LRDE is yet to choose a Development Partner for making the AESA for AMCA. Seems like the same radar can go on the LCA.

Elta and Thales are still in the race I suppose. Elbit is not in it AFAIK.




There are some things they won't hand over. They will be more than willing to sell entire systems rather than small, but critical, parts of it. Quite like Russia does for some systems.
Which one will be the best for LCA ?
If I am not wrong there are 3 different AESA radars which can be fitted on LCA.

1) Elta. : EL/M 2052.
2) Thales : RBE-2
3) Selex Galileo : Vixen 850E.

Even the Su 30 MkIs are going to be replaced by the Zhuk AESA Radar. I am sure Navy is going to go for AESA

This is a mechanically scanning dish with look up and look down mode separate. It has probe antennas at the front which makes it a dopplar or PESA radar.

Indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) 'Tejas' will be inducted into the Indian Air Force in 2012, DRDO chief V.K. Saraswat has said.

"With 'Tejas' completing almost 1,855 flying hours (flight tests) and all problems it encountered during the initial operational clearance having been solved, it is ready to enter into the final operational clearance phase. With production also having taken off at HAL... we are now at the verge of writing history as far as aeronautics is concerned," he said here.

"LCA will be inducted this year in the armed forces where our own squadrons of Air Force will be flying this aircraft," he said.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) director general was speaking after inaugurating the 'Aerospace Luminary Lecture Series' organised by Hyderabad chapter of Aeronautical Society of India last night.

Referring to the recent successful maiden flight of the Naval variant of LCA, Saraswat said, "The first flight trial of LCA Navy achieved capability, particularly on take off and landing, from an aircraft carrier. The Naval variant will certainly be a force multiplier for Indian Navy."

The LCA has been conceived and designed by DRDO's Aeronautical Development Agency and manufactured at Bangalore- based Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL).

Saraswat said April 2012 will go down in the history as a historic month as it saw successful launches of Agni-V, RISAT-I (radar imaging satellite) and first flight trial of LCA Navy.

India at present has a potent long-range ballistic missile system, said Saraswat, who is also the Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister.

Nuclear capable Agni-V ballistic missile, with a strike range of over 5,000 km, was successfully test-fired on April 19.

Agni-V is a game changer in terms of technology, the DRDO chief said, adding, "it has taken the country to a higher pedestal in terms of deterrence."

"We have joined a select group of countries who have this technology and capability," Saraswat said.

"Agni-V has allowed us to take this technology to higher level, be it for anti-satellite mission or launch of satellites on short notice."

However, there is still a long way to go for programmes related to UAVs, advance medium combat aircraft and a variety of long-range missiles, he said.

There was a need for almost 400-500 engineers every year to accelerate and complete the ongoing projects/programmes, the top defence scientist said.

"If we don't have that kind of manpower... we are going to lag behind. The moment your are not in a position to provide systems on right time, with right quality and right numbers, there will be pressure on us to allow their imports. And once you have imports, our goal of self-reliance will take a beating," Saraswat noted.

"Our goal is to provide self-reliance in the area of aerospace, aircraft and defence equipment. If we can have great designers and production centres, I think this country can become self-reliant and master any technology."

Which one will be the best for LCA ?
If I am not wrong there are 3 different AESA radars which can be fitted on LCA.

1) Elta. : EL/M 2052.
2) Thales : RBE-2
3) Selex Galileo : Vixen 850E.
IMHO it would help if commonality can be established with the THALES ASEA radar that will come with Rafale. Given the Rafale's puny nose cone it shouldn't be too difficult adapting the same radar for the LCA (Navy + Airforce), since the radar's almost ready we can expect speedy induction as well. Let's see how things fan out.

ELM 2053 seems to be the best choice. 64 Targets against 40 of Thales and actively engage 8
LCA's antenna size is too small for that. The APG-77 with a 900mm array can theoretically track 100 targets.

If we have a radar that tracks 20 targets and engage 4 that is way more than enough. It's not like LCA can carry 12 missiles or 30 bombs.

A naval version of the LCA was recently successfully tested and the first flight trial of the LCA Navy achieved capability, particularly on take-off and landing, from an aircraft carrier. The Naval variant will certainly be a force multiplier for the Indian Navy.

India is now at a stage with advance sophisticated military technology and has a mix of potent weapon systems in it's inventory.

First squadron of LCA to be stationed in Sulur, TN.

The first squadron of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas would be located at Sulur Airbase near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, a senior DRDO official said. Twenty LCAs would be stationed at Sulur in the first phase by early next year and as many aircraft would be added to the squadron subsequently, RDO Chief Controller (R&D) W. Selvamurthy said, adding, requisite facilities including hanger and runway were being put in place. Similarly another fleet of 40 LCAs, designed by DRDO and manufactured by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, would be stationed at an airbase near Dindigul in Tamil Nadu by the second half of next year, he told reporters on Tuesday. The Defence ministry had already attested initial operation clearance last year and LCA's Air and Naval variants had already been rolled out. He said DRDO was also planned to develop unmanned aerial vehicle in four versions and prototype models had already been made. The fifth version of Agni cruise missile with a 5,000km range is likely to be demonstrated by January.

Selvamurthy, who is also in-charge of international cooperation wing of DRDO, said several pacts were envisaged with countries like USA, UK, France, Israel and Belarus to develop Joint Ventures for production of ultra modern weapons and equipment for Defence purposes. He said an Indo-US joint technology group has been set up to develop foliage penetration radars and ground penetration radars which would help in anti-terrorist and anti-insurgency operations. A two-year time frame had been set to design and develop the related products. Earlier, addressing the students of National Institute of Technology here, he said DRDO would recruit a minimum of 5,000 people, including 3,000 scientists, in the next six months. DRDO with over 50 laboratories across the country has a headcount of 30,000 including about 8,000 scientists. He said orders worth Rs20,000 crores have been received for AKASH cruise missiles from different defence establishments in the world.

^ as of now order for only 20 tejas mk1 and 20 tejas mk 2 have been placed. the people mentioned above are noted saying that first batch of 40 will be placed in sulur and second batch of 40 again will be placed in other base. is the second batch just a speculation or reality.
moreover the first batch is said to have 20 tejas which are mk 1 or mk2??
also timing, first batch of 20 by early next year and next 20 by later half of year.
moreover in second base the 40 will come up by second halg of next year.

by the end of 2013 we gonna have 80 tejas flying with iaf.

it cnat be true how cna we produce 80 tejas in 2 years

The new squadron will be named FLYING DAGGERS : NO 45

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has begun the preparations for formation of the first squadron of Tejas in Bangalore. The No 45 Squadron will be known as Flying Daggers (same as MiG-21/MiG-21 Bis Sqn). Air Cmdr B.R. Krishna, Chief Test Pilot, Aircraft Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE), Bangalore, who spoke to a select-group of journos at Aero India Media Centre, confirmed that the ASTE has identified 2 pilots to fly the Tejas as part of the IAF's user-evaluation. The squadron will be first raised in Bangalore, before moving to Sulur in Coimbatore.




Air Cmdr Krishna said that a lot of inputs from his boys have gone into the Tejas program (cockpit design, improvements), considering some of the Tejas test pilots at NFTC are already from ASTE. The LSP-7 & 8 platforms will be released to IAF for user-evaluation (the much-awaited) following the initial operations clearance (IOC-1 as termed by IAF). The AoA@22 is a critical phase for Tejas program now.

ASTE hopes to get the LSP-7 & 8 platforms in the next 3-4 months, following which the ADA-HAL team would have to really step on the gas to make the changes (as suggested by the IAF pilots) and get going with the final operational clearances (FOC) and series production.

The 2 pilots from ASTE will also undergo Tejas simulator flying at ADE and work closely with the current team (IAF-PMT, ADA, HAL, NFTC, CEMILAC & ADE). "The preparations for the squadron formation (including ground equipment) are on as planned," Air Cmdr Krishna added.

Sources confirm to Tarmak007 that Wg Cdr Paranjal Singh (a Test pilot with ASTE) and Wg Cdr Manish Kumar (a Flight Test Engineer with ASTE) are the chosen ones from IAF (outside NFTC) to fly LSP-7 and LSP-8. "Manish has to fly the trainer since he is an engineer and until then he will be involved in ground-test duties. Paranjal has already flown an LCA and we are ensuring their transformation to the new platform is smooth," sources said.

Akash is cruise missile? Who are the countries we are exporting this low range SAM? Even IAF couldn't get the required numbers of the same. The production capacity is very small at present.

U.S. Navy Joins India's Light Combat Aircraft Project

The U.S. Navy has agreed to come on board India's much delayed Naval Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) program and will audit tests and provide feedbacks to the Indian team.

The Naval LCA-NP1, also known as Tejas, made its maiden flight a week ago in Bangalore


The U.S. will join the Russians and the Europeans who were earlier roped in to realize the LCA project which has been delayed by over 15 years.
The U.S Navy Carrier Suitability Test Team is the latest of three foreign consultants to join team LCA. Among the many problems the LCA program is faced with, one is the weight of the prototype which is heavier by 500 kgs over the requirement of a carrier-based fighter. The Test Team is expected to tackle this issue.

According to Indian media reports, the U.S Test Team will not be paid for its services.

In 2011, the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Group (EADS) was introduced to the program in order to help developers reduce the weight of the fighter.

Meanwhile, the Gromov Institute in Russia is currently testing the Kaveri engine on an Ilyushin-76 engine test bed aircraft and has completed 55 hours of testing at the Institute.

The Naval LCA-NP1, also known as Tejas, made its maiden flight a week ago at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bangalore.
