New Delhi: At least seven squadrons of the indigenously-made Tejas Mark-1A will be inducted in the Indian Air Force to make up for the lack of fighters, despite its flaws. The aircraft continues to grapple with thrust issues, which restricts its weapon-carrying capabilities.

Top Defence Ministry sources have told NDTV that "The IAF needs to have a minimum number of aircraft at all times. Till the time indigenously-built Tejas Mark-2 is ready this is best option available." The IAF, it is learnt, has accepted the ministry's decision. Each squadron of the Tejas Mark-1A will have about 16 to 18 aircraft.

The Indian Air Force or IAF will be losing four squadrons of fighters - three MiG 21 squadrons and a MiG 27 squadron - this year and will be losing rest of the 10-odd squadrons of the vintage Russian-made MiGs in phases by 2022.

India is buying 32 Medium Multi Role fighters from France to make up for the lack of the fighters, but needs over 120 lightweight fighters to be used for air defence and intercept oncoming enemy aircraft.

Production of the Tejas Mark-1A can start immediately from the existing manufacturing facilities of the Defence public sector unit Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or HAL.

The Tejas Mark-2 or the improved version will not be ready for induction or series production before 2024-2025. Powered by the General Electric F404-GE-IN20 engine, the Tejas Mark-1A, is slightly more proficient than the current aircraft that is under series production, but continues to be marred with thrust issues. The Light Combat Aircraft MK-1 failed to meet the requirements of the IAF. Nonetheless, to keep the aircraft building programme alive, the IAF has agreed to buy 40 Tejas Mark-1.

Earlier, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India or CAG had pointed that Tejas Mark-1 had severe flaws and didn't meet many critical requirements of the IAF - these included limited "operational capabilities" besides being "overweight." The CAG report placed before houses of Parliament said "the LCA Mark-1 currently under development has shortfalls in meeting the engine thrust and other parameters such as weight of the aircraft, fuel capacity, pilot protection from front against 7.62 mm bullets."

The Defence Research and Development Organisation or DRDO and the HAL have promised to carry out changes that will make the Mark-1A more agile and more capable.

Sources told NDTV that changes will be made in the ballast and the landing gear making the Tejas Mark-1A about 1000 kilograms lighter from the current 6500 kilograms. Besides, Tejas Mark-1A would also be armed by Israeli made radars instead of the heavier but indigenously-made EL/M-2032 lightweight multi-mode radar.

Though I hate "Undie TV" to the fullest extent possible, but by breaking the news of LCA-Tejas induction, it forced me to read the entire story.
At last, my heart is filled with satisfaction that the dream of every patriot will come true... LCA-Tejas will fly in numbers over the Indian sky...
Thank you #ModiSarkar. :balleballe::india::balleballe:

Well, at last the decision came which we have been expecting since the scrapping of MMRCA and subsequent interview of the RM. Parikar did give a huge hint that LCA is going to be the low cost fighter that India can afford in big numbers. This will not only going to be good for the budget, it will also invigorate the LCA-II as well as AMCA project, and also keeps the chance of new tech that will come out of the ongoing projects to be incorporated in a tranche pattern in LCAs that will come down the line.

At last sense prevails.... Kudos to Namo and Parrikar(MoD) :hail:
This will pave way for setting up much needed Aerospace infrastructure and will provide big boost to MK2 and any future aerospace project.

Now waiting for good news from ADA and HAL with regards to FOC.:cool1:

Great ! it will help to control the reducing number of squadrons, further we can upgrade Mark-1A ourselves, and induct Mark-II when ready and even sell the second hand Mark-1A to our buyers later.

We should start aiming for a 50 squadron air force with upto 20 squadrons being built completely in India(LCA,AMCA) another 20 with JVs(SU-30,FGFA) and the balance imported.

Right, I also hope so, 120 LCAs is a good number to start, hopefully we'll replace/upgrade them with LCA MK-II increasing the numbers to 12-14 squadrons later, my gut says that AMCA wont be delayed, if so then I expect at least 8 AMCA squadrons.Pak-Fa T-50 should be bought to avoid delay, FGFA will be a tandem configuration, not good for stealth, so I am skeptic towards FGFA,

^ I would take that ndtv report. NDTV hardly would care for Indian interests.

Where is the engine for LCA Mk-1A?
And doesn't the speculation over the ballast weight itself signify a hanky-panky?

What if all this is a delaying tactic. You forget that HAL is 'advised' by Ex-IAF people. Besides there is not solitary quote, as such, from any traceable accountable person, in that report. Characterstic of MSM in India peddling foreign interests.

Rather, because the only traceable quote is from the Ex-Defence Secretary of UPA and present CAG so we can safely presume that the purpose of the report is to drive that point in.

I am waiting for Dr. Saraswat to bring in SAAB as a manufacturing partner with say Tata's as the makers of the LCA Mk-2.

LCA Mk-2 should not be given to HAL till the HAL is rid of its 'advisors'. No wonder SAAB asked for G2G deal. I say we give it to them.

And lets just see the LCA Mk-1 first before this talk of LCA Mk-1A, waghera. ADA has given the drawings and now its HALs job to first give us the 40 LCA Mk-1 that were ordered.

Earlier I was also excited by LCA Mk-1A proposal but where is the progress on that. Where is the govt. support for it except these kinds of unattributed reports.

Despite Flaws, India to Induct Tejas Mark 1-A Fighter Aircraft

New Delhi: The government has decided to induct at least seven squadrons of the made-in-India Tejas Mark 1-A Light Combat Aircraft or LCA into the Indian Air Force, to make up for a shortage of fighters.

The Tejas Mark 1-A is slightly more proficient than the first-cut home-made LCA, the Tejas, but the aircraft still has some flaws. For one, there are doubts about its ability to carry the required payload of weapons. Also, its Indian-made radar needs to be replaced with an Israeli radar.

The IAF has agreed to induct the Tejas Mark 1-A as it urgently needs more than 120 lightweight fighters to be used for air defence and to intercept enemy aircraft. A squadron has about 16 to 18 aircraft each.

It had earlier agreed to induct 40 Tejas', an aircraft that India's national auditor CAG said had severe flaws with "shortfalls in meeting the engine thrust and other parameters such as weight of the aircraft, fuel capacity, pilot protection from front against 7.62 mm bullets."

The IAF agreed to induct the flawed aircraft to keep the Tejas program alive.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and defence public sector unit Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or HAL, who are manufacturing the LCA have promised a more agile Mark 1-A.

The Tejas Mark 1-A is slightly more proficient than the first-cut home-made LCA, the Tejas

Sources, told NDTV that changes will be made in the ballast and the landing gear making the Tejas Mark 1-A about 1000 kg lighter than its 6500-kg predecessor. Delivery can begin next year.

Defence Ministry sources told NDTV that "the IAF needs to have a minimum number of aircraft at all times. Till the time the indigenously built Tejas Mark II is ready this is best option available."

The Tejas Mark 2, expected to address the flaws in the Mark 1-A, will not be ready for induction or series production before 2024-2025. The Air Force will find itself very short of fighters after it decommissions three squadrons of its MiG 21 and one MiG 27 squadron this year; it will lose the rest of its 10-odd squadrons of the vintage Russian-made MiGs by 2022.

The government is buying 32 Rafale fighters from France to be delivered in the next five years

:balleballe::basanti::eek1:

Is this true? Delivery as of next year ? Which means AESA will be tested shortly and they must have already begun dropping the weight. So I begin to wonder if AESA will be used during FOC trials of BVR missiles like R-77/I Derby-ER and even the Python-5... hmmm very good news if true. This also means the production rate of the LCA is bound to increase to at least 24+ a year by 2017, enough to keep the line busy till 2022 when the MK-2 is ready.

Few years ago during congress it looked like it will be cancelled completely.

Order means directive to keep production lines open, we have 8 Tejas being built per year they will probably bring in private secto to double that.

Also the su30 deal will wrap up soon, freeing more capacity for Hal. I believe this deal just because I know iaf has no alternative.
