Indian Army Orders Akash Missile System

Dr. Prahlada, chief controller for Aeronautics & Services Interaction at the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), tells Aviation Week that the initial army order will be for two regiments — approximately 2,000 missiles. "The order also includes ground systems, radars and launchers," Prahlada says.
The Rs 14,000 crore ($3.1 billion) contract already has been signed by the army and BDL. The company is expected to make 500 missiles per year, and the first batch will roll out by September 2012. "All the missiles under this order will be of the same version," Prahlada says.
The Indian military's combined orders of AMS, including two radars, have a total worth of Rs 23,300 crore ($5.18 billion). The Akash missile systems consist of a launcher, a missile with a 25-30-km (16-19-mi.) range, control center, multifunction fire control radar and supporting ground equipment.

IAF orders another 750 Akash SAMs

IAF orders another 750 Akash SAMs

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has ordered an additional 750 Akash medium-range surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) from state-run defence behemoth Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) at a cost of Rs.42.79 billion ($925 million), it was announced here Tuesday.

"A decision to place this fresh order with BEL was taken after the IAF expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Akash missiles that are deployed in two squadrons," Defence Minister A.K. Antony said on Tuesday.

The IAF will deploy 125 missiles each in six squadrons as and when BEL delivers them.
"The first order for 250 missiles was placed last year on a pilot basis. The IAF has decided to deploy the weapon in more squadrons for optimal use," Antony said after inaugurating the digital flight control (DFC) computer facility at BEL here.

BEL chairman and managing director Ashwani Kumar Datt said that the first order was worth Rs.12.21 billion.

Designed and developed by the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Akash missile defence system is part of the country's integrated guided missile development programme.

"The missile can target an enemy aircraft up to 30 km away, at altitudes up to 18,000 meters and can be fired from both tracked and wheeled platforms," Datt told reporters on the margins of the function.

The missile is capable of carrying conventional as well as nuclear warheads with a payload of 60 kg.

On the occasion, BEL also handed over to the defence minister an advanced gun fire control system for the Indian Navy.

Why the hell is IAF taking so long in inducting new batches when they know that it has been one of the best in its category? Not only is the MOD slow, IAF and our military is equally RedTaped.

they are not slow, BEL just doesn't has required production capability.....thats why they are going to construct a new plant somewhere in the south which will primary manufacture Aakash....

Thanks for the answer man. But IAF has been exceptionally slow in inducting new stuff. That's evident in a lot of acquisitions.

there is nothing like a nuclear capable SAM.......SAM stands for surface to air missile....
Its funny to think abt cold war madness:

Actually in cold war US did made Nuke SAM to counter mass soviat bomber strike..

But for Akash its a modern medium range SAM with SA-6..

Akash is very similar to SA-2 guideline SAMS, But Akash radar is hard to detect and Jam and its mobile unlike SA-2..
