    Is the tank becoming obsolete?

I don't agree. The Americans have no qualms on retiring weapons platform that have no relevance to them anymore. There are several weapons that they retired early because they didn't see the practicality of maintaining them (Convair bomber, F14). Now they have tried several replacements to the...

    Is the tank becoming obsolete?

@Damian is right. The fact that all major militaries are maintaining, developing and modernising their tanks shows that they see it as a relevant weapons system well into the future. And there is no escaping this fact. In all kinds of wars for a combatant to win they have to occupy the...

    Is the tank becoming obsolete?

@Bhadra Well, MBTs will not be relevant in all battles. But as the recent (apparently unending) wars of the US have shown, even in battle fields like Afghanistan that has no enemy MBTs, Leos and M1s have proven to be valuable assets.

    Is the tank becoming obsolete?

Battles are not fought using single platform/assets. The US MArines war in Fallujah is what they called combined ops using a lot of assets to fight in an urban conflict (the hardest area to fight in for tanks). Is the tank becoming obsolete?

That's not the fault of the tank but the defective tactic of the Syrian Army. Clearly, the Syrian military, which is trained according to Soviet conventional war doctrine, was ill-prepared for urban warfare. You don't have to be the US to employ properly tanks in urban warfare. The most...

    Is the tank becoming obsolete?

The significance of the US Marines experience in Fallujah is that MBT will continue to be relevant and a valuable weapon in urban warfare (which is more and more the kind of battle militaries now fight). It may be true that the tank was called upon in Fallujah because it was already in the...

    Is the tank becoming obsolete?

You can read this material - https://sa.rochester.edu/jur/issues/fall2007/chang.pdf An interesting quote from the article on how the US Marines used combined arms in the Battle of Fallujah:

    Is the tank becoming obsolete?

Battlefields are theaters of improvisation, tactical dexterity. Of the heavy weapons known to soldiers nothing can compare to the flexibility offered by MBTs. It can operate in direct and indirect fire modes. Continued improvements on MBT armors mean that it is increasingly safe even in urban...

    Is the tank becoming obsolete?

In a way tanks are like aircraft carriers in today's situation, they're big and lumbering targets that can easily be defeated by new anti-aircraft carrier weapons, and they're expensive to maintain. But you might ask, with the growing sophistication of cheaper anti-ship weapons why is it that...
