The Greatest Kings in Indian History

From what I could dig up, Ashoka's first campaign was crushing a rebellion in Avanti. Precisely my point. It depends upon which historian you read. There is no dispute that between Pataliputra and whatever was Tamil Nadu then, there lies Kalinga. This geographical fact is undisputed.

I have a different take on this. Ashoka renounced violence because of the casualty of Mauryan Army, not because of the sheer brutality in the field. I say this because, Kalinga war wasn't Ashoka's first war, and war is always brutal. I also don't think the same would have happened with the...

I am not advocating renouncing violence. I believe in violence, but only as a matter of retaliation or self-defense. I am against initiating violence. Regarding the rest of your comment, it is more like, what we should do going into the future. This thread is about the greatest kings in India's...

The Greatest Kings in Indian History

Historically, most of the invasions have happened from the North. So, the northern states will get pummeled if there is an invasion. Now, from that angle, Tamil Nadu or Maharashtra might look relatively safe. Said that, once Uncle Sam decides to park a couple of aircraft carriers and associated...

The Greatest Kings in Indian History

Ok, and what if UK held plebiscite in different parts of India? The subcontinent would have been a fragmented jumble of nations, and would have been defeated one by one, like various Indian kings have been defeated by invaders over our long history. India has to remain united if it has to...

The Greatest Kings in Indian History

It depends upon which historian you read. While it is true that the Mauryan Army defeated the Kalinga Army, it was no easy victory. Rather, it was a Pyrrhic victory. The Kalinga warriors fought bravely, and did not yield one inch without a fight. The Mauryan Army was so badly mauled, that...

The Greatest Kings in Indian History

Very intelligent post. Good one! :thumb: Kshetra in Sanskrit means territory. Anyone in charge of protecting or governing that territory is a Kshatriya in Sanskrit, Chatrapati in Prakrit or a regional derivative thereof, and Satrapi in Hellenic Greek!

The Greatest Kings in Indian History

This is a very old thread and Chandragupta is still winning! I am sure most great kings were equally brave, but Chandragupta defeating the mighty Greeks adds a lot of extra shine and sheen to him! Chandragupta Maurya, FTW!

^^ Thank you Sir! Now that will silence some of the detractors of Chanakya who have been carrying out a smear campaign against him.

Praise Ambedkar and Periyar for all their work in removing casteist discrimination. Also praise those form 'upper' castes who have attempted the same thing long before Periyar and Ambedkar. One who appreciates good work by a person, regardless of his caste, is indeed neutral. When one fails to...

Pankaj, I like your post. Very thoughtful. If you see my earlier posts in caste related threads, I am one of the most vocal supporters of reservation and affirmative action and have always spoken out again Brahminical domination of Hindu society. Yet, it is also important to keep things...

He is best left alone bud! His head is full of anger and heart full of hatred against anything that is 'upper' caste and that is evident in his posts. He wants to take out his anger again posters here at DFI for whatever his people suffered in the past. I wonder if anyone he is yelling his guts...

He meant nothing if you take out 4 words out of a complete sentence and out of context. No he was not. He was born into a family of peacock tamers which is obvious from his surname. Also, Kshatriya is not a caste. Try not to argue about things you don't understand. You failed to quote. End of...

The Greatest Kings in Indian History

I have always maintained that the term Kshatriya is a varna and not a caste. This has been well discussed in the relevant thread. I don't need to wait for anyone's sweet response. Sweet as it may be, one needs to understand the etymological root of the term Kshatriya before even attempting to...

The Greatest Kings in Indian History

Excellent post. Good rebuttal to an otherwise attempted rhetoric, which, in reality, does not in any way prove that Chandragupta had Kshatriya lineage. As I have already mentioned, many translators write books and try to embed their own interpretations therein, which readers tend to absorb as...
