If all pans out well by next year ending Steppe homeland of PIE hypothesis will die out just like Anatolian hypothesis.

According to the Max Plank institute, the dates for PIE have been pushed back to 11kbp, with an origin in Iran. This makes Indo-Europeanization a Neolithic phenomena, and there has been no complete data, that contradicts this.

Sanskrit/Proto-Vedic speaker in Harappa....My bet is ON.

I believe absence of steppe ancestry in Harappa and archaelogical similarities to Vedic culture in Saraswati-Sindhu could have been one of the final nails in the coffin.

"We are quite certain that the Indo-European languages ultimately originated in the Fertile Crescent,as proponents of the Anatolian theory suppose, but not as they suggest, in Western/Central Anatolia; rather, it emerged from NORTHERN IRAN" Johannes Krause (Max Plank Institute)

From Iran, into India, E. Turkey, and through the Caucuses, onto the Steppe.

"Location of population that first spoke an Indo-European language was south of Caucasus Mountains, present-day Iran or Armenia, because ancient DNA from people who lived there matches what we would expect for a source population both for Yamnaya and for ancient Anatolians."

Indo-Europeanization wasn't a Bronze age phenomena rather it was a Neolithic phenomena.

As per latest research evidences.

Rahul Chawla:

The name of Elephant in Indo-European languages:

Sanskrit: íbha-
Greek: el-éphas
Mycenean Greek: erepa
Hittite: laḫpa-

The existence of a common word for Elephant shows that it was present in the PIE homeland. Where Elephants are found? The answer is India.

Not anymore, as per genetic data from 2015-2018, the hypothesis leads to Armenia/N. Iran as the Indo-European homeland, with Yamnaya making up the 2nd wave of IE (themselves having 48-58% Armenian DNA ancestry).

Pontic Steppes were the 2nd wave.

Krausse & Trappe (2019) - Max Planck Institute have suggested Iran-N cline as the IE signal. If this conjecture is true - then IVC as 85% Iran-N and 15% AHG would have been predominantly IE speaking.

However the loanword for elephant might be Drav!

It seems that – now that the Danish workgroup (responsible for the “steppe ancestry = Indo-European” and “Corded Ware expanded from Yamna“) is backing down, and both it and the Reich/Jena group are accepting that Yamna represents the expansion of Late Indo-European into Afanasevo, Bell Beaker, and Sintashta – anything before Yamna in the steppe is just another “conflicting theory” among equals…

So forget the “steppe ancestry = PIE”, and welcome the newly fashionable “CHG ancestry = PIE“, and of course the Iranian homeland.

At the beginning of the Neolithicum, at c. 8000 BCE, they were probably distributed across western Iran and the Caucasus, and people similar to northern Caucasus and Iranian plateau hunter-gatherers arrived before 6000 BCE in Pakistan and north-west India.
