5G spectrum auction extends to 3rd day; receives bids worth Rs 1.49 lakh cr on Day 2

Vodafone Idea Ltd has likely bid for Rs 18,400 crore for spectrum, while Adani Data Networks should have picked 26 GHz spectrum pan-India, it said.

India’s auction of the 5G spectrum, capable of offering lag-free connectivity and ultra-high speed internet, has garnered Rs 1.49 lakh crore worth of bids so far as the sale stretched to the third day.

Firms run by tycoons Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Bharti Mittal and Gautam Adani as well as Vodafone Idea had put in bids worth Rs 1.45 lakh crore on the opening day on Tuesday and incremental demand for airwaves came in five rounds held on Wednesday.

Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the second day of the auction has ended and it will continue on Thursday.

“I am happy to see good competition in auction, good competition for all bands have come in,” he said. “Bids worth Rs 1,49,454 crore have been received so far at the end of 9th round.” Analysts said Ambani’s Reliance Jio may be the most aggressive of those in the race.
The minister said all bands of the spectrum are seeing demand.

Though details of the bids are not announced as yet, ICICI Securities said its analysis shows that Jio has likely bid for the highest spectrum worth Rs 80,100 crore, and likely opted for 10MHz spectrum in the premium 700 MHz band.

Bharti Airtel may have bid for spectrum worth Rs 45,000 crore, spending 20 per cent more than expected, possibly in 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz bands.
Vodafone Idea Ltd has likely bid for Rs 18,400 crore for spectrum, while Adani Data Networks should have picked 26 GHz spectrum pan-India, it said.

“It appears Adani has bought 26GHz spectrum in 20 circles (except in Delhi and Kolkata), and its total spectrum purchase could be 3350MHz for Rs 900 crore. Our estimate is provisional as data does not reflect the entire purchase by Adani. We believe, it should have purchased 200 MHz spectrum in all circles except Gujarat, where it would have bought 400MHz,” ICICI Securities noted.

"Airtel paid ₹8,312.4 crore towards spectrum dues and was provided the allocation letter for the designated frequency bands within hours. E band allocation was given along with spectrum as promised. No Fuss, No Follow Up, No running around the corridors and No tall claims. This is ease of doing business at work in its full glory," Mittal said in a statement.
======
This is the first time ever that the Department of Telecom (DoT) has handed out a spectrum allocation letter on the day of making upfront payment.

The update will come only in December!

“5G on iPhone is not working yet because Apple has to open it. They are promising to open it soon. Apple is currently testing 5G in India; we have set up special networks for them to test" - Airtel CTO Randeep Sekhon.

OnePlus have given software update to enable 5G on their phones around 15 September.

Why are people so excited about 5G? Is it because high internet speeds let's one watch porn and HD movies without buffering?

They didn't come up with 5G standard so that people can conveniently indulge themselves streaming HD or 4K movies and other BS. 5G standard is mainly meant for industrial applications like industry 4.0, robotics, smart cities, augmented reality etc. 5G uses millimeter wave technology which means instead of radio waves, base stations will be using millimeter waves. Radio waves can carry less information but can travel longer distances. Millimeter waves on the other hand can carry more information but can travel very short distances. This means unlike previous Telecommunication standards, Telecom operators need to have base stations every square kilometer to truly provide 5G services which will cost them in billions.

It will take 15 years or more to install 5G base stations all over the country. That is why 4G isn't going to go away anytime soon. Both 4G and 5G will have to coexist. Since Telecom operators have to deploy thousands of base stations the electricity bill for them would be staggering. Even that chap Huawei CEO has said the same. People need to cool it with their excitement or about conspiracy theories of 5G causing cancer non sense. 5G isn't going to change your life any more than buying newly released iphone. As of now in order to make business sense Telecom operators all over the world are providing 5G services only in dense urban areas that too at very high prices.

5G revolutionize industry & business sector, like 4G done with civilian sector. At the end price decide every thing.

the excitement is because for the first time India is not so behind on the curve on some tech, early harvest from 5G to Indian economy will be in lakhs of crores within a few years, early harvest in terms of technology exploitation.

more importantly 5G has material engineering implications unlike the last tech boom in India which was primarily software oriented.

young folks who will get in this game will be on par wrt competency with rest of the world by the time 5G tech matures and gets adopted across the world.

it’s the second Y2K moment for India.

Wait karlo thora.

In the 5G test in Delhi recently by Airtel the average speed users were getting was only ~68-70 mbps.

I get ~80mbps easily with airtel on 4G itself in NCR.

Airtel has started 5G offering in NCR, esp in Delhi and Gurgaon. People posted the snapshot of the 5G speed they are getting.
Pretty much its a trial period!

not sure how it works, but i presume those 1gbps speeds will be limited to very specific locations.

1GBPS speed possible only with milimeter wave system which is being used in US only. For that also you need to be close to the tower with mmwave radio system and in Line of site to the system. The moment you turn around a corner and lose line of site then you will loose the 1gbps speed. Although you will still have speed over 100 mbps there. mmWave does not penetrate building.

Biggest thing : your phone should also come with mmwave radio. iPhones and other android 5G phones being sold in India does not have mmwave radio band in them in first place.

1gbps speed 5G system failed big time in China too and they are now focusing of offering such speeds in Industrial applications only now.
