Afghan poll shows India most favoured, Pakistan unpopular

In a new opinion poll, Afghans have rated India as the most favourable foreign country in Afghanistan and have rejected a role for Pakistan in their country.
The opinion poll, commissioned by by BBC, ABC and German TV ARD, also shows a sharp decline in support for the Taliban.

According to the findings, 71 percent of more than 1,500 Afghans questioned endorsed India’s multifarious role in the reconstruction of the strife-torn country.

India was followed by Germany (59 percent), the US (51 percent), Iran (50 percent) and Britain (39 percent). Pakistan was found to be the least popular country, with only two percent of Afghans viewing its role favourably.

India has pledged $1.3 billion for a wide array of reconstruction activities ranging from education to building roads, bridges, power stations to digging tubewells, and grassroot development projects.

This broad sweep of developments projects has earned India enormous goodwill among ordinary Afghans.

The poll decisively rebuffs Pakistan’s oft-voiced propaganda pitch that India’s growing profile in Afghanistan was part of the problem, and not the solution.

The survey was conducted in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan between Dec 11-23, 2009. It’s based on in-person interviews with a random national sample of 1,534 Afghan adults during that period.

The results have a 3-point error margin. The field work has been done by the Afghan Center for Socio-Economic and Opinion Research (ACSOR) in Kabul.

The poll also found Afghans increasingly optimistic about the future of their country.

Months after the second Hamid Karzai government was formed in Kabul following a closely contested election, 70 percent said they believed Afghanistan was going in the right direction - a sharp increase from 40 percent a year ago.

The poll also brought to the fore the growing unpopularity of the Taliban in Afghanistan with only six percent of people polled saying they favoured a Taliban administration. Ninety percent said they wanted their country run by the current government.

This caught my eye. No matter how much Pakistanis want it to be their back yard and elusive strategic depth, they are hated from bottom of the hearts of Afghans. India should keep up its work relentlessly in developing Afghanistan along with other countries and bring it up to the par of any modern nation which can self-sustain.

===========Honestly I have great doubts about these western medias which are sometime misleading. As a quotation from "Yes minister" - "Where one stands depends on where one sits". In the long history India seems to have little influence in Afg whereas Pak has a strong ethnic ties and alliance with Taliban across border. Regret to cool our Indian friends a little bit.

Your logic falls flat. It's like saying a similar poll in India would see Pakistan as the most favorite country just because we have similar culture/language. Pakistan has been supporting terror groups to rip apart Afghanistan. As you yourself put it, it has a strong bond with the Taliban terrorists. So you expect the Afghan people to support their tormentors?

Are you saying that the Pakistanis are Taliban allies and ISAF enemies well then thanks!we've been saying that for years now.
anyways the afghan people have had pretty close relations with India for most of modern history, the Northern alliance was supported and armed by India among others, even the current President Hamid karzai studied in an Indian university and is a staunch Pro-India voter.Ther are four main power-broker tribes in Afghanistan the Uzbeks, the tajiks the Hazaras and the pashtuns .in these the previous three are all staunch pro-Indian parties even among the pashtuns India enjoys a fair amount of support among moderate and educated pashtuns ,then there are the radicalized pashtuns the ones the world calls the Taliban these i agree are pro-Pakistan.

friends, my observation about AFG may be wrong and your comments really set me thinking further. thanks, especially for BENGAL Raider's enlightment.

As for this ---perhaps only China still thinks Pakistan a favourable country...........and whole world doubts-why !!!!!!!!!! ---------------------------------------
Honestly, it's an exaggeration that 'WHOLE' world doubts why. I don't think really concerns the WHOLE world at all. It's anyway a small corner of the world.

PAK and China - from my point of view (u may not agree) are strategic friends with points like
1) it's PAK who played the role of bridge btwn CN and US during the cold war
2) CN help PAK when it was nearly dismantled by IND (breakaway of Bangladesh supported in IND)

A friend indeed is a friend in need.

Maybe u will say, hey, PAK was pro-Taliban (terrorists). I guess u also know that the US supported Taliban in their fight against Soviet Russia. That's an echo of 'the enemy's enemy is our friend' in marriage of convenience. It also recalls me of INd's former PM Ghandi (the lady whose name I failed to remember) was supportive of Soviet invasion of AFG.

Honestly I may not like what's going on in my neighbor's house, but our Chinese belief is to "mind our own business".

[mod] You have been previously told to follow the forum rules, and I think you have forgot to do that, never use SMS type languages and too many dots between the sentences , and if you forget the name of our Hon'ble Former PM, there is no need to write her name in wrong spelling, that is another way of disrespecting her which is not allowed here, continuation of doing this may invite suitable action

Indira Gandhi was not the leader during Russia's invasion of Afghanistan
Pakistan helped bring wars to Afghanistan so in both Afghan wars Pakistan played a instigator role.
China was the evil commie during the cold war how did Pakistan help to bridge this gap?
Bangladesh became an Independent country how did China help Pakistan to stop this?

such polls are meaningless, India will continue to help Astan even if we are hated and Pak will continue to play spoilsport even if its loved.

Guess u should do more independent reading and thinking rather than be blinded by 'ideology'. This world is consisting of different systems, different beliefs.... PAK and CN in spite of different social systems came together for 'mutual interest'.

Aren't u 'too simple, sometime naive'???

Give u an Indian link--------------------------------------------

quote---
It was in December 1979 that Soviet tanks rolled into Kabul. In power in New Delhi was a minority government headed by Chaudhury Charan Singh. It was a regime based on ambition and opportunism - among the few items to its credit (it may be the only one) was that it made some noises of protest at the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. However, that government was already on its last legs, and when fresh elections were held in January 1980, the Congress came back to power. Indira Gandhi was once more prime minister, and she quickly endorsed the Soviet action. The influential pro-Soviet journalist, Nikhil Chakravarty, visited Kabul and wrote a series of effusive reports on how the new regime was dismantling feudalism and building a socialist utopia.

After Indira Gandhi's death, her support of the Soviet-backed regime in Kabul was endorsed by her son and successor as prime minister, Rajiv. Meanwhile, a resistance movement was taking shape among the Afghans. The insurgency had various strands, these differentiated by ethnicity - Pathan, Uzbek, Tajik - and by ideology - secular nationalist, Islamic jihadist, warlordist. It was funded principally by the United States of America, whose agent on the ground was Zia-ul-Haq's government in neighbouring Pakistan.

The fact that Pakistan had fought three wars against India and that the US had not been an especial friend of India provided a sort of retrospective validation to Indira and Rajiv Gandhi for their support of the Soviet invasion. But that support certainly ran counter to the traditions of the Indian national movement. For the Soviets in Afghanistan were, like the British in India or the French in Algeria, colonialists who had forced their rule on an unwilling populace. And despite the divergences within the resistance movement, it was clear that a vast majority of Afghans regarded the Soviets as usurpers and conquerors. And yet the 'anti-colonial' Indian government took the side of the alien rulers.

It is instructive to recall the Indian position on Afghanistan in the Eighties at this moment, when the Indian position on Myanmar (Burma) has come under searching scrutiny. In these columns, Sanjib Baruah has rightly criticised the false rhetoric of realpolitik that has been used to justify our support for the generals in Yangon. Let's not rush to endorse the democracy movement, say the amoral pundits in Delhi, for then the junta will go over wholesale to the side of the Chinese. Moreover, we need their gas, their timber, and their jewels. Back in the Eighties, these same pundits supported the government in Kabul on the grounds that our friends' the Soviets were behind it, while our 鈥榚nemies' the Pakistanis were against it.
-----------unquote----------

Sometimes u need to think from India's 'INTEREST' instead of from 'IDEOLOGY' or "the US's interest".

And don't use over-simplified tags like 'evil commie' before u have real knowledge about it.

No surprises in either India being the most liked or Pakistan being the most disliked. Whether people doubt the poll or not, it is a fact. All Pakistan has been doing in Astan is destablise it and use it as its backyard. India on the other hand has always looked at developing people to people relations, economic relations and help Astan build a modern country from the ruins of wars. That many of Astans citizens who also happen to be leading that country have been educated in India and their Army recieving training in Indian institutes is testament to that fact.
While even the US and NATO are still fighting there, India is spending its money to develop infrastructure for Astan. Sending in doctors etc. All that Pakistan is doing is sending more Taliban to make sure that the fragile democracy and peace that has come to that country is disrupted.

Pakistan will continue to create its nefarious designs on Afghanistan since they need the Taliban there to assert its influence on that country and use it for its own evil purposes, but India will never stoop so low ! We believe that rather than sending troops, its the humanitarian efforts being made the Indian government in Afghanistan that is going to have the greatest positive impact on its ordinary and innocent citizens, and needless to say as this poll shows, they have already started bearing fruits of our labor . The land of Gandhi and Shivaji is going to give up on the needy Afghan people so easily !!

What evil designs did Pakistan have when they let Osama Bin Laden set up his base there and result in 9/11?? If the Indians really supported Russia during the Invasion they could have and maybe should have sent troops then the Russians definetly would have won.

Who has destroyed AFG? Wasn't it PAK Govt., ISI etc who installed Taliban in Kabul, so that they can secure western front and make AFG its testing ground for new breed of covert operations especially against India (IC-814, relocation of pakistani terror camps etc). When US waged " War on Terror" Pakistan happily sided with Cash strapped Americans and joined the Party, as they had two options Join us or Join them! Do you think any sane Afghan will ever forget that?

Our efforts are Sincere and Friendly, your problem is strategic and of insecurity in Afghanistan!
