Vietnam is important of all. Unlike tokan value air force customers like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc we need to sell to Vietnam top of the line Tejas starting from Teja MK-1A to land based version of NLCA MK-2; which is a much superior design. It is for our good.

Vietnam needs to be equipped in general and we have list of system for that. Provide them credit line and start supplying already. And do sell couple of CABS AWE&C as well. Tejas is very good when networked in a system.

Why not consider looking carefully at the F-5 users and Mirage F.1 and Cheetah/ Kfir users? There is a market for a relatively cheap multi-role aircraft. Only competition is former USAF F-16s and Chinese aircraft. The US does not seem to be in a hurry to sell old F-16s cheaply.

Tejas As Capable As Rafale Jet: Defence Minister
Indo-Asian News Service | Updated: Nov 19, 2016 23:32 IST

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar also said that Tejas a top light combat aircraft (LCA).

Panaji: The indigenously manufactured light combat aircraft 'Tejas', which was inducted into the Indian Air Force earlier this year, is as good as the French-made Rafale fighter jet and comparable with other top LCAs across the world, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Saturday.

"This is a plane which is completely indigenously manufactured and can compete with any other fighter plane in the world. It is as capable as the Rafale. Only this is a light combat aircraft (LCA)," Mr Parrikar said.

"Only a 3.5 ton missile can be carried on it, Rafale on the other hand can carry a nine-ton (missile). This plane can fly at the rate of 450 km, Rafale can run 900 km because it has twin engines,"
he added.

The Defence Minister also said that the Tejas, which was stalled for 33 years, was expedited because of his explicit directions to those in-charge of the project.

"I told them that all shortcomings should be fulfilled and the plane should be ready in a year," Mr Parrikar said, adding that some days ago an order had been placed for 83 more planes.

Probably he mean to say Range is 450Km.

It was in news that DAC cleared 83 more planes (MK1-A), does that mean that order has been finally placed ??

It's totally safe to sell Tejas to Vietnam, comparatively not at all to Bangladesh. In near future Vietnam is gona stay anti-China. Same can't be said about Bangladesh if Khalida Zia returns to power. Still we should sell Tejas to Bangladesh but an export version only, unlike Vietnam which should get top of the line Tejas.

LCA Updates:

Bengaluru: No combat role for Tapas (Rustom-2) UAV, which had its maiden flight recently. DRDO Chairman S Christopher told media persons here on Sunday that TAPAS-BH-201(Tactical Advanced Platform for Aerial Surveillance-Beyond Horizon-201) will be in a non-combat role.

“Media reports are incorrect. Tapas is an UAV and not UCAV,” Christopher said. He said the UAV is developed for surveillance purpose only at a total cost of Rs 1,500 crore. “We have to make 10 platforms as part of the project. It was a challenging mission for the team, which consisted of youngsters,” said Tapas Programme Director A P V S Prasad.

On a specific query on the Final Operational Clearance for Tejas, Aeronautical Development Agency head Cmde C D Balaji (Retd) said the process will be completed next year.

“We hope that Tejas would get the FOC by mid of 2017. The BVR Derby missile will be fired again next month. The gun integration work is completed. The air-to-air refuel ling probe too will be tested next year,” Balaji said.

DRDO DG (Aero) C P Ramanarayanan said LCA with Kaveri engine might fly in 2018. He said DRDO is already in consultation with Snecma. Already Rs 2,105 crore has been spent on the project. Another Rs 600 crore is likely to be needed for the testing phase.

On Nirbhay missile, Aeronautical Development Establishment Director M V K V Prasad said a low-flight trial will be held next month.

“This will be followed by two more flights. Work on the air variant is on,” Prasad added.

But the trillion dollar question is

can we produce tejas in numbers to keep up with exports and domestic needs
AF has given firm orders of 80 tejas and suppose if we get order for 20-50 LCA's then
HAL will be doomed as they can produce 4 to maximum 8 every year
