Actually, we are yet to issue the P-75I RFP.

It wouldn't. And anyway, new gen technology is always a good thing, whether proven or not. The point is to stay ahead, not follow.

I don't deny about buying the most advanced, but you were talking about proven. Only the German and Swedish AIPs are proven, the rest are still developing new AIPs. Regardless of how crappy MESMA is, it is proven since the Pakistanis seem to have been operating them for quite sometime now...

It wasn't a direct confirmation, but we are their biggest tank consumers. We didn't need the Obj 195 for other reasons as well, apart from the fact that we plan to develop our own 4th gen tank. The Russians couldn't afford the Obj 195 so they moved to the less capable Armata, which could be a...

Huh? What are you talking about? And Smerch was too small a deal for ToT. That "junk" is our best ship right now. We can't go govt to govt or the navy would have done that years ago. Please read DPP2006 to 2013. And Japan has to reply, we sent out a global RFP to everybody. As...

    Project-75I class SSK Submarines

It was canceled because it was determined that the army couldn't afford it. At 55 tons it was too heavy, even though it had twice the armor mass as a 3rd gen tank and a 155 mm gun. However Damian posted a link which said that the Russians were willing to export it to just one country, the...

That the submarines are untested doesn't really hold much water.

    Project-75I class SSK Submarines

So what? It takes time to get proper clearances from three govts. This has nothing to do with the fact that they transfer technology wherever necessary. Both sides are to blame for the Gorky deal, not just the Russians. And we got a ship we couldn't have from any other place at such a low...

Amur is a modified Kilo class. S-80 is a modified Scorpene class.

What you said is nowhere near true. While it is true that Soviet quality wasn't as good as Western quality, but the fact is for the majority of the cold war the Soviets had some major advantages over the West in many areas. The Soviets dominated for over 20 years with the T-64. It was the...

    Project-75I class SSK Submarines

The western nations have always fought poorly trained and equipped forces wielding previous generation weapons. During such wars, it wasn't that the Soviet weapons lost, it was just that the countries that lost were equipped with Soviet weapons. It wouldn't have been any different if Iraq had...

    Project-75I class SSK Submarines

The two sub buy is an emergency buy, see point one that I made earlier. Amur is a modified Kilo class. We faced a major loss and the navy wants a replacement. Amur is the only logical choice because we already have trained crews and infrastructure. We buy Russian because we are far closer to...

    Project-75I class SSK Submarines

Direct purchase is allowed only in two cases. One, where the product is unique. Two, when there is an emergency. In cases where there are many products available, a tender is launched. This is done in order to get the best price for capability or else in direct purchases they add whatever...

The Japanese will likely not reply to the RFP. So, no point in bothering with them when they don't think they should sell us subs. S-1000 is a very small sub. Better options are the larger version of Amur, the new Scorpene or the S-80, which is basically the Spanish Scorpene.

Japan was a much more capable economy than us during the time compared to where we are today. However we have plans of making our own indigenous sub with a possible 12 to be built. Goes without saying. It is part of the forum disclaimer.

It will take us decades to get our own design working. The same with Arihant. It is good to fill the void with imports at least until 2030-40 period. Anything less and we will be behind.

Why? SSKs when running on electricity are quieter than a nuclear sub that is running on turbines. Even coolant pumps add to the SSNs noise. Add AIP and the SSK can potentially hunt and kill any SSN lurking about before it's underwater time runs out.

    Project-75I class SSK Submarines

It is not a flaw, it is mere physics. Coolant pumps will make noise. Even minuscule noise is noise. Other than that SSNs are two to three times bigger than SSKs. So, it is obvious the acoustic signatures of a SSK is lower than a SSN. If there is something that can shut out noise from coolant...

    Project-75I class SSK Submarines

Nuclear submarines are nosier than diesel electric subs because of coolant pumps used to stabilize the reactor in nuclear submarines. However nuclear submarines are much larger and heavier, faster, go deeper, carry more personnel, more weapons and electronics and have near unlimited...
