Recent research according to Canalys; a leading global technology market analyst firm, shows Transsion Holdings, the parent company behind Africa’s biggest smartphone manufacturers trio TECNO, itel and Infinix tops the distribution of African Smartphone market share collectively with 38% ahead of Samsung with 23%.

Report by Canalys showing the top 5 smartphone vendors in Africa reveals Samsung is still number one and made an improvement from the previous year 2017. For the first quarter in 2017, Samsung shipped 2.4 million smartphone units to Africa, a figure which has risen to 3.4 million units in 2018 showing a 42% growth rate. When placed individually against others in the top 5, TECNO comes in second place with an 18% market share in Q1 2018. Following closely in third place is Transsion’s feature phone manufacturer, itel with an 18% market share. Chinese OEM Huawei and Infinix comes with 4th and 5th place respectively with both holding a 7% dominance in African Smartphone market share in Q1 this year.

TECNO and Infinix continues to dominate West African smartphone market and its presence is currently biggest in Nigeria. Samsung prides itself on producing premium devices such as its Galaxy series and has definitely made a progress in Africa as evidenced by this report.

Transsion held 48.7% of Africa’s mobile phone market and 34.3% of its smartphone market in 2018, as well as 6.7% of India’s mobile phone market in the same year, according to research firm IDC. Huawei meanwhile held 9.9% share of the smartphone market in Africa, according to IDC data.
