BANNU: At least 20 security personnel were martyred and 30 others injured in a car bomb blast targeting military convoy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Bannu town, SAMAA reported Sunday.
Officials said the blast took place in Bannu's cantonment area near Razmak Gate when soldiers and officers were gathering and their convoy comprising 25 to 30 vehicles was about to leave for Miranshah.
According to initial reports, 20 security troops, including army, Frontier Constabulary (FC) and paramilitary soldiers, were martyred whereas 30 others were injured. They were rushed to CMH Bannu and later Peshawar.
Massive rescue and relief operations were underway following the blast. Sources say the death toll may raise as the blast was so powerful that it was heard in far off localities.
Confirming nature of the blast, sources said an explosive-laden vehicle blew up near the convoy. It was a civilian vehicle hired by the army personnel for transportation of the army men to North Waziristan's Miranshah town where a military operation is underway and curfew has been imposed.
Officials said army's convoy is dispatched to Miranshah every week to take part in the offensive, adding that civilian vehicles are hired for transportation purpose.
The cantonment area was completely cordoned off as media and civilian persons were not allowed in. Troops were being mobilized for a search operation in the area.
