Aircraft carrier vessel at Vizag by 2016: Navy chief

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sureesh Mehta said an aircraft carrier vessel would be based at Visakhapatnam by the end of 2016.

Speaking at the Naval investiture ceremony at ENC on Saturday, the Chief of Naval Staff said the Indian Navy would acquire eight new surveillance aircraft soon.

The Indian Navy's growth would see a massive expansion into a 160-ship force with almost 300 aircraft by 2022 with satellite surveillance and net-centric operations to provide force multiplication.

He said the role of ENC has gained importance in the Indian Ocean. The command ships are now in Singapore for joint exercises, and soon they would participate in joint exercises in the China sea too. The new Naval Academy in Kerala would be set up by June this year, Sureesh Mehta said at a news conference later.

On the merger of Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), the Admiral said the Navy always preferred indigenous ships. There were three ship-building units in the country and they have a handful of orders with 38 ships in construction.

To a question, the Navy chief said 24 hours flight operation would be carried out at the airport if there were any demands. The Indian Navy was in the forefront of anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, which was much appreciated the world over.

Admiral Sureesh Mehta took the salute at an impressive parade comprising 24 platoons and gave away the President's Gallantry and Non-Gallantry Awards to 39 Naval personnel.

A good carrier based system is must for India. A five carrier navy would help India in power projection much beyond IOR with India going for nuke subs as well.

Yep, I'd say atleast 5 aircraft carriers are required so that atleast half of them would be at sea at all times...

We need one placed near the Strait of Hormuz, one near the Strait of Malacca so that we can monitor anybody who comes into our "area" and of course two to three extra so that we can project power elsewhere...

I would also suggest the requirement of better foreign policy to support logistics for long distance power projection.

Stationing assets in Hormuz and Mallaca is not going to be a problem as far as logistics are concerned. We have the Andsman base for Mallaca and we can use the Chhabar port for Hormuz

maintaining a 5 carrier fleet will take a lot of doing especially the support ships, attaining 5 carriers at the same time in service looks a far possibility especially when the indian navy has spelt out its policies for the future, it will be based on 3 ac,s i kiev class two intermediate carriers and multiple of destroyers and submarines.
power projection can be done with 3 acs too no need for 5 acs as in the event of war acs will be vulnerable targets and will need massive support .5 acs will hardly come into use in event of a conflict.
the IN is concentration more on subs as subs are easier to maintain and can strike deadly blows in event of conflict.so india is looking more at disel and nuclear subs with support and attack boats rather then acs and i think its the right policy.

Yes the IN has put up a requirement of two carriers. I was talking of what might be ideal for power projection beyond IOR.

We need to think much beyond the IOR... 3 might be enough for the IOR, but to have a visible symbol of power floating around the trouble spots of the world would definitely be a dream come true for me...

And, AFAIK we'll need 5 aircraft carriers to achieve that... Of course, goes without saying that we'll need more destroyer, frigate and nuclear sub escorts for the ships...

Well I'd like see India calling the shots in the future so we need to have a strong navy. Britain conquered the world because if it's navy. The US is doing it now. India should be up there with them a Big Power

if a 5 carrier fleet has to happen then that wont be for sure happening before 2025 and that too if the country feels the need for such type of power projection. india will struggle most part of the next decade to increase its combat aircraft squadron strength to the minmum requirement of 39.5 and if the present date costs are to be considered including infrastructure, fighter procurement, training of pilots, weapons suit, avionics etc per squadron would cost around 1.5b usd. at present india has some 5sqads of su30mki that would last post 2020 so that means an effective procurement of some 35 squads of different jets over the next 15-odd yrs which alone translates to some 53-60b usd and when calculated on yearly basis it comes to 3.5-4b usd/yr and now look at the present budget for procurment that india has. leave cost aside 5 carrier fleet is an over kill, certainly before 2025. cost will be big factor and looking at the huge task of modernising that is in front in the indian armed forces 5 carrier wuld be the last thing in the minds of the defence experts, babus and politicians alike.

Cost might not be a problem with Indian Economy sizing up to be the third largest.
What matters is the policy and vision of our leaders as to where they want India to be in 2025 and beyond

Do you have any updates on Far Eastern Naval Command, the wiki page of FENC doesn't help much, a well established FENC is really needed to project power in the Strait of Malacca, this is the latest article I have link

I suggest some one update the wiki page on FENC who have more knowledge about it.

Exactly my point... money ought not to be a problem... we just need vision and commitment... we can't afford to lie back and wait for the Chinese to take these places over due to our inaction... and, Chinese might well be planning to pip us in the region with the Gwadar port...

If we wait, or even waste an year on this path, we will be left behind...

India can ill afford a 5 carrier. An Overkill too.
Plus first India has to demonstrate an ability to deploy an effective and credible CBG.

Iranians will not allow Indian assets in Chabahar, at least not those fit with Israeli weapon systems. It will send a wrong message to Arabs, Israelis and Americans too.

India's economy will be 3rd largest by PPP not on absolute terms.

like many have already said 5 aircraft carriers is illogical. actually, im my opinion, quite frankly, stupid.

do you any idea the costs to maintain an aircraft carrier alone? Not only that, every second that an aircraft carrier leaves port, it needs to be surrounded by a battle group. this only effects the cost of operation even more.

if by some chance, god forbid, an aircraft carrier is destroyed, its a HUGEEE loss. Strategically yes, but more importantly, economically and emotionally.

for me, ideal carrier numbers would be 2-3. We do not need aircraft carriers to project power. 2 in operation all the time needed.

Good point...this is the same doctrine that the Soviet navy followed during the cold war minus the aircraft carriers and it still gave NATO nightmares. A good submarine fleet will go a longggg way in deterring an enemy.

Sir will take at least 3 decades away assuming sustained 7-9% growth. Japanese economy is 7 times bigger than ours and American 10 times in absolute terms, our PPP rating has been slashed from 5 to 3.5 affecting our GDP by PPP ranking. (Though if we factor in the underground economy/black money we are massive).
