AHMEDABAD: ABG Shipyard Ltd, India's biggest private shipbuilding company, has started the work for installing a shiplift at its Dahej facility.
This shiplift 270 metres long 47 metre wide will be the biggest such infrastructure facility at any shipyard in India.

"We have got the necessary permissions from Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) to erect this shiplift. This will be the biggest shiplift to be installed in any shipyard in India," a company official told TOI.

It will take about a year for the company to start making ships on this facility, which will have the capacity to take 30,000 tonnes.

Shiplift is the modern alternative, a structural platform, to the conventional dry dock, where ships are constructed and launched into the water.

ABG has decided to invest Rs 260 crore to get this shiplift from Germany's Rolls Royce Marine Electrical Systems that markets shiplifts with brand name Syncrolift.

"The installation of shiplift will also make construction of ships faster," said officials.

ABG's Dahej shipyard is armed with orders of 39 bulk carriers, 20 anchor handling tugs and two jack-up rigs, most of these for export to countries like The Netherlands, Norway, Finland and Egypt.

Of these, eight bulk carriers and anchor-handling tugs each are under construction. Combined with the orders being executed at its Magdalla facility, ABG has orders worth Rs 12,000 crore. Most deliveries are likely to be done by 2012-13.

ABG plans to take the total investment in Dahej shipyard to Rs 1,200 crore in next 2-3 years. Till now, since the beginning of the construction of this facility in 2007, it has invested Rs 720 crore.

It will also construct a 200-metre-long jetty by investing Rs 30 crore.

30.000 tonnes I suppose can be used to build Aircraft carriers. But it is a pricvate shipyard so we have no idea wether a contract might be given.

How do you all see ship building industry in India evolving in the coming decade?

I am thinking about investing some money into this industry a lot of private shipyards are coming up and its getting good amount of orders, as the world comes out of the slowdown and global demand starts picking up again the industry could attract a lot of orders.

Any advice?
