navy will not see ABG as inexperienced and give respect to whatever experience it has gathered through this project. Cheers to start!

Well they were designed by somebody, and that person is Gavin Mair, and he's australian, not Indian.

Also, you may have heard of the classic management choice - build or make.

Interceptor boat to join Coast Guard fleet at Porbandar

Oct 22, 2011

AHMEDABAD: Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) C-153, a water jet propelled vessel with an endurance of 500 nautical miles at 25 knots and capable of doing high speed up to 45 knots, will be commissioned at Porbandar on Saturday. The ICGS C-153, the 11th and the last in the series of 11 Interceptor Boats (IBs) built by M/s ABG Shipyard, Surat, will be based at Veraval after its commissioning by vice admiral Anil Chopra AVSM, director general, Indian Coast Guard. The 30 metre long vessel is fitted with latest state-of-the-art navigation, communication equipment and armament, making it an ideal platform for close coast/shallow water operations, a defence release said, adding its induction will enhance the security along Gujarat's coast.

Meanwhile, the Union government has sanctioned necessary funds to the Indian Coast Guard for new acquisitions and has put on fast track all its pending cases of acquisitions. The work to put up a chain of static radars along the Indian coastline has also begun. It will help achieve real time monitoring and surveillance of coastal areas and the data would be shared at different levels by the maritime security agencies for quick and effective response to a developing situation at sea. The sanctioned strength of the ICG stations is 42 and 15 Air units along the coastline, the release said.
