India’s 4,000-km range nuclear weapons-capable strategic missile, Agni-IV was successfully test-fired from the Wheeler Island off Odisha coast on Monday.

The Army’s Strategic Forces Command, which is entrusted with the task of handling strategic weapons, launched the missile at 9.45 a.m. from a road-mobile launcher.

The missile which is designed to carry a one-tonne payload covered a range of more than 3,500 km on Monday, before splashing down in the Bay of Bengal. “Flight was successful and it met all the mission parameters”, A Defence Research and Development Organisation official told The Hindu.

All the radar stations, telemetry and electro-optical systems along the East Coast monitored the performance of the missile during the entire operation. After accelerating to a height of about 600 km, the re-entry vehicle with a dummy payload withstood scorching temperatures as it re-entered the atmosphere
and splashed down near the pre-designated area in the Bay of Bengal.

The two-stage solid-propelled, surface-to-surface ballistic missile is designed to carry a one-tonne payload to a distance of 4,000 km. Advanced ring laser gyro-based Inertial Navigation system and Micro Inertial Navigation System in redundant mode guided the missile to reach its pre-designated target area.

Top DRDO scientists and scientific adviser to Defence Minister G. Satheesh Reddy were also present the trial launch of the missile from Wheeler Island.

it's used for testing new tech
can be used as Anti Sat

it is a multi-purpose missile and one of the best technology demonstrator. I really appreciate the working style of Indian scientists when it comes to Missile development.

Nope! What's so sensitive about showing the trajectory on a computer screen? This must have been tracked by half a dozen countries from ground stations as well as the American Space Tracking and Surveillance System (STSS) spacecraft orbiting in LEO.

Everyone knows the time and location of launch as a NOTAM is issued to all countries before a launch to keep clear of the area.

While all eyes are on the last experimental test of long range nuclear tipped missile Agni-V by DRDO on Monday, the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the armed forces has planned a user trial of most advanced ballistic missile Agni-IV early next month. Defence sources said the 4,000-km range Agni-IV missile, which uses many cutting edge technologies to meet global standards, has been scheduled to be test-fired from Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast on January 2. “DRDO scientists are busy preparing for Agni-V test which will be launched from a hermitically sealed canister mounted on a Tatra launcher vehicle. Thereafter, the SFC personnel would make the Agni-IV ready to be fired from the same launching complex,’’ said an official. While induction of Agni-V, known as a game-changer, in the armed forces depends on the outcome of second test from a canister, successful test of Agni-IV missile would lead to its series of production from next year. “Besides, it would help in checking the readiness of armed forces to launch the missile on its own,’’ the official said. Though short in range compared to its elder sibling, Agni-IV incorporates many new technologies including navigation and propulsion. It weighs less compared to Agni-III which has a strike range of around 3,000-km. While Agni-III is about 46 tonnes, Agni-IV is only 17 tonne. The two-stage, 20-metre tall solid propelled missile can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads up to one tonne. It can be fired from both rail and road mobile launchers within minutes while the quick reaction timing of the weapon system gives it more flexibility and wide range of operational success. Of the six tests so far, the missile has achieved high accuracy five times barring the first test (launched as Agni-II prime) which ended up in a failure. A scientist said Agni-IV is designed to increase the kill efficiency along with a higher range of performance. ‘’The missile is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies that include indigenously developed ring laser gyro and composite rocket motor, which makes it different from other weapon systems in its class,’’ he said. DRDO is now planning to develop a shorter range variant of the Agni series having the capability to hit the target 500 km away. The new missile would incorporate the technologies that are used in Agni-IV.

There was also view that the range of Agni-IV was actually more capable of reaching all critical areas and that it is being deliberately short sold.

Trial of nuclear capable Agni-IV missile likely today

BHUBANESWAR: A user associate trial of nuclear capable Agni-IV missile is likely to be conducted from a defence base off Odisha coast on Monday. The missile would be test fired from the Abdul Kalam Island test facility.

Defence sources said the trial is aimed at revalidating new technologies incorporated in Agni-IV system and checking the readiness of armed forces to launch the missile on its own.

While the navigational warning (Navarea warning) has been issued for mariners for the scheduled test, the mission team is working meticulously to achieve success with high accuracy, sources said.

Though earlier it was apprehended that the test may be deferred due to logistic issues and late movement of tracking ships, from the issuance of navigational warning, it seems the issues have been sorted out.
Defence sources said the intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) would be fired in full operational configuration from a mobile launcher positioned in the launching complex-IV of the test facility.

This indigenously developed surface-to-surface nuclear capable missile is the most advanced long-range ballistic missile capable of being launched within minutes from a self-contained road mobile launcher.
Having a strike range of around 4,000 km, the two-stage solid propelled missile is 20 metre tall and weighs around 17 tonnes. Compared to the Pershing missile of the US in terms of technology, Agni-IV has many cutting-edge technologies which can meet global standards.

The missile can be fired from locations deeper in the Indian hinterland, making it very difficult for the enemy to track and destroy it. The missile also possesses a submarine launch capability.

This is sixth test of the missile and second user associate launch. On December 26, India had successfully launched its longest range Agni-V missile which drew attention of many nations including China.
