the biggest surprise in Peace Mission 2014 military drills should be the Appearance of New Gen HJ-10 Long range, optical-fibre guidance, NLOS, Multipurpose Missile with the Launcher
this new ATM system has been commissioned for years(about 3-5 years ) but It has been under development for decade...the first, most famous optical-fibre guidance Missile is European Polyphem (missile). As I know, China R&D team started the tracking study very early(Tracking the development of Polyphem Project)...at that time, the SPIKE NLOS was far away from its existence . HJ10 project was the result of this Tracking Study ...however, it seems that the final HJ-10 missile shares more similar feature with SPIKE NLOS, but HJ-10 is bigger and differences are there...
the missile itself appeared first in an TV interview with the Chief Designer of many China Anti-Tank Missile projects...the huge Optical lenses was first impressive feature of this new missile ...years later ,some Dimension and performance data was released.
Eg. the length is 2.5m , the Max Range is 10Km...
at the same time, the Launcher vehicle also was spotted . at least three prototypes were made..the vehicle is based on the ZBD04A chassis.( Improved ZBD04 IFV), it's a 25 tons class Universal chassis for many other weapon system
HJ10 has the ability to attack both the surface target and low speed Air target(Helis)...so we called it multipurpose missile system.
it was said it had two kinds of combat modes:
1. Fire and Forget mode--the target is locked on before the launch within the line of sight(the Photoelectric Sight on the Launcher) and range would be limited to 4-5 Kms.
2. NLOS mode--- the target would be locked on after launch by the operator...there are two Consoles on the Lauch Vehicle .the realtime image by the missiles CCD or Thermal imaging seeker and the man controlled Command are transmitted via the two-way optical-fibre...10 km might be the limit of optical-fibre guidance, or the fibre's weight(although the optical-fibre is light) and fibre broken rate might be the problem...
-------------------------
BTW, there was old project under the same Project code existed before. it was a millimetre-wave transmission command guided Heavy Anti-Tank missile...but the project ended decades ago.
