After going through the debacle of EF-2000 and JSF, its pretty obvious how much effort goes into makeing an Fighter jet. Tejas is good for India and it just need some solid finishing touches.

I am telling you, there must be some very cleaver people in the Navy compared to IAF because they seem to have gotten all their Indian made ships working already and in a master stroke of presence of mind they even asked for the Mk-2 version of Tejas for Navy and did not waster time with the older F-404 engine version.. So Navy will start of with the F-414 engine aircraft!

OMG, Ajay didn't mention F-35. Someone must have made him realise how stupid he sounded bytching about it. I do agree that LCA must be given priority and signing the Snecma -Kaveri deal will get it done.
Armand you never miss a chance, do you ...

You seem to have changed a lot since France won MRCA.

Money talks they say and so damn right they are. Armand talks good about LCA, cooperation on AMCA. And the Brits going bonkers after losing. Yeah baby, show the money and see them dance.

Indian Navy to have 100 combat jets, 500 aircraft

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Verma told India Strategic that air power is an integral component of the Indian Navy's modernization programme with at least three aircraft carriers in the future. The Naval Chief declined to mention the exact timelines but observed that each platform of the Navy would be equipped with progressively better technologies and newer generation systems as they evolve. The effort is on acquiring capabilities, and eventually indigenizing them with special emphasis on operational capabilities in the Electronic Warfare (EW) environment. The Indian Navy has already ordered 45 Mig 29K combat jets from Russia, 16 of them in the first lot in 2004, and the remaining now. Incidentally, this is the first time that the Russians are supplying training simulators with their aircraft; the Indian Air Force never got any in the good old days from the Soviet Union or Russia. These Mig 29K aircraft are specifically meant for INS Vikramaditya aka Admiral Gorshkov being acquired from Russia end-2012 before the Navy Day on Dec 4.The 60 other combat jets being planned for acquisition may be different. Adm Verma did not elaborate. All he said was that the Navy has planned for about 500 aircraft, helicopters, LRMR and MRMR included. It may be noted however that various aircraft manufacturers, US Boeing (F/A 18 Super Hornet) and Lockheed Martin (F 35 JSF), French Dassault (Rafale) and Swedish Saab (Sea Gripen) have made presentations to the Navy.At present, only the Boeing F/A 18 and Rafale operate from aircraft carriers while the JSF, the futuristic 5th Generation aircraft under development has demonstrated the capability to land and take off from ships in flight trials. There is also the naval version of the India's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) being developed by HAL.The choice should be known after a few years. The Navy has already ordered 12 Boeing P8-I long Range Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft (LRMR) and another 12 LRMR and half a dozen Medium Range Maritime Reconnaissance (MRMR) aircraft are under consideration.Besides these, the Navy is looking for an assortment of aircraft to operate in the contemporary and futuristic Electronic Warfare (EW) environment with cutting edge technologies. The US has offered Northrop Grumman's advance E-2D Hawkey shipboard aircraft for battle management but that is where it stands. There is no "Yes" or "No" from the Indian Navy.Adm Verma said that what the Navy was looking at were just not numbers of aircraft, ships, submarines and other assets but their capabilities. Any equipment and system has to operate and last for years. New and newer technologies are emerging rapidly and whatever the Navy buys, has to be value for money and security for years to come.As for ships and submarines, he said that by 2027, the Navy should have mostly new 150 ships and submarines to enable operations in both the western and eastern seaboards of India to protect the country's maritime interests. The Navy has also acquired two refueling vessels to enable its ships to stay far from the shores and for longer durations.

Deal was still pending:

India finalises contract with GE for 99 aircraft engines

The Price Negotiation Committee (PNC), which was set up late 2010 after GE had nipped Eurojet to become the lowest bidder, has recently finalised the deal after having surpassed all the hurdles before it and the file is now expected to go to the CCS anytime.
GE had been, in September 2010, declared the lowest bidder over Eurojet's EJ200 to power the Mk-II version of India's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)—tejas–but there were a lot of issues that had to be resolved before the PNC could finalise the contract details.
The PNC though stuck to its stand that it would not be a viable move for India and has finally convinced the US against such a payment. Two other important issues that were dealt with by the committee were, GE wanted India to sign the deal with one of its subsidiaries and not with it, citing various reasons and GE wanted India to agree to pay liabilities in case the IAF"ˆused aircraft powered by these engines to carry nuclear weapons and in case that crashed in Pakistan.

India was not keen on both the propositions. "...We had cleared the engine that was proposed by GE and not any of its subsidiaries for us to consider that.We wanted the company which responded to the RFP to be responsible," a source from ADA said, adding that GE has been conviced to even drop the clause that requires us to pay liabilities.

Israeli Derby to be Prime BVRAAM for Tejas MK-1
Published February 21, 2012 | By admin

SOURCE: IDRW NEWS NETWORK

Indian air force has cleared proposal to equip Tejas MK-1 with Israeli Derby BVR Air to Air missile, and Government of India will Shorty sign a contract with the makers of the missiles Rafael Advanced Defence systems soon.

Tejas MK-1 which has a hybrid radar based on Israeli Elta's 2032 radar and Indian technology seems to be the prime reason behind the selection, although DRDO is working on developing a home grown Air to Air Missile under Astra Project, but it seems that missile will take time to carry out all its test parameters and currently has been integrated with Sukhoi su 30 MKI aircrafts only and will also see first firing of the missile in mid of 2012.

Astra BVRAAM should be ready by the time Tejas MK-2 enters production, but major chunk of the testing of the missile will be done from Sukhoi su 30 MKI. Indian navy already operates Derby BVRAAM on its SEA Harriers aircrafts, which under limited upgrade program was equipped with Elta 2032 radar, along with Derby BVRAAM.

Sources close to idrw.org also have told us that Python-5 might be also be considered for Tejas MK-1 for meeting short range Air to Air missile ,Russian R-73 was successfully had been integrated with Tejas MK-1, but it seems some issues might have surfaced due to which air force is also interested in Israeli Python-5 .

Israeli Derby Missile to Arm New Indian Fighter

Israeli Missile on India Fighter - Defense/Middle East - News - Israel National News

India's new Tejas fighter will be armed with Israel's Derby missile, according to Indian website LiveMint. The Derby is medium-range active-radar seeker air-to-air missile, that can hit targets at about 50 km. away. Missiles that can achieve this range are known by the acronym BVR - beyond visual range.

A contract for supplying the Derby will be signed by March with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
