Tejas Mk.2 Build Begins

HAL is looking to put the Mk.2, powered by the General Electric F414-GE-INS6 turbofan engine, into the air in 2014. The highly anticipated Mk.2 programme will cost at least $542.44-million (Rs 2431.55-crore), comprising full scale engineering development. The IAF has put down an official requirement for 83 of the Mk.2s. Working on a detailed post on the Mk.2. No timeframe, though!

This blog never says a good word about tejas or the technological challenges that were met during the program,never compares it with other programs of similar nature and continues to harp on the same stereotypes that are echoed by the likes of flight global artcle of 2009 about tejas or prof.prodyut das vayu type article.
If tejas mk-1 was floundering how can a mk-2 version be built upon the fluondering aerodynamic with minimal changes in design within two years.

The original asr detailed by Air marshal MSD woolen( former HAL chief) was for a light combat aircraft of 12 ton mtow with a top speed of mach 1.5 at high altitude and with a 17 degree STR but mk-1 will cross 1.8 at service ceiling with higher powered GE-404 engine in serial production version with a mtow of 14 tons.

because such informed reporting is not seen in most of the sites on the net.

they will just say mk-1 floundered for 30 years, and presto mk-2 will fly after rectifying all the defects within 2 years with a minor tweak.
Same as the guys who say that arjun floundered fro 30 years, now with all the improvements suggested by army , suddenly in mk-2 version all defects are rectified and the tank is raring to go.

they dont take the time to analyze complex programs and interview the technical people involved and give a balanced report based on fair analysis.
mk-2 will have a mtow of close to 16 tons with a top speed about mach 2 .

if you ask the author of the technical master piece in the above blog how the floundering airframe of tejas mk-1 will evolve into such an awesome (just short of grippen NG according to ACM NAIK) MRCA type that too within just two years, there will be only more bluffing in reply.I dont know what timeframe he needs to write the article, as all proposed specs and designs and capabilities of mk-2 is already all over the net.

The design is going for some time..

=====================
===================== @ersakthivel

Its design looks influenced from SU-30MKI & MIG-29 IRF proble..

But LCA one is more compact than these..

We may see this in further development of LCA MK-2 into MK3..

I always wanted the front section to look like the EADS MAKO...

Would have been a jump start.We had the EADS as advisor too.

Hi Everyone,

Came across an article on the Tejas in the Business Standard -

After three months on ground, combat aircraft Tejas resumes test flight - Ajai Shukla / New Delhi Nov 27, 2012, 00:53 IST
link - After three months on ground, combat aircraft Tejas resumes test flight

"The Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), which has remained grounded for more than three months, finally resumed flight-testing last week. Seven flights of the Tejas have taken place since then without mishap.

The grounding of Tejas, which was kept secret, took place because of the new pilot's helmets. Since these protruded above the ejection seats, the helmets could have prevented a smooth ejection by smashing into the fighter's canopy before it was blown off. Since that constituted a serious safety issue for pilots, flight-testing was halted since August.

The Defence R&D Organisation (DRDO) chief, V K Saraswat, confirmed to Business Standard that the problem had been resolved. The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), the DRDO agency that oversees the Tejas programme, has now provided a backup mechanism to blow off the canopy before the pilot's head struck it."

However the one that is very interesting is this part -

"An upbeat Saraswat says the three-month delay gave ADA an opportunity to resolve several other problems, which needed to be done on the ground.

"We have made use of this time by solving many of the problems which were part of the feedback that came from the flight test programme. I feel by middle of next year we should complete (the IOC)," said Saraswat."

Hence kudos to our engineers who are working tirelessly and resolving issues that are cropping up. Keep up the good work. Does anyone know what could be the issues that were resolved?

A proper perspective of the lca program from the following site by Former SA to PM Ashok Parthasarathi and Vice Adm. (retd) Raman Puri
Sniperz Blog: The real LCA story

At that point, apart from the weaponisation requirements the project had to undergo extensive redesign to accommodate an air-to-air missile chosen by the IAF, which was considerably heavier and longer than what had been specified till 2000. The IAF had again changed its mind. This necessitated the complete redesign of the wing structure, using only composite materials in order to keep the weight within limits. The period of this redesign was also utilised to upgrade the avionics, to a completely open architecture.
Consequently, in "generational terms" the LCA is a fourth generation-plus aircraft with full networking capabilities. This made it more than comparable to anything the IAF had, and possibly would have, even after it acquires the 126 Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA) now on tender, with first deliveries due eight years hence.

if you are living in 2012 you are expected to know how many tejas are in IAf.Don't post questions that can be answered by a simple google click here.
