BENGALURU: At a time when commanders of India's defence forces are delivering pep talks and preparing their personnel for prospective conflicts, 4 lakh employees working with 41 ordnance factories, naval docks, and other productions units that form the backbone of the armed forces' are readying themselves for a massive protest.

The multiple protests against the government's move to increase privatisation in defence production beginning from Wednesday are likely to disrupt work in parts but experts say it is unlikely to change the Centre's resolve, which they believe is the right way forward.

The has now finalised the 'strategic partnership' policy that will see increased private participation in defence manufacturing in the coming years.

On Wednesday, a one-hour "no work" protest is planned in all of the ordnance factories, 52 Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) labs, naval docks, ship-building units, a few Indian Air Force stations, and defence PSUS.

The protests come after multiple attempts by the trade unions to secure a meeting with Defence Minister Arun Jaitley failed and letters to more than 60 members of parliament (MPs) including several on the Defence Standing Committee did not garner any response.

"We have even written to Amit Shah and Sonia Gandhi. The Centre did not take us into confidence before taking such an important decision on privatisation. We are not just concerned about thousands of jobs that will be lost in the coming years, but also about the strategic issues," All India Defence Employees' Federation (AIDEF) General Secretary C Srikumar told TOI from Chennai.

Air Marshal (retd) BK Pandey, however, says: "Such a turmoil is expected. But one must understand that increased private participation is the way forward, but the government must not expect results too quickly. This should not become like an election slogan. These protests will eventually fizzle out as it is unlikely to change the Centre's resolve."

A brigadier, who did not want to be named, also said that the ordnance factories and other defence establishments have for long not been too efficient. "It is not that the government is shutting all of them immediately, even they have their chance to participate in these projects. It is up to them how they utilise their long-held expertise," he said.

The protests will be spread across the country and in July, and according to copies of internal communications between employees of various defence units with TOI, a massive month-long hunger strike outside the Parliament building is also planned in July.
"We have already sought permission from the Delhi police. If we don't get it, we will still go on a hunger strike, they can arrest us if that's the message the government wants to send," Srikumar said.

Has anyone of you visited these government owned factories? These employees are having a frikkin ball. All play and no work. And even what they make is far below standard. Zero quality control. What should take 1 day to produce, they take 10!! Jeez! They get paid massive overtime wages which is almost the same as their salaries without doing any 'overtime' work. Double salaries for doing zilch!

And so the strike as they are pissed off at the prospect of getting their asses whipped. No more on-the-job paid vacations! And no more 'overtime'!

Cheers!

Ya heard about depressing stories from my bro in law who worked HVF-CVRDE as junior works manager for 6 year s in T-72 and Arjun production line and he said how the workers below him literally used to threaten him if he ask them to put some quality work on office hours ..Plus this bloody commie thing of unions strikes and protest ..He finally had to quit HVF after 6 years realising that this countries defence manufacturing and his own future are not going to progress anywhere at all ...:frusty:

Famous line : One lunch Two punch that s how these govt organisations work ...

Stupid Commie Unions probably dancing to tune of Beijing masters. But they are digging their own graves. Crippling the country's defense posture at a time of critical need will only hasten the Govt's resolve and shift towards private sector. Aayi rey aayi...PSU ki baari aayi
