Gunmen open fire on bus in Karachi, kill 41

KARACHI: Gunmen on motorcycles killed 41 people in an attack on a bus in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi on Wednesday, police said, in what appeared to be the latest violence directed against religious minorities this year.

"There are 41 deaths, men and women included," police spokesman Atiq Shaikh told Reuters.

Television channels carried pictures of a pink bus covered in bullet holes and lines of waiting ambulances. Police said the passengers were from a religious minority.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Taliban splinter groups have bombed several mosques belonging to religious minorities this year.

Ismaili community attacked: police

Pakistan has seen a rising tide of sectarian violence in recent years, particularly against Shias — of which the Ismaili community is a sub-sect — who make up around 20 percent of the country's predominantly Muslim population.

“The dead and injured have been shifted to the private Memon Medical Center nearby,” an official of the Ismaili National Council, a group which represents the community said.

The bus belongs to the Al-Azhar Garden Colony, which is an Ismaili community housing project in Karachi. It was on its regular route headed towards Federal B Area of Karachi.
