LM-KAI T-50 and Boing-SAAB T-X both use the GE-404. So, I won't call it overpowered.

HAL/BAE will do the job for AFG wrt Taliban.... it won't stretch PAK, AFG having something to shoot down JF-17's.... it will also force PAK AF to split F-16's to both East & West this will put pressure on PAK to behave and will give us the strategic depth which they wanted...

AFG can't maintain any jet plane so it's will be another headache.
So Hawk with beyond visual range missiles like astra will keep them busy and SAM's will keep pakis out.

****Personally, I don't prefer selling Tejas-T to USAF. As it is almost certain in such case we will have to buy F-16 which will ultimately kill Tejas. Not smart!

However, taking part in T-X program is an opportunity to show to the world our progress. It will definitely result in orders from other countries. Most possibly from 'Sand-Bag' air forces. So we must take part. But don't sell it if we have to buy F-16s.

In case we have to export, we need to bring in private sector to set new production lines and increase production. We need to first take care of our home needs thereafter think of exporting. IAF should give more orders so that HAL/private sector can increase the production. By the time the MK2 is ready, these extra LCA ordered by IAF can be exported.

This will prompt India to increase the production base and as soon as MK2 is ready, we have experienced private sector as well to make MK2 at a faster pace.

It has been the story so. Allocate a large sum then keep it unutilised. Later returning it to finance ministry which used to add it to upcoming figure to show a significant increase in the budget allocations. All for the PR consumption.

This is possibly the first time that they are allocating a sum which is most likely to be used up in a fiscal year. Any defence deal, in any case, takes much more than 1 year. So it's smart to predict the spending and allocated only that much.

Before comparing defence budget with others in % to gdp keep these things in mind.
How much is our tax to gdp ratio.
And defence budget is 16-17% of central budget.

At last don't forget we have huge deficit.

The 1.56 percent does not include defense pensions. All nations include pensions in defense budget, but India excludes it. Taking it into account.. the defence budget for 2018 - 2019 is 2.16 percent of gdp.(4.03 trillion rupees ). Defense pensions have increased greatly due to OROP

On the second thought can they fly those planes means do they have pilots and maintenance will fall on us and spares too.

Right now US is buying Super Tucano for AAF. In future we might also be giving them some combat aircrafts. How aircrafts in Tejas category will require ground support and a lot of Training. Which I have no doubt will be done in future. However it is still sometime away.

First of all its important to make sure that Afghan Deal bends in our favour. So lets invest money in creation of assets first.

Yeah 11 seems unlikely now. But still 9-10 are possible for FY18. SP-5 is the first planes from 2nd line & hence the long wait. Aside from this small hiccup production is being ramped up at good enough speed.
