Egyptian security forces on Wednesday uncovered a large cache of missiles and mortar shells in northern Sinai which are believed to have been bound for the Gaza Strip, Egyptian newspaper al-Youm al-Sabe' reported Thursday.

A security source told the paper that the cache was seized near the city of Nahal, located on the smuggling route to Gaza, and that it contained some 100 antiaircraft missiles, 45 rocket-propelled grenades, and 40 explosive devices.

According to the report, the officer in charge of security in northern Sinai received information that the smugglers were storing a large amount of explosives and ammunition left from past wars in the region, east of Nahal.

After receiving the information, Egypt's security forces entered the area and located the weapons cache, but did not apprehend any suspects. The entire area was combed and the explosives were to be detonated in a controlled manner in central Sinai.

The newspaper also reported that Egypt's security forces on Wednesday uncovered three tunnels connecting the Egyptian city of Rafah and the Gaza Strip.

An official security source said Wednesday that the Egyptian police had confiscated in Sinai 41 vehicles used for smuggling operation into the Gaza Strip. The source said the police found one of the vehicles, without a license plate, during a routine patrol north of the Rafah crossing. The 40 additional vehicles were found after the police searched the area.
