Heroic Sergeant Dipprasad Pun HOISTED a giant machine gun off its mount and HELD it as he blazed away at a dozen attackers.

Firepower ... Sgt Dip held 30lb gun and let fly 750 rounds a minute
He is believed to have killed three and wounded several others with the gun - weighing well over 30lb and hammering out 750 rounds a minute.
A source said: "It would have taken a superhuman effort to hold the gun and fire it. Apart from its weight, the recoil is colossal."

Firefight ... he held off a dozen Taliban from rooftop, killing at least 3
The 15-minute stand came after Sgt Dip, 31, was left at a checkpoint in Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand.
Spotting a Taliban attack, he ran on to a roof to man a 7.62mm general purpose machine gun mounted on a tripod.
As the insurgents came over the wall Sgt Dip realised he could not lower the gun enough to hit them. So he yanked out the pins locking it down - CHUCKING the heavy tripod at the enemy - and lifted it up.
He also beat off the attackers with grenades and an SA80 rifle before reinforcements arrived.
Sgt Dip, of 1st Battalion the Royal Gurkha Rifles, would not speak about the September 17 battle. And it is too early to speculate if he will win a medal as citations have not been written. But Army spokesman Lt Col David Eastman said: "He is a credit to his unit."

Just as I guessed, he was from the British Army. I was confused because there are some Indian Troops in Afghanistan as well. Nonetheless, great show of bravery.

I heard that UK is encouraging immigration and citizenship to anyone from the subcontinent who is willing to join the British Army. Is this true? Could someone confirm that?

-Thanks-

He should be in Indian Army. Why is he prepared to die for Britishers?

Amazing presentation of bravery and strength. If one soldier of the gurkha rifles of a battalion can do this act then think about the whole battalion.:emot112:

Gurkhas are so brave, yet British Army treats them like crap. Can't even afford vehicles much less armor.

Since in the WW-II British have raised the Gurkha Regiment. One is maintained by the IA later and British lately decided to raise a one and it came out in 1994.

The Nepalese Gurkhas are natives of Nepal not India and as such they have the right to choose the British army over the Indian army,i too have old classmates who studied upto class 12 with me serving with the Royal Gurkhas in Afghanistan. For the Gurkhas enlistment into the Royal Gurkhas is as hotly contested as the entry for ITT is in India. The British Military offers the Gurkhas a chance to get rich(avg salary for a Gurkha NCO is in the region of 2000pounds/month) without compromising with their military heritage!

There are no Indian Army combat troops in Afghanistan.

There are the ITBF and some Engineers seconded to GREF to build roads.

As far as the British Gorkhas are concerned here it is from the horses mouth:

Gurkhas Terms and Conditions of Service

If you wade through the 'Serious Bit' on ARRSE you will find the thread on the British Gorkhas and citizenship.

There is also a move afoot to pay a huge severance pension so that the clamour for British citizenship by the Gorkhas is not attractive an option.

Since in the WW-II British have raised the Gurkha Regiment. One is maintained by the IA later and British lately decided to raise a one and it came out in 1994.
Following India's independence, India, Nepal and Great Britain signed a Tripartite Agreement, and six regiments of the Gurkha Rifles joined the Indian Army. In 1950, when India became a republic, the Royal titles were dropped from the regiments that joined the Indian Army.

Following the divisions of the Gorkha regiments, the British Army decided that joining of the British Army would be entirely voluntary for the Gorkha soldiers and decided to hold a referendum. As a result, large numbers of men from the 7th Gurkha Rifles and the 10th Gurkha Rifles, which recruited predominantly from Eastern Nepal, decided not to join their regiments as part of the British Army. In order to retain a contingent from this area of Nepal, the Indian Army made the decision to re-raise the 11 Gorkha Rifles, which was disbanded after the 1922.

The British Gurkhas consists of:
2nd King Edward VII's Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles)
6th Gurkha Rifles
7th Gurkha Rifles
10th Gurkha Rifles
