Bengaluru: Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar, Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO), Easter Air Command (Shillong), will take over as the Deputy Chief of Air Staff (DCAS) of Indian Air Force (IAF) today.
As the DCAS, he will now be responsible for controlling the IAF budget, on addition to looking into acquisition of new aircraft, weapon systems, planning and future needs.
Fondly known as ‘Nambi’ among the flying fraternity, this ace Experimental Test Pilot will take over as the DCAS (third highest post in the IAF), at the Air HQ in New Delhi.
During his stint with IAF in the year 2000, Nambi hit headlines after he was among the first three Test Pilots selected to be part of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) project.
Being part of the National Flight Test Centre (NFTC) in Bengaluru, Nambi was part of the LCA team along with other colleagues, Rajeev Kothiyal and Tarun Banerjee, both holding the ranks of Wing Commanders then.
Before moving to Easter Air Command, Nambi was the SASO with the IAF Training Command on Bengaluru. An avid reader, a passionate basketball player and computer buff, Nambi was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Vayu Sena Medal and Bar for his distinguished services.
In 1999, during the Kargil conflict, he was among the top guns IAF banked on to undertake precision strikes on Tiger Hill. Tales of his daring missions have since become inspiration to many young fighter pilots joining the ranks of IAF.
As the Commandant of Aircraft Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE), Nambi is credited with giving more impetus to the modernisation missions of IAF. Under his tutelage the foundation for the formation of No 45 Squadron, now home for the Tejas, took definite shape.
Commissioned in 1981 as a Flying Pilot, Nambi is credited with having highest flying hours (over 2300) on the Mirage 2000. He has a total of over 4,700 flying hours on 35 different types of platforms.
Nambi hails from Kadachira near Kannur and is a member of the illustrious Ayillyath family, which has close links to legendary Communist leaders A K Gopalan and E K Nayanar.
