Is new redome 0.5 m longer than the redome of MK1? It was proposed to change the design to make the plane more aerodynamical.
I heard that the need for a new radome was because the old one was incompatible with the radar. Nothing to do with aerodynamics.

Stealthier MK2 is ok, but should not be at the cost of maneuverability.
Also I might suggest targeting pod internal and just below the nose
We should follow the Russian foot steps they adopted in PAKFA. They made it using Sukhoi series as the base and added stealth to it. No maneuverability was compromised much. Whatever the maneuverability was compromised was made up by more powerful engine.

Yes , That reason is known to every one. Beside that, Aerodynamic consideration was there. New design (0.5 m longer) was proposed for better aerodynamics.

I heard that the need for a new radome was because the old one was incompatible with the radar. Nothing to do with aerodynamics.

LCA concept was a fighter. I think precision attack capability is an afterthought and is adding to the confusion.

If lca can carry bvr and wvr air to air missiles and has good dogfight characteristics then it is adequate. Self protection is the only issue that is inbuilt jamming ability. If it can drop dumb bombs, or laser guided with external laser targeting pod, it is sufficient.

Has GE delivered the GE414 engine? And if yes has the construction of LCA Mk2 started and if not then it is better to scrap the entire project since it will take 10 years to complete the project itself and what will India do with a 4th generation fighter when world will be dominated by 5th gen fighters and moving towards 6th gen technologies. It will be like India producing 3rd gen Jaguars now when world is producing 4++ gen fighters and moving towards 5th gen ones. :frusty::frusty::frusty:

Such puny amount for a world class fighter jet production facility, I am expecting 16 per year from 2017..

The expenditure of $187 mn will be funded by HAL (50%), Indian Air Force (25%) and the Indian Navy (25%). The timeline for this will be 36 months from the date of sanction.

Full scale production of India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas is expected to begin next year.

IAF chief to take maiden flight in Tejas

File Photo: IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha
New Delhi: IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha will tomorrow take his maiden flight in India's indigenous light combat aircraft, Tejas, and review the development so far. Raha will also inaugurate the LCA paint hangar in Bengaluru and visit the production line of the aircraft. The IAF has given an order of 120 Tejas, with 100 of them being an upgraded version. He will fly a sortie in a Tejas trainer aircraft which is a two seater, defence sources said. He will also visit the hangar where the Mirage 2000 is being upgraded.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), manufacturer of Tejas, is likely to hand over the fourth aircraft to IAF by June end. The four aircraft will make up for the first squadron of IAF which will be used for training and familarisation. Rather than waiting for LAC Mk II, IAF had decided to go in with an upgraded version of the existing Tejas with over 40 modifications. IAF currently plans to acquire 120 Tejas aircraft, with 100 of these having major modifications. The force wants Active Electrically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar, Unified Electronic Warfare (EW) Suite, mid-air refueling capacity and beyond the vision range missiles.
As per the production plan, six aircraft will be made this year (2015-16) and HAL will subsequently scale it up to eight and 16 aircraft per year. Upgraded version of Tejas will cost between Rs 275 crore and Rs 300 crore. Tejas, which was several years in the making, has now caught the attention of foreign buyers, with Sri Lanka and Egypt evincing interest in the fighter jet. Sri Lanka had recently rejected Pakistan's JF-17 aircraft built with Chinese help, while Egypt had last year signed a contract for 24 French-made Rafale fighter jets. The two countries are interested in the current version of Tejas and not theupgraded one which will be rolled out later.

You don't seem to have much info

About how many planed how many handed over when the rest will be handed over

You don't seem to have any info on one hand

But on the other hand you seem to have many expert info to make a comment that HAL does not look good delivery wise

Can you share on what basis you made this comment ?

There is a difference between what is expected from HAL and what HAL provides .
Given the history they have never been on time.

Lets say 6 were to be delivered in 2015-16 ramped to 8 for next year 14 and so on.
but they have missed the deadlines setup by them only on various occasions .

yes I am not having much information as I was preoccupied with something for last two months and did not have enough time to learn all about it.

If you think we stating that HAL is never on time please share the details you have in regard to the delivery of LCA and we will see if they live upto it or not.

Elta Systems will supply the radar for all future versions of India's Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA), after the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) subsidiary was selected by Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL).

The company's ELM-2032 fire-control radar is installed on prototypes of the Indian-developed fighter, and deliveries will continue as series production starts. According to Elta, it also has been chosen as sole supplier for additional future versions of the Tejas; Israeli sources suggest this could involve using its active electronically scanned array ELM-2052 sensor. They suggest that strong ties between HAL and IAI could see additional Israeli equipment installed on the fighter.

India's air force has announced plans to order 80 more LCA in an improved Mk1A configuration, following an earlier order for 40 Tejas jets.

Meanwhile LRDE's Uttam specs displayed at Defexpo were 150km (up from the original 100km).

Problem is availability of internal space, which is very minimal on LCA.

Already there is speculation that even the Mk-2 might have to carry an external IRST pod because very little space is available in the nose/cockpit area. If an internal IRST is possible, it must be a very compact one. Like the Skyward system.

Don't see where the space for an EO pod can be created there. Not happening.
Does PAKFA have electronics warfare Pods, or the Electronic Jammer is Internally installed. Well they don't need any, why because the Radars act as a electronic Jammer/countermeasures/warfare. With the technology, the electronics are getting smaller, and somehow, I believe ADA will find the space to mount it internally.

For IRST, why not Skyward IRST off the shelf.

The use of dedicated jammers is not going anywhere in the foreseeable future. The Raytheon NGJ is an example. Radars are inherently narrowband which means they cannot conduct blanket-jamming of the entire frequency range. SPJs can do wideband jamming against radars of all wavelengths & bands.

Plus, the radar can only jam something that's within it's FoV.

For IRST, why not Skyward IRST off the shelf.
If they can find the space for it, go right ahead. Problem is that unlike Tejas Mk-1/Mk-1A, the Mk-2 will have a retractable refueling probe, which means they have to find space to accommodate the probe in the nose. If they still have space remaining for an IRST, it's all for that good.

As I said, the Skyward is a relatively compact system and is an excellent option in this case.

How India can build Next Gen Tejas MK-II on lines of Gripen E

May 30, 2016 by technologybuzz Leave a Comment

SOURCE: VISHAL KARPE / FOR MY TAKE / IDRW.ORG

Swedish Aerospace giant Saab recently rolled out Next Generation Gripen E Smart fighter jets in its factory in Linkoping which was attended by close to 500 people . It will be foolish to say that Gripen E is just another upgraded variant since the aircraft not only has greater fuel carrying capacity but also has 20 percent more thrust, comes with more pylons, in-flight refuelling capability and increased take-off weight.

In short it’s a quantum jump in Airpower technology when compared to its older variant and can serve has 4.5 ++ Generation Point Air defence fighter jets in the light category of fighter jets and one of the best alternative to cheap 4.5++ Generation aircraft when compared to other Western fighter jets leaving a side Russian and Chinese offers .

India’s very own indigenous LCA-Tejas program will see a development of Tejas Mk-1A variant which is a stopgap measurement initiated by Government of India and India Air Force to meet immediate needs of the air force and will fall in between Tejas MK1 and Tejas MK-II . The fate of Airforce version of Tejas MK-II is yet to be made clear but has now Indian Navy plans to continue development of LCA Navy MK-II based on new stretched airframe powered by new GE-F414IN engines developing more thrust while IAF will take a call on the MK-2 program at a later stage .

Development of Gripen E by SAAB should encourage Indian Agencies to adopt similar path in developing Tejas / LCA MK-2 to make Next Generation of smart fighter which can replace nearly 300 Light class of aircraft which Indian Air Force will need to replace its retiring Mig-21 and Mig-27 fighter jets from its fleet .

Gripen E vs LCA- Tejas MK-II

For long Gripen vs LCA-Tejas comparison debate has been waged online by supporters of the both the fighter jets but further here we will continue to explore technology which SAAB was able to integrate into their latest Gripen variant and how India can take clues from them in developing LCA- Tejas MK-II.

Avionics

AESA FCR

Open Architecture of Avionics is what India will continue to adopt in MK-2 variant like we have seen in Gripen E . AESA Fire Control radar is what both Aircraft will have onboard While Gripen E will have come with Selex ES-05 Raven AESA Radar which will deliver enhanced detection performance in air-to-air and air-to-ground modes, plus a synthetic aperture radar mapping function.

Tejas MK-2 likely will be powered by Indigenously developed Uttam AESAR FCR AESA or might carrying on using ELTA developed EL/M-2052 which HAL plans to use on Tejas MK-1A which has a longer detection range, high mission reliability and a multi-target tracking capability of up to 64 targets.

IRST

Gripen E will also feature infra-red search and track (IRST) system to track and detect objects which give off infrared radiation . IRST has not been planned for MK-2 .

Unified EW System.

Both Gripen E and MK-2 will boost of unified electronic warfare (EW) suite and a radar warning receiver (RWR). Tejas MK-1A will see the use of EW Suite integrated into a Pod to be carried externally on a pylon , Gripen E and MK-2 will have EW Suite integrated into its airframe .

Engines

MK-2 will be powered by American General Electric developed F414-GE-INS6 delivering 98kN of thrust while Gripen E is powered by American General Electric developed F414-GE-39E delivering 98kN of thrust . Both Engines specification wise on paper are same but incorporate some hardware and material changes as requested by users and customised according to requirements laid out by SAAB and DRDO/HAL .

In-flight refuelling probe

Both aircraft will feature In-flight Retractable refuelling probe which will further enhance its range and both aircraft will also have higher internal fuel carrying capacity .

Weapons

Gripen E comes with landing gears which are placed further away from its main Fuselage and close to its wings allowing it to have 10 Pylon station which in turn allows it to carry more weapons in a single sortie , use of Missile Eject Launcher pylons underbelly of Gripen E allows it to position additional Pylon stations . MK-2 will have 8 Pylon stations like it was in MK-1 Airframe and might not see radical changes in landing gear positions in MK-2 airframe to accommodate additional Pylon stations as seen on Gripen E .

Conclusion : India should fast track development of Tejas MK-2 since IAF will need 250 + aircraft from light class category and homegrown LCA-Tejas should be the only aircraft India should procure in this class while it can learn from SAAB how to develop MK-2 variant .

Saab keen to partner with India for next version of Tejas

Saab is in talks with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to finalise the latest avionics and radar system for the Tejas 1A, the version of the indigenous plane that the IAF is interested in.
NEW DELHI: Swedish defence major Saab is keen to partner with India for the next version of LCA Tejas even as it has offered its own newly-launched Gripen E fighter aircraft under 'Make in India' initiative, but with over 49 per cent stake in a joint venture with a private firm.
Based on a Request for Information released by state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the makers of Tejas, Saab is in talks with them to finalise the latest avionics and radar system for the Tejas 1A, the version of the indigenous plane that the IAF is interested in.
"Yes, we are in talks with HAL. We have the latest avionics, best active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar and technology in the Gripen which we would be happy to share with HAL for the Tejas programme," Jan Widerstrom, Chairman Saab India, said.
He argued that it will be a win-win situation if the Indian Air Force (IAF) decides to get Gripen also.
"From a user perspective, maintenance, knowledge build up and Make in India, this will have lot of advantages," he said.
Asked if the offer to help the Tejas programme was conditional to IAF selecting Gripen, he said both are independent programmes.
He also made it clear that Saab is looking at more than the automatic limit of 49 per cent FDI in defence in the joint venture that will make Gripen in India.
Under the rules, a company can seek even 100 per cent FDI if it brings in high-technology under the 'Make in India' initiative.
Even though India has scrapped the earlier multi-billion contract for 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) programme and decided to go in for only 36 Rafales, the government will select at least one more aircraft besides Tejas to be built in India.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has said that India will decide between American F-18, French Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon and Gripen by the end of this fiscal.
Incidentally, IAF chief Air Chief MarshalArup Raha visited the Saab facility in Sweden last week and even flew the Gripen.
"Our concept of technology transfer is real as we are willing to give India comprehensive systems and software control. In short, Saab is not only looking at setting up a base here but also helping in the development of aerospace capability for many more years to come," Widerstrom said.
He added that Saab will not simply move an assembly line but will build development capability.
"We will design, develop, produce and maintain in India," he said.
