Serbia Sold 282 Modernized T-55 Tanks To Pakistan

The Ministry of Defence of Serbia sold 282 T-55 tanks to Pakistan Army, which were from the arsenal marked as an obsolete equipment, Serbian Daily ‘Blic’ reported.

The deal was agreed at the Arms Fair in Belgrade, and the contract of purchase, worth tens of millions of dollars, will be signed next week. A source from the Army told the daily that this contract is very important for the Serbian Army.

“The tanks, which had to be sold as obsolete equipment, will be modernized and sold to Pakistanis. Modernization will increase T-55 value many times. The deal was made in great secrecy because it is a contract worth tens of millions of dollars. An agreement in principle was reached in person with Pakistani Minister of Defense Industry,” said the source.
‘Blic’ findings were indirectly confirmed by the Chief of the Defence Technology in the Ministry of Defence, Major General Bojan Zrnic.

“It is true that there was an agreement in principle for the sale of 282 tanks from the arsenal of retired and obsolete military equipment, but I do not want to talk about with which country and the army this deal was made. It would not be appropriate because the contract has not been signed. What can I say is that the offer is extremely favorable for the Army of Serbia as the tanks will not be sold in its current state, they will be modernized first. This task will be entrusted to our defense industry,” says General Zrnic.

He added that the money from the deal will go into the budget for new weapons.

Pakistan to buy Pantsir-S1 and T-90 tanks from Russia
Pakistan is now planning to send a delegation to Moscow to finalise the deal and also have an arrangement for training defence personnel to the Pantsir system. "Pakistan is buying the latest and most modern weapon system to counter India. Pakistan is eyeing to procure tank, anti-aircraft guns and surface-to-air missile system from Russia", an Indian Defence Ministry official told Zee News.

Pakistan had already drawn up a plan to also buy 360 T-90 tanks from Russia to bolster its combat power along the border with India, apparently in the same MS version that form the backbone of some Indian armoured regiments, which makes Moscow the “winner” by selling the same tank to both enemies.

Pakistan is trying to forge a deeper defence corporation with Russia, which has been India's 'all-weather' ally and shares a defence relationship that goes back to the Soviet era, Indian Defence News comments. Pakistan trying for closer ties with Russia is evident from joint military exercises along with defence deals which have triggered concerns in New Delhi.

In another effort to revamp its armoured fleet, Pakistan has decided to buy nearly 600 tanks with Chinese help. At present, over 70 % of Pakistani tanks have night-time operational capabilities, which is a concern for India. In the aftermath of the growing international pressure on Pakistan to reign in Islamist groups active on its soil, China has decided to come in support of its 'all-weather ally'. China will sell long-range CH-4 and CH5 Rainbow drones to Pakistan. The CH-4 can carry up to 400 kilograms of explosives and can stay in the air for 40 hours. It can cover a range of up to 5,000 kilometres. Rainbow CH-5 can carry up to 1,000 kilograms of military load and stay in the air up to 60 hours. The drone can fly at up to 17,000 feet.

In February 2019, the Indian Defence Ministry had approved the acquisition of 54 Israeli Harop drones for the Indian Air Force which can crash into high-value enemy military targets to destroy them. The IAF has an inventory of around 110 of such drones which have been renamed as P-4. But Pakistan did not have any long-range combat drone until now.

Pakistan to buy Russian Missile system to counter India
Pakistan is expected to purchase Russian-made Pantsir Missile System which is a medium-range surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery weapon system from Moscow. Islamabad has been reaching out to Moscow, in an effort attempt to deepen its military relationship with that country. “The idea is to foster closer relations with one of India’s oldest allies. For countering India, it has expressed its intention to buy latest and modern weapon systems including the Pantsir Missile System from that country,” a source who wished to remain anonymous said.

“A delegation from that country is expected to visit Moscow to finalize the deal which will include training of the defence personnel for Pantsir Missile System and also to discuss the acquisition of T-90 tanks to be placed on the border with India” added the source. India has raised its concern with Russia related to Pakistan’s attempts to get closer to that country. Besides defence deals both Russia and Pakistan also had joint military exercises.

Though almost 70 percent of armoured vehicles have night time operational capabilities, which are a huge concern for India, Pakistan has decided to buy around 700 tanks from China.

As has been reported earlier by Financial Express Online, China has also decided to will sell long-range, technically-advanced unmanned aerial vehicle ‘Rainbow’ CH-4 and CH5 to Pakistan.

These drones will be used for surveillance on the international border (IB) and the Lince of Control (LOC). While CH-4 can carry up to 400 kilograms of explosives and stay in the air for 40 hours, it can also cover a range of up to 5,000 kilometers.

Rainbow CH-5 has the capacity to carry up to 1,000 kilograms of explosives and stay in the air up to 60 hours. The drone can fly at up to 17,000 feet.

Earlier this year, the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) had given approval for 54 Israeli HAROP attack drones for Indian Air Force (IAF) which has the capability of crashing into high-value enemy military targets and to destroy them completely.

What is the Pantsir Missile System?

The system is equipped with an array of radars for tackling and target-acquisition.

Employing precision munitions at the low to extremely low ranges.

Is capable of providing air defence cover to military installations against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missile, and UAVs.

I am always wondering,

people are talking of 21 st century warfare which will be run on netowrked drones, planes and ships ... forces will be just for territory occupation... how much sense it makes to get these medieval tanks now ..

maintain a basic minimum fleet and concentrate on better technologies... Tanks.. words itself sound so much abused

Why Pakistan is buying T-55 Tanks? Instead of investing in Anti Tank Warfare equipment like Anti Tank Missiles, Better equipment for Infantry for holding tanks at bay? creating stand off weapons against Tanks

Its Armour protection against KE Sabots pathetic
Its not more than 400 mm

Even Milan 2T can achieve significant damage
On its Armour and Lower armour

Konkurs M will eat 😋 it alive

Spike MR and Kornet-E is not even in picture
In tests, the newer ERA has a protection level of 350-450mm vs APFSDS and 450-550mm vs HEAT. Al-Khalid is also equipped with an active protection system known as VARTA.
HIT is working on an indigenous APS system for future batches, especially for Al-Khalid 2.

APS is soft kill one not hard kill like Trophy

Nevertheless APS only protect you against 50%
ATGM's and RPG's
It not effective and failed many times

What is more menacing is KE Sabot rounds
Specifically Tungsten and DU rounds

Pakistan Army inducts first batch of Al-Khalid-I MBTs
The Pakistan Army (PA) officially inducted into service its first batch of Al-Khalid-I main battle tanks (MBTs) in a ceremony held on 28 July at the facilities of state-owned defence manufacturer Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) in the Rawalpindi District of the Pakistan’s Punjab Province.

In a statement issued that same day, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistani military, said that several units of the tank, which is an improved variant of the in-service Al-Khalid MBT, were handed over to the PA’s Armoured Corps. The video shows at least 20 Al-Khalid-Is lined up at the ceremony.

During the ceremony, which was also attended by Pakistan’s chief of army staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the platform displayed some of its capabilities, including “mobility, speed, bi-axis gun stabilisation of the control system, and use of smoke screen to mask movement”, said ISPR, adding that the new tanks will be handed over to formations that have a “critical and decisive role during war”.

The Al-Khalid-I is part of a joint venture between Pakistan, China, and Ukraine, and is believed to be intended to replace approximately 300 Type 85 and 320 T-80UD MBTs. Compared with the Al-Khalid, the first units of which entered service in 2001, the upgrade is comprehensive and appears to be angled at making the design competitive with the Indian Army’s fleet of T-90S MBTs.
