    Project-17A Nilgiri-class Frigate Thread

There's no reference to ddg or dg in IN documentation. We call them as 'guided missile destroyer/frigate' only. Even stealth is a word the IN abstains from. Reduced signature is preferred

Exactly, the Nilgiris, Kolkatas and Vizags have a tonne of space left - all to take in future upgrades that the IN is anticipating. USV/UAV bays, new missiles, new Defensive systems. It makes sense not to go for everything right now and then 5 years hence have new tech you want to integrate but...

@jai jaganath study fleet defense and intercept kill chain before making grandiose claims about uselessness of P17As. They are perfectly adequate for their intended role in the IN, and will never be operating alone in a combat group. All youre doing is revealing your ignorance here

    Project-17A Nilgiri-class Frigate Thread

They were begging us to become a partner. The First Sea Lord visited IN HQ 3 times to convince the IN. IN even took a good look at it, and laughed all the way to signing the P17A

This program is hilariously bad. The first type 26 frigate began construction at the same time as the Nilgiris, and while Nilgiri will be commissioned next year, the first Type 26 wont get commissioned until 2025-26 at roughly 2 times the price without any of the bells and whistles of the Nilgiris

It will be 127mm BAE guns, rest assured. Some 12 have been ordered, to be spread between the P17A, the P15B and INS Dronacharya (Gunnery school)

Which ships are you talking of? These are the first ships ordered since the second set of Talwars were delivered in 2012. That is 7 years ago. No ship/sub has been ordered from Russia since then.

Numbers, mate. All shipyards have full order books, but IN needs large number of decent PSCs to fullfil it's mandate. The 4 Talwars were an unmissable opportunity.

And its that easy to maintain the electrical components and the cell's integrity, is it?

    Project-17A Nilgiri-class Frigate Thread

Simple - ships serve for decades - why choke up empty spaces that might in the future be home to advanced weaponry on the verge of delivery (better missiles, DEWs) or perhaps logistical systems that actually reload missile cells at sea?

    Project-17A Nilgiri-class Frigate Thread

Right now, no. Our ships can't reload VLS cells at sea. But with the new next gen Universal VLS, itll become possible. There are plans for new Replenishment ships for the same reason.

Monster is right. There was no ship like the R class in the entire IOR. It was modern and state of the art in every sense.

It's not that the ships lack fuel capacity or some such. The Gas Turbines are great acceleration and speed wise but lack mileage. So it's a different use case. Frigates need to accelerate fast, separate from the task force and hunt down a submarine or respond to a SOS, for example while the...

    Project-17A Nilgiri-class Frigate Thread

It's a misnomer. The French do not have any destroyers. All their ships are called frigates. The Japanese do not have any frigates. All their ships are Destroyers... And yes, the P17 and 17A ships are FAR more capable than R class but they lack the command facilities that P15 and 15A have, and...

No clue. But FFGs dont even need 127mm guns. Maybe, the three 127mm guns will be put on some other ships the Delhi maybe? Or the maybe the LHDs to be built since they are in essence landing ships and need to have naval gunfire support weapons.

    Project-17A Nilgiri-class Frigate Thread

The last agreement was for 10 127mm guns to be built by BHEL Haridwar - so 4 15B destroyers + 3 to be retrofitted to the Kolkatas + 3 of the last P17A
