i guess everyone by now is tired of waiting for LSP 5 to take off. Its already late by 2 months. Other kites are reportedly undergoing High AoA flights somewhere close to an unnamed naval base. wish they would provide some info on the outcome. another interesting fact or rather not so encouraging news is that,of the total number of 1441 flights by LCA LSP planes have flown less than 21%(less than 300 flights). bulk of the flight testing has been on TD and PVs. between sept 18 2010 and 21 sept 2010 Tejas has flown 12 times- the highests ever sorties till date in that span of time.

THIS IS HUGE: GE F414 Engine Lowest Bidder To Power Tejas MK-II

Huge news, and it's official. The DRDO/ADA announced earlier today in a statement that the GE F414 engine has been identified as the lowest bidder in the race against the Eurojet EJ200, to power the LCA Tejas Mk-II. This turns things completely around. In recent weeks, there had been a spate of source-based reports suggesting that the EJ200 had the more competitive tender, though there had been no confirmation.

But now, a formal statement from DRDO! Here it is in full:

The Price Negotiating Committee for the Alternate Engine for LCA Mk-2 has finalised the Comparative Statement of Tenders. The committee had its representations from Ministry of Defence, Defence Finance, ADA, DRDO, HAL, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy. After evaluation and acceptance of the Technical offer provided by both Eurojet and GE Aviation, the commercial quotes were compared in detail and GE Aviation was declared as the lowest bidder. Further price negotiations and contract finalization will follow.

This is huge. The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) says it will now proceed with price negotiations with GE for the engine. MMRCA implications shouting loud: dust for Eurofighter. Massive boost for the F/A-18 and Gripen IN! Stay tuned for details.

Either of the following two things happened.

1) Ajai Shukla fu$Ked up when he prematurely carried the report that Eurofighter was the lowest bidder

or 2)US has played some massive politics to get GE F414 engine selected for LCA despite Eurofighter is lowest bidder.

We don't know which one is true but in the following days we will have corroboration for one of the above points.

This also means now MRCA will go to either of the USA company and will be a nice gift to obama on his india visit by GOI.

DD how could there have been any politics in the bidding? I was really really surprised when the news emerged some time back saying the EJ was cheaper by near $2mils, and a lot was discussed over unconfirmed reports. Makes all of us look like fools doesnt it esp those who floated all kinds of theories and stories.

It's GE F-414 for LCA Mk-II; EJ-200 loses the race in photo finish

GE F-414 has been selected for Tejas Mk-II leaving behind EJ-200. This is contrary to media reports. Stay tuned for more.

Only one advantage in this selection is no structural modification is needed for LCA MK II to fit engine.

Not sure mate, but we will know in future if any politics has been played. What is puzzling is that why GoI is going for an American engine which has high probability of getting sanctioned and very less transfer of technology. That makes me wonder that US might have arm twisted GoI to go for GE engine despite Eurojet willing to transfer technology at much higher level than GE and actually making India Eurojet manufacturing hub.

even if it is a political decision i really dont mind till the time we have negotiated well from our end and got what we wanted, and that necessarily need not be in form of some more military equipment. anything that directly helps us in one form or the other is good as per me and politics is all about that, by the way that anti-outsourcing bill got a beating after a lot of lobbing by the indians, who knows what was on offer and what got negotiated. all that matters is that we are gaining and if that is happening its all good.

DD, may be the govt feels that Indo US relations are now far ahead than it were before and less prone to sanction. Money matters ultimately for the US and they know they have billions to make in India in each and every field and not just in defence. The US will be neck deep in its investments in India including the nuke power plants. It will not be able to afford any loss there.

Also its possible that India in partnership with snecma will get the kaveri working and then have a kaveri MkII with the single crystal blade tech. We may be just bothered about getting a working engine which is cheap and good enough for a limited number of LCA?

Yusuf,

Ajai Shukla (himself an army man) is known to have good sources within armed forces and MoD and he has very good reporting capabilities and most of his previous reports were true. He has reported 10 days ago about the LCA engine bidding with Eurojet being cheaper and he has actually given the exact figures of the bidding. He also expressed that US might pressurize India to choose GE 414 as LCA engine because this has also implications for MRCA bidding. And the pressure has turned out to be true. Here is an excerpt of his article.

Europe has an edge over the US in the tightly-fought contest to sell India a next-generation engine for the homegrown Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA). Informed sources have told Business Standard that when the bids were opened last week, European consortium Eurojet bid $666 million for 99 EJ200 engines, against US rival General Electric, which quoted $822 million.

Both engines had been earlier adjudged technically suitable to power the Tejas Mark-II. Therefore, according to the ministry of defence's procurement rules, the vendor offering the lower price is to be handed the contract.

But the champagne corks aren't popping yet at Eurojet. Both engine-makers have been asked for certain clarifications by Wednesday, and senior Eurojet executives are worried that Washington could pressure New Delhi to opt for the US engine in the interregnum.

Eurojet pips GE in LCA engine bid

Livefist - The Best of Indian Defence: Eurojet Reacts To Defeat, Says Decision Means Tejas Won't Get Best Engine

Eurojet Gmbh has accepted defeat in the Tejas Mk-II engine competition. Just received this statement from the company:

"We respect the decision taken by the Price Negotiating Committee. However, we regret that the Committee has decided against the most capable & latest generation engine on offer for the LCA-Tejas. Together with our consortium partner companies and their respective governments we will carefully study the decision and its implications. We expect further details from Indian authorities and more information about the process leading to the announced selection. This decision does not affect our strong commitment to India. We will continue to explore true and trusted partnerships here which will support the development of a strong Indian aerospace and defence industry."

I feel like pi$$ed off. GoI proved they are in bed with the Boeing. Recent increased orders for the p-8i then this really bad for indian industry. GoI has gone really dumb, US Congress denied permission to the LM as well as for the Boeing to work with the naval tejas. Now we wont make any progress in the indigenous industry for defence and unkil is throwing all the biscuits he have. We have left a golden opportunity offered by the Europeans. I have smelled something when NATO commander opened his mouth, but i believed in the india is independent in decision making. I think soon we will be another client state like Japs, RoK to the unkil. Good luck

Where Yusuf Ji? BTW I did read the full article but i did not find anything except "We respect the decision taken by the Price Negotiating Committee". And this sentence doesn't clear anything. I mean, what was taken into consideration per unit cost, life cycle cost, both as indivisible or both in aggregate and with what difference in all case?
