Weight reduction studies have already been carried out. Mk-1A will see a reduction in empty weight by 200-400 kgs. It was long confirmed by LCA-Tejas FB admin
I have heard that before but there is no official statement either from HAL or IAF. Plus a weight reduction of as small as 5-10 kg will require flight testing and approval from flying centres. Hence, there is no weight reduction in MK1A, it is simply FOC with AESA and EW suite, nothing new in it.

If there is anything new in MK1A then expect delay in testing and approval. 2022 for MK1A will be missed very easily and expect HAL crying in front of GoI to approve extra MK1 FOC so that production facility runs.

Sir.... Weight will change even with aesa...so by that standard, retesting is inevitable. If that has to happen, they rather make changes properly. I think this may have been factored in.

you are right there is no confirmation but they are doing their work ,we were in doubt whether mk2 will be there or not but finally it happened..... multiple sources confirmed about weight reduction...Tejas lca FB page admin(you can believe) ..also other sources....

air Force is committed for 201 Tejas mk2
..it's 10 squardon.....I think.....then one extra or
Tejas mk2 squardon will have ..less planes ...then will we add trainers. too
@Steven Rogers @AMCA @Rahul Singh
What I'm seeing is 324 LCA Tejas, ie bw 18-16 squadron(if aircrafts are kept 18-20 per squadron), a big boost in capabilities and nos.

The only thing that worries me right now, is the low production rate of HAL. I sincerely hope madame Raksha Mantri lights a fire underneath their asses and forces a jump to 12-16 aircraft annually. One squadron a year isn't good enough either, we need to make 2 squadrons a year and produce all Tejas aircraft in 9-10 years max.

What will they produce? They hav only 20 IOC and 20 FOC tejas orders .They will drag this 20 ioc orders till they get FOC. Then only they will start another 20 foc tejas production.

For those all who are jumping for private partnership in Tejas has missed out on one very important aspect of it. Currently, fuselage and many sub components of Tejas are supplied by Pvt entities. It is on record that they too are unable to provide them on schedule. HAL on their own is just running an assembly line. They are not into direct manufacturing.

So unless and until there is a solid order from customer, Pvt players are not going to invest a lot and the flow of parts would be paltry in numbers. So blaming HAL for production rate is not a sane thing to do. On its part HAL is doing what it could do. It is pushing for numbers from IAF to ramp up the production and its assembly line.

In terms of volume that extra 1 meter does not mean equally larger volume. Tejas is chubbier in the centre while Gripen is as slim as a pencil.

The naval variant of Tejas MK-2 is not that shorter than Gripen E either. It is short by only 0.644 m but has a larger wingspan by 0.3 m. And there is no logical reason for not using this model for IAF as well. Considering the advantage in capability in terms of fuel capacity, combat load and aerodynamic efficiency that Naval MK-2 model has over IAF MK-2 model.

looking to the dry thrust of the engine, MTOW should be 16000 kg and not 17000 KG. Now imagine if we make Tejas Mk2 6100 kg as promised with 3500 KG fuel, Mk2 shall offer us a 6+ ton external payload and in worst case scenario, it should be 5 Ton+. Mk2 shall have a great T/W ration uncomparable by Gripen E or F16, forget about those Chinese junk fighters.

Engine is not the issue, since we have GE404 and 414 options anyway. But the airframe modifications to fix the aerodynamic problems and the internal changes to fit new avionics in, will require most of the time.
That still doesn't deal with the lack of hardpoints, but at least would make Tejas compliant to a decade old ASR and useful enough for the interceptor role it was meant for.

Ideally we fit the 414 engine, integrate EW including MAWS and add CFTs, to add fuel and free weapon stations. That and the MK1A changes would make it a decent 4.5th gen fighter with potential for exports.
Aerodynamic Improvements are already planned in MK1A.

Ghanta aerodynamic improvement !! This is not Alto or Maruti 800 where they'll bring some new engine or body parts & customer will accept it. If MK1A has aerodynamic improvement/problems then IAF will go for approval cycle before inducting them and that will take another 2-3 years 'AT MINIMUM'.

As I have already said MK1A has no weight reduction, may be they'll make some space for extra fuel if they put some lighter part on the plane or improve their modular structure, but that'll hardly give them 20-25 kg reduction and that weight has to be compensated with fuel to keep the aerodynamic performance unchanged. If they could achieve this then MK1A will be allowed to be inducted after 1st flight may be around 2022-23, otherwise expect another failure of policy makers.

MK1A's sole objective is to fill the gap of depleting squadron till MK2 arrives. Expect least changes in MK1A.

As per some reports, aerodynamics have been changed to 7 percent of original.

I have heard that 2 years back that HAL has proposed 200 kg weight reduction in MK1A, not claimed by HAL though:)biggrin2:). FB page admin is not 100% reliable source, you can ask them some non-technical questions though. But I don't trust them for technical stuffs, they are PR team after all.

There was no doubt that MK2 won't happen, it was just about time and commitment of govt. MoD has just given a statement and I haven't seen any fund released for TD development yet. But I know that ADA is sincerely working on MK2 from last 5-6 years, so the only problem which I can derive is that the GoI, whether UPA2 or NDA, is not releasing any fund for initial prototype development of MK2, I don't know the exact reason for that yet.

And don't even talk about AMCA prototype.

Tejas Mk-II was sanctioned in November 2009 at a cost of Rs.2431.55 Crore with Probable Date of Completion (PDC) of December 2018. However, because of delay in finalisation of Engine Contract, the project could start only in December 2013. As a result, maiden flight of first Prototype and Operational Clearance are likely to be completed by December 2019 and December 2022, respectively. There after induction.

You should have asked me for reference before you expose your limited knowledge with super confidence.

Here is a paper on Aerodynamic improvement of Tejas by CEMILAC team for performance improvement by aerodynamic improvements. This is not the only paper but there is an another paper published just 2 years back which says that drag in Tejas can be reduced by 8% which will result in 20% increase in transsonic improvement and 2% rise in highest speed. It will also facilitate 60 kg higher fuel.

https://drdo.gov.in/drdo/pub/dss/2009/main/2-CEMILAC.pdf

I am unable to locate that other paper but If i find it, I will certainly post it here for your reference. one of leading scientist of ADA has also said that they were going to focus on aerodynamic improvement then onward.
