I am guessing this is curtains for Akash order. DRDO already failed to develop a LLQRM.
S,

The LLQRM requirement has nothing to do with the Akaash SAM. One is an Air Force requirement, the other, the QRSAM (the erstwhile joint collaboration between MBDA, France and Bh Dynamcs Limited) is an Army requirement.

Rafael is the Indian answer to the LLQRM. Akaash is the answer to the QRSAM.

As far as i understand the 3D CAR has longer range , it detects and tracks the targets and then transfers the control to the BLR which is best suited to tackle the Agressor. now this raises a couple of questions
1. What are the main differences between CAR and BLR except range of course?
2 . Can the BLR be Removed , giving the entire control to 3D CAR and hence reducing logistics?

India to deploy Akash missiles in North-East to deter China

NEW DELHI: India plans to progressively base six surface-to-air Akash missile squadrons in the North-East to counter the threat posed by Chinese

fighters, helicopters and drones in the region.

Sources say IAF will get eight Akash tactical air defence squadrons by 2015, with the first one becoming operational by 2011 itself, at a cost of over Rs 6,100 crore. Every squadron will have two `flights' of four Akash launchers each. Moreover, the Army is now poised to order two Akash regiments, with six firing batteries each, for around Rs 4,000 crore.

With an effective interception range of 25 km, the DRDO-developed Akash system with supersonic missiles and a network of radars is designed to neutralise multiple aerial targets attacking from several directions simultaneously in all-weather conditions. With an 88% "kill probability'', it can even take on sub-sonic cruise missiles.

The plan to base Akash squadrons in North-East constitutes yet another step to counter China's massive build-up of military infrastructure all along the unresolved 4,057-km Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Though it woke up quite late, India is now fastracking measures like raising of two new specialised infantry mountain divisions and an artillery brigade for Arunachal Pradesh and basing of two Sukhoi-30MKI squadrons (36 fighters) each at Tezpur and Chabua in Assam.

India is also looking to deploy the 3,500-km Agni-III and the under-development over 5,000-km Agni-V ballistic missiles as soon as possible. While Agni-III will be operationally ready by 2011-2012, the two new infantry divisions, with 1,260 officers and 35,011 soldiers, will be in place by 2012.

The government, of course, likes to downplay all this. Defence minister A K Antony on Monday said the two new divisions were part of the overall strategy to strengthen the armed forces.

"It's not directed at China or any country. The aim is to have an effective deterrent against any threat or eventuality,'' said Antony, after inaugurating DefExpo-2010, which has attracted a record 650 companies.

India is not "a war-mongering country'', nor does it covet "even an inch'' of any country's territory. "But we are ready to defend every inch of our territory... Our aim is to give the most modern equipment to our armed forces so that they can meet any challenge from any quarter at any time,'' said Antony.

Yes, there is the long-pending border dispute with China, but both New Delhi and Beijing are trying to "amicably resolve'' it through talks. Relations with China in other sectors like trade have dramatically improved, said Antony.

While this is certainly true, China is upgrading as many as 14 airfields in Tibet, of which at least half are now fully-operational. Its Linzi airbase, for instance, is not even 30 km away from the LAC in Arunachal.

With straight double-digit hikes in its defence budget for over 20 years, the 2.25-million strong People's Liberation Army has swiftly enhanced its transborder and `area-denial' military capabilities as well as bolstered its nuclear missile arsenal.

This Statement makes me chuckle

Has India or its leaders ever in their lives woken up early for anything under the sun ??

It seems like "though it woke up late" is the byline that defines India.

Just look at the privitization of defense story. Now the MOD is slowly backing off.
Even China which is communist has more private defense contractors than a democratic India......Hmmmm !!

Damn, thats expensive for such a short range system. You can pick up 1 Panstyr unit that can do the same job as a whole battery for a third the cost.

You know dude there is one side effect to being proactive, the side effect is that instead of defending we start attacking. Since our policy is of defense and not offense, spending less when we did not had enough money is not wrong. Yes we cannot say the same about delays etc.

I think now when we are becoming more modern nation, it will slowly reflect on armed forces and if for next few years there is no war, we lost nothing.

It is rather cheap. 6 Squadron worth ie 750 missiles for just $974M, with radar, mobile unit, blah blah blah

I never implied LLQRM has anything to do with Akash. DRDO failed to develop LLQRM, and only got Akash order due to benefaction of St. Anthony.

Cheap > Quality; since when did we become Burkina Faso ?
As I said before, thanks to Anthony DRDO has been able to get an order for this "heavy only in its weight" missile.

More like not calling it cutting edge. And yes midget's benefaction played a major role in its induction.

sorry sir. that is not true. Akash has enviable record of 9/9 hits in trials. not many can boast of that.

Theoretically, a “ripple” of two Akash missiles has a 99 per cent chance of shooting down a modern fighter aircraft. Practically, however, in 9 live Akash trials so far, all 9 missiles that were fired hit their targets. Videos of the firing trials, witnessed by Business Standard, show the Akash missiles smashing their targets into tiny fragments at ranges beyond 20 kilometres.
http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/army-warmsto-akash-missile/375634/

just because it is DRDO product does not mean it is not cutting edge!! it is also disrespect to indian scientists.

not for nothing the extra orders for Akash batteries came. it was based on pure performance. IAF ordered a small number inspite of its performance. now they have become familiar and confident with it.

even army which was not interested (no surprise here) has come around and ordering them. and you say benefaction!! can you define me what is - 'cutting edge' according to you.
