There were four very successful aircraft, all having more or less the same design.

P-51 Mustang

Supermarine Spitfire

Messerschmitt Bf 109

Yakovlev-3

All of them were very maneuverable and capable fighters.

There was one deficiency in the P-51 Mustang. When on a dive, its engines would stall, while their German counterpart did not, and this is because the German counterpart has a fuel injected engine while P-51 had a carburetor.

Coming to the opening post, the modification seems to be adding jet engines to a propeller driven aircraft.

During the 1962 Indo-China War, one IAF Fairchild Packet were installed with a jet-pack so that it could takeoff from the rarefied airfield in Ladakh.

This was also done in India by HAL.

IAF Fairchild C-119G Flying Boxcar or "Packet" retro-fitted with a jetpack.

Note: The nickname "Packet" is specifically meant for Fairchild C-82. In India, Fairchild C-119 was called the "Packet," while in the west, it was called the "Flying Boxcar."
