India selects Saab for Tejas fighter radar

India has chosen Saab to provide the active electronically scanned array radar for its Tejas Mk 1A fighter.

"The AESA fighter radar is developed by Saab with antenna technology based on the latest technologies using Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicone Carbide (SiC) substrates in combination with the latest generation of exciter/receiver and processor technology, giving optimum installed performance in a dense signal environment," according to a company news release.

In addition, Saab will provide an electronic warfare suite for the Tejas. "The heart of the suite is an electronic warfare receiver which is connected to a front end receiver and fin tip antennas inside the aircraft," Saab said.

Will the warfare suite free the hard point wherein a EW pod was fitted?

Tejas is considered as a front-line fighter for this very purpose IAF want its compatibility with available missiles and future, for example its the only aircraft in IAF which is capable of using R-73, Python & Astra, Debry and in near future MBDA`s ASRAAM, Spice and other LGB so does Indian glide bomb, In War it must able to use whatever available in inventory ..

Whatever suits we get from outsiders, It should be well equipped to all front-line fighters, Tejas is indeed a priority along Indian made MKIs ..

Good to see tejas getting quality weapons and sensors.......

I ain't buying this, unless the news comes officially from MOD or reputed blogs like Jane's, LiveFist etc. Personally, I would like to see a JV in this for our scientists to gain research on materials for AESA radar construction like GaN, if I recall ours is made up of GaAr (I could be wrong though). Make a few batches than, deploy that tech to our homegrown Uttam.

Its been said earlier SP4 would fly in January. Still In assembly.
Always false commitments made by xyz
Actually problem lies here and HAL is working on it to make it happen.

Currently, final equiping is taking around 3 months which HAL targets to do in 45 days. > This is how they will reach production rate of 8/year.

And with 2 production lines, 16/yr is target.

LA-5004 (SP-4), the fourth series produced LCA took to sky for the first time. After couple of evaluation sorties, she will become the fourth member of Flying Daggers.

Dreams inching towards reality..

Hope they get SP5 and 6 flying within the next 28 days so they meet their target but it isn't looking likely :(

Anyone have any idea why the ADA/NFTC opted to put their LCA test fleet into IAF (and IN) colours? It is usually the norm that test a/c remain in their own unique paint scheme, putting the LCA's test fleet into operational colours can only create confusion, they should have left them in the orginal colours:

Then it would be easier to discern an operational LCA and a test a/c.
