India, US finalise Rs 3000 crore deal for jet engines
NEW DELHI, JAN 20 : India and the US have finalised a Rs 3000-crore deal for supplying 99 jet engines to be used in the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft 'Tejas' being developed by the DRDO.

Around two years ago, India had selected the American company General Electric over its rival European Eurojet 2000 for the LCA Mark II programme expected to be ready around 2014-15.

"The deal worth Rs 3,000 crore has been finalised with the US for procuring 99 engines for the LCA Tejas MkII," DRDO officials said here.

As per the contract, the order could be for 99 engines initially but India will have the option of ordering another 100 engines in the future.

The engine on offer for the LCA Mark II is GE F-414 engine, which are more powerful that the GE F-404 engines fitted in the first batch of LCAs that the Indian Air Force would receive in near future.

The need for changing the existing engines in the LCAs was felt after the IAF found out that the GE-404 engines were not providing enough power to the aircraft and more powerful engines were needed for the purpose.

The DRDO is developing the LCA Mk II to meet the Air Force requirements and it will have latest technological equipment including the Active Electronic Scanned Array (AESA) radar and would be able to carry more payload than the LCA Mk I.

Recently, the trials of the LCA Mk I were carried out in Pokhran desert firing range where laser-guided bombs and other weapon systems were tried.

As per the current plans, the IAF will induct two squadrons of the LCA Mk I which would be followed by delivery of LCA Mk II aircraft.

Tarmak007 -- A bold blog on Indian defence: HAL gears up for first flight of Tejas LSP-8 | Tyagi says lines decked up for series production

Bangalore: The Indian Air Force's (IAF) long and frustrating wait to own the home-grown combat fighter might be finally over with the Limited Series Production (LSP-8) version of Tejas completing two crucial engine ground runs (EGR) successfully. An elated Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) chairman R K Tyagi told Express on Wednesday that his boys are working overtime to ensure that the LSP-8 hits the skies soon.
Battered by the media, bruised by IAF and butchered by desi aerospace gurus for unprecedented time and cost overruns, Team Tejas had to face the music from all quarters, for over a decade. Tyagi, who took over the reins of HAL last year, said thatLSP-8 would make its maiden flight some time in February. "The aircraft is almost akin to the series production (SP) standard aircraft. We have upgraded the systems to incorporate the feedback from the ground/flight evaluation teams, who dealt with earlier LSP variants," Tyagi said. It will be the 13th aircraft from the Tejas project flight-line to take to the skies, and along with LSP-7, the IAF pilots should soon begin their much-awaited user evaluation trials.
Two preliminary EGRs of LSP-8 have been completed so far for the first time by HAL personnel and certified byNational Flight Test Centre. The aircraft is currently undergoing finalsystem checks, to be followed by further inspections by certifying agencies. "Then we will have final ground runs, leading to low speed taxi trials (LSTT), high speed taxi trials (HSTT) and the actual first flight," Tyagi said. "My team is really jubilant and we would soon commence the work on series production," Tyagi added.
He said with most of the aircraft system performance reaching almost desired level of expectation, Team Tejas in HAL would now be able to concentrate on stabilizing the production line. "The production line of Tejas at HAL has been moved to a new premises with a built-up area of around 28,000 sqm of Hangars, engineering andadministrative blocks. Upgrade and augmentation of production tooling, which is expected to be 2.5 times of prototype requirements, is underway to enhance the rate of production and to expedite delivery of the aircraft," Tyagi said. HAL promises to add more teeth to IAF by delivering 2 Squadrons of Tejas in the next five years.

And still it will be 2017 until the Tejas MK-I actually rolls out of an assembly line followed by a series of flimsy excuses....forget MK-II

Re: HAL gears up for first flight of Tejas LSP-8 and LCA series produc

Good i hope LSP-8 will fire BVR missile , LCA is yet to fire one

How different is LSP-8 from other LSP's can some one explain?

And status of below projects as well?

http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/introductions-greetings/46593-latest-status-hjt-36-saras.html
The test of BVR is not exactly the priority right now. Lsp8, being a production model, will need to first be tested for reliability in sustained deployments, akin to what the aircraft will experience daily in IAF operations. This means the AC will need to be exorcised of any recurring glitches. Also the priority is now shifting to stabilising the production line.

The TACDE will probably get its hands on the first or second set of Tejas, where the tactics for deployment and usage in various situations will be developed.

Tarmak007 -- A bold blog on Indian defence: Tejas LSP-8 systems as per IOC standards: ADA chief

Bangalore: The limited series production (LSP-8) version of India's Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, is said to have incorporatedall features sought by theIndian Air Force (IAF), so that it qualifies for the initial operational clearance (IOC). Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) head P.S. Subramaniam tells Express that Tejas LSP-8, the last aircraft from the test flightline, is tailor-made as per the pilot's needs. "All designsare final. All systems are as per the final IOC standards and have matured with the aircraft," Subramaniam said.
He said building of LSP-8 aircraft, its first flights and subsequent tests will be the last stepping stonetowards the programme entering the series production phase. The IAFhas placed an initial orderof 20 Tejas. The ADA boss said that LSP-8 has pressure-refueling capabilities (the entire aircraft can be filled with fuel just in 5-6 minutes as against the 30-minutestaken for gravity filling). "Tejas LSP-8 is an all-weather, day and night capability fighter and with very maintenance-friendly features. It's an aircraft built based on the needs expressed by Test pilots," he said.
He said the pilot-vehicle interface features supported by avionics software are excellent in LSP-8 and as desired by the users. "The new aircraft is very robust with reliable flight control system. The aircraft has good compatibility with ground support and ground-handling equipment. I can now confidentially say that all that is required for an aircraft to get inducted into the Service is built into LSP-8," Subramaniamsaid.
When asked whether the induction of Tejas into theIAF will further slip, considering that the IAF pilots might come back with more requirements after the user evaluation trials, the ADA chief said: "The feedback what we are getting from the Test pilots who have flown Tejas is excellent. Every stage we had pilots closely working with us."

Have a question here. Wasn't the Indian Airforce also part of the feedback and improvement process for LSP series for aircrafts? I mean the entire point of Limited Series is for the shortcomings from the customer's view point to be removed step by step isn't it and the entire promised profile to be achieved eventually.. So the SP and LSP-8 are more for the IAF to evaulate the build quality and the final place it will have in the command and control structure as well as develop some literature and scenario's based and the pros and limitations of this aircraft family. Probably the guru's know more on this..:)

Just Reading this alone makes my day.Though any technological endeavour is a ongoing process of learning and correction the LSP-8 can definitely be said to have reached a milestone in INDIA's Strive towards achieving auronautical and technological poweress. I am in no way saying there is not a much more dificult road ahead with great challenges what with the production series yet to come and the production line to be stabilized and Mk.2 atill in design. But in the story of LCA a.k.a Tejas this is one of those moments I feel when the bitterness of failiures past should be kept down and we should look ahead with confidence. What a journey it has been for this small fighter(A gaint for the indian industry!!) . Mixed emotions when LSP-8 will take to the air. Fingers Crossed ;):)

I have a question. Does the Tejas now fly with the generic Elta EL/M-2032 radar kit that is provided by Israel or do we have the hybrid version with this radar modified with INDIAN parts?? I have searched in google and found explanations that suggest both ways :S. Also do we really have this radar in liscenced production or is it completely imported?

Only the back end signal processor is from ELTA, The whole radar equipments is indain and has no relation with Elta-2032 ,when it comes to range or power.
